I don’t understand. This is the anime everyone was splooging all over themselves for the longest time? I seriously cannot comprehend how this anime got past the first season, much less any subsequent seasons. My mouth is agape at just how awful this anime is. I decided to give it a try out of sheer boredom just to see what all of the hype is about. Where do I even begin? Let me start with the premise

It has potential, but is utterly squandered by…almost everything else present in this show. A guy gets stuck in an MMO far in the future that would make Ready Player One look like the SNES era. But it’s so undercooked. It’s barely there. Apart from the occasional inner monologues and quirky antics with his two crazy NPC yandere I found myself almost forgetting that this entire world was still a mere MMO that went haywire for one player. It’s like the creator or writers of this wanted to make an isekai but to distance themselves from it as far as humanly possible at the exact same time. For reasons that utterly escape me, it’s as if the fact that Ainz is actually a player stuck in MMO is just window dressing to have an excuse to show some almighty lich tear apart NPCs with his own God complex. Kind of like Tron Legacy, only edgy and super dark for the sake of it. And if the protagonist didn’t bother ever leaving the computer space and just killed off a bunch of the programs for his own bloodlust.

He wants to show a world filled with bloody violence, actual consequences, dark, grim ends for developed characters(to an extent) a la Game of Thrones without the actual impact of all of this occurring in the “real, living”” world. Granted, this is my main criticism of the isekai genre as a whole (at least pertaining to isekai that features protags getting transported into a virtual world.) However, this could be forgiven if the isekai was executed properly, as seen with other anime such as Mushoku Tensei or Skeleton Knight. Whereas the aforementioned examples try to breathe life in both the characters and the world in a manner that is conducive to the genre, Overlord ostensibly attempts to…ignore everything about its own genre for the sake of...honestly, I have no fucking clue what kind of story this show wants to tell. 2. Mushoku Tensei and Skeleton Knight both accomplish what Overlord never seemed too intent on addressing–character development and motivation. For the former, it’s about some NEET who dies after a lifetime of humiliation and bullying, but gets a second chance at life in what is arguably one of the richest, most compelling isekai I have ever seen. But that’s just my opinion. As for the latter, it’s much the same as Overlord, With the key difference is that this protagonist seems to have a concrete goal in mind that is continually expanded upon in a narrative that is filled with levity and some darker themes as well.

I cannot say the same for Overlord, with its sparse, throwaway lines of his mentioning what is essentially a passing whim to maybe…perhaps…get in touch with other players at some point. The pacing—indeed, the episodes themselves are not really played out in a way that would give the audience a sense of an overarching goal or even a temporary motivation out of this half-baked, overgrown undead who just happens to have great fashion sense.

3. Tone. This show’s entire tone is about as consistent as freshly spewn-out vomit. Does the show want to be dark and gritty? Does it want to be more light-hearted with amusing tropes involving horny harem girls along with the dense, plucky guy being unable to keep his nose from bleeding like it was Niagara Falls? Overlord was apparently written by people with massive ADD, because the tone, the writing, the sub plots are all over the place. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like Ainz is the protagonist here. Then again, I guess the creator loves spending an entire episode or two developing freshly introduced characters only to kill them off in a show that appears more concerned with masturbating itself over the power level of Ainz. Again, this really culminated during Season 3. What have I been watching for the past two and a half seasons? Was there a point to any of this? Because with the way the episodes are laid out it almost feels more like Cowboy Bebop than a show with an overarching narrative. And that’s a bad thing in this case. The protagonist is inconsistently written, the tone is inconsistent, the character focus is more scattered than buckshot, (seriously, who am I supposed to care about in this show?) and I am starting to suspect that this anime has no idea what it wants to do with its own characters, much like Bleach.

