I've tried to watch Ergo Proxy two times, back in 2006 and then a second time a couple of years ago. I can't think of a more midwit sci-fi anime than this one. When you see people praise it, ask them what the story was about, and then ask them what their favorite scene was. That's why the anime was originally cancelled in the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster, suddenly the sci-fi scenario hit a bit too close to home. Anyway, the premise is that the Japanese gov't is sending genetically engineered highschool girls who are (among other things) immune to radiation into Tokyo, ostensibly to rescue people. In reality the whole Coppelion mission is more of a test run for a line of potential super soldiers. Despite how all of this may sound, the story isn't at all gritty as you might expect, though, and more of an action adventure throwing around mutant super powers, gunplay, spider tanks and whatnot. It does try have its serious moments, but it's by no means an anime rendition of STALKER, which disappointed most anons and most viewers in general back in the day. The series just taps into the aesthetic. So if you're in search of heart wrenching post-apocalyptic survival drama, I'm afraid I can't recommend it. If you like the idea of cute girls duking it out in a ruined city, however, then you should have fun.

That being said there absolutely is a main plot, but it's intentionally delivered in scattered parts, you're only ever given just enough so that you can understand the next layer. It's certainly a think tank anime (What does this mean? What does that stand for? What is this trying to show me? ect). It explores identity, loss of innocence, the effects on humanity of creating another conscious layer above our physical reality that dictates what we perceive as truth, among other things. Understandably that is not for everyone, so if you don't care for psychological stuff in general Lain is the great filter, as it almost wholly leans into that field. It's dense with an eerie atmosphere and solemn visuals. At first it seems to be an entirely different show than what it is, and eventually those scattered plot elements will start to convene and accelerate, hurdling the viewer towards a cliff as the plot reaches the point of no return. Once you have a grasp on everything the show was trying to tell you, it's almost even more interesting on rewatches as you can fully understand all the bits and pieces that were right in front of you the whole time. It's definitely a one of a kind show that I can admit is not for everyone, as if you watch anime for a very straightforward A to B plot with powerups and battles, or a shallow slice of life all about cute girls doing cute things, you will find none of that here. Also Lain is cute.

I only checked it out originally because I liked the opening and because cute witches are cute, then somehow I got hooked by what I found to be a very relaxing atmosphere. I'm not sure why a lot of similar shows just bore me to tears and then there's the occasional odd one out like Flying Witch where I suddenly don't mind that nothing happens. So I can't take offense that other people hate it although personally I enjoyed it a lot.

I think what makes me like Lain and wanna rewatch it is because it explores lots of concepts in 1999 about technology, psychology, and the internet drastically before what we see today. I think thats why I'm drawn to lots of retro futuristicand scfi animes guessing what the future will be like. I'm going to rewatch Lain with these ideas in mind next time though.