Which is, the MC loved his game, and was bored and lonely without his fellow guildies to play with. Now that his npc allies are 'sentient', its still not the same, and he misses those people. I can provide three pieces of insight.
First, the base material the story was made out of, was the creator's unused D&D binder. The inconsistent tone to worldbuilding can pretty much entirely be attributed to this. The material the story was made out of wasn't ever really intended to be woven together into a single narrative, the creator was just a DM with really bad player luck, so had a novel's worth of hooks, prompts, and scenarios. So he used it. It wasn't even chronological when first released for this very reason.
Second, the primary theme of Overlord is people filling roles, and the social pressure to conform to those roles.
The emotion suppressor Ainz has, beyond its fantasy and character implications, is the mallet that stops Ainz from expressing individuality outside of the role he has been forced into. Many, many characters are forced into strange roles by the story, and the absurdist interplay between people playing roles they niether want not understand is the pulp of the narrative. Overlord is, more than an isekai, more than a fantasy, an anime about corporate life and office politics, and the people following their job description even when it makes no sense.
Third, Ainz is not supposed to be seen as anything other than pathetic. Ainz is someone who cannot let go of a past that will never return, and is bitter that nobody appreciates his stewardship of things nobody wants. Even in a new world, Ainz cannot do things he wants, he is still locked in a holding pattern, just in case one of his old friends wants to come play again. He has been given true, godlike freedom, and all he has done with it is shackle himself to his old holding patterns, awaiting the approval of the memory of people who will never return. Nobody will miss Ainz in his home. He is incapable of moving on or enjoying life. He's undead, and lives in a tomb, literally and metaphorically. He's dead inside as out, he no longer seeks joy, merely the memory of past joys.

Your expectations, what you want the show to be, just don't match what the show is trying to be. You're better off watching something like Log Horizon or Mynoghra. Overlord is a power fantasy anime (like most isekai) about a nigh-omnipotent being conquering a fantasy world. In that sense it's closer to something like Gate than something like .hack//Sign.

Log Horizon is about the playerbase of an MMO being transported into the world of that MMO, and then proceeding to analyze how MMO mechanics work in reality (how does respawning work? How do NPCs see players? Etc).

In Mynoghra the protagonist is a turn-based 4X player, but it does focus on the 'how does this game work in reality' aspect and likewise features a normal guy suddenly becoming an evil overlord.

That's the character development you declared nonexistent. You gradually see the protagonist's morality decay as the actions required in his role does not match his moral compass, so as he performs more of them he gradually becomes colder and more uncaring. If there's a friend/ally/love interest, a part of the story will exist just to establish why the character is a wonderful person. Without following the characters for a bit and learning what drives them, their deaths would have no impact.

Are you new to anime? In Japanese fiction (including video games) it's common to intersperse a darker story with light-hearted moments to make the darker aspects hit harder. Without the fun times you wouldn't have such an attachment to the character and you would be better mentally prepared for his or her death. You need to have the audience let their guard down to be able to sucker punch them.

The two things that could happen, are N'feria and Climb.
Climb has Razor's Edge. It's properties aren't totally known, besides that it can damage anything, far above what it should be able to.
N'feria can use any magic item, even those with extremely stringent requirement.

The weak spot is the Guild Staff. Guild weapons immediately dissolve the Guild if destroyed, and grant Guild admin privileges when used.
Climb has a way to destroy the guild, N'feria has a way to usurp it.
Combined with Albedo going off the rails, and the possibility that Ainz might have a snap-to realization that maybe he's the asshole now, there's a couple ways things can go at this point.

There's also the issue of Clementine. Clementine's body was never properly disposed of, and she knows Ainz is Momon. Hypothetically, this information could escape, but at this point I don't think that would actually matter. The deception was necessary for gaining the people's trust, but most people under Ainz' rule are in fact genuinely happier once they get used to it.
There's also the possible issue of Renner. She can grant herself five levels in whatever class at will, so conceivably, she could grab Eclipse, the The Goal of all Life is Death, then kill anything. Probably only once, maybe twice though.

Every game I've played is like that, though I haven't played games as grindy or time consuming as Yggdrasil sounded (spending months preparing for world bosses etc.). They weren't cutting off contact exactly, I think it said 3 or 4 of them actually logged in to say goodbye (but didn't stay on obviously), and everyone had effectively quit before the servers shut down, which is why Momonga had all of their gear loaded into the statues in the treasury. I don't think Momonga played anything except Yggdrasil, and the rest of his guildmates had families to raise. He was able to keep in contact with them, but Yggdrasil was not something they bothered with at that point. It may have even been like an old console that they'd have to dig out of storage just to use.

Overlord actually does punch abnormally high for an anime in terms of big picture writing. It actually does have some masterwork depictions of human psychology and condition, the subtle erasure of Ainz' humanity is amazing, the structuring of the anime and shit, all great.

It's a perfectly fine adaptation. It keeps in line with the LN for 99% of shit. It's just some of the small, inconsequential plots that aren't present (like the talking Jewel of Death that is not going to serve any purpose), or internal thoughts from Ainz that make everything 10x funnier. The latest movie you have the paper crinkling in Ainz' hand, which you can barely hear, and you might not even notice that he was using it specifically as rehearsed speeches throughout the movie unless you read the LN previously.

The anime is fun, and I think it DOES enhance the overall experience as a supplement for the narrative worldbuilding, but there is a lot of important nuance, details, and other small bits that don't seem like much on their own, but provide vital context for the big picture writing. But, there is no question it's a more shallow experience that misses a lot of what's truly important, compared to the novels. I can't comment on where the original webcomic fits into this, I've never read it to chew on and compare.

I think this is just a limitation of Yggdrasil.
Demiurge's notes kinda point in this direction.
Demiurge is "supposed" do do a three forms sort of final boss transformation, but this ability doesn't actually exist, so he summons the demon lords (which are weaker than him) and turns invisible, then hides instead. He has the partial transformations that help complete the illusion, but at a baseline, a ton of Demiurge's build is just creative solutions around the fact that he can't actually transform.
Transformation as a whole seems to be something you just can't really do in Yggdrasil. Changelings have this as their entire feature, and allegedly Sebas can do it, but the fact that Demiurge was built around such a limitation in such a strange way suggests that just casting polymorph on yourself or whatever isn't really an option. Otherwise, Demiurge would be doing that, not the weird, barely functional, anti-synergy build he has, that makes him the weakest level 100 in Nazerick, and within the strike zone of a couple of the Pleides, who cap out at level 70 iirc, and I think that's only Yuri Alpha, the rest are 60 or lower. You wouldn't do that if you could just build a wizard that polymorphs himself.

His first action upon entering the new world, after taking stock of the situation, was saving a random village from getting completely destroyed, for no real reason.
He then went out of his way, and put himself at theoretical risk, to save Gazef.
Then, to needing a strong argument from Cocytus to not genocide the Lizardmen for no real reason.
Then, to baiting a bunch of people into the tomb, then killing them for taking the bait, and being angry the people baited into coming actually came.
Then, to actually just murdering a few hundred thousand people for no real reason.
Then, to destroying a kingdom, gaslighting the survivors, and systematically executing their leadership, for the purposes of an ad campaign for shitty weapons nobody really wants.

His moral standing has degraded over time, his values have shifted to be more and more self centered and petty, and his conception of the value of life has shifted to being more cold and utilitarian.
The line between the larp and the human beneath has become thinner and thinner, his attention is getting more and more narrow. He's actively losing his ability to act truly independently, or do things because he wants to, and is having a harder time not just filling the role he's been assigned.
The excuses he used to give Demiurge for why he was doing a particular thing of no apparent or immediate value to himself or nazarick, have become his actual reasons for doing things. He no longer really takes his own independent time like he used to, Pandora's Actor is basically the only one actually acting as Momon now. Ainz goes out as himself, now. The man underneath the bones is slowly eroding and being suppressed.
The Ainz at the start of the series would have been horrified if he had learned of the Happy Farm. The one now would understand it.

Demiurge was conceived of from the ground up, as an RP character. Every aspect of his build, and every piece of his backstory and profile, were written with an idea in mind. Demiurge is mechanically a clusterfuck, but is thematically the most consistent and cohesive character in the Tomb.
Shalltear is the opposite. Her build is mechanically minmaxed to perfection. She is super optimized as an NPC combatant, capable of 1v1ing pretty much any actual player build. But, her build is thematically incoherent and nonsensical. The disparate elements that make up her build make no logical sense together, have no unifying identity, and this is compounded by her backstory being Peroroncino copying and pasting his favorite porn tags. She's almost completely incompetent as anything other than a combat beatstick and teleport jockey, and even then, her abilities don't actually synergize quite as well as they should, because of how impossible the build is. And she's extra useless, because there's nothing in the setting strong enough to justify her use as a beatstick, when even the Pleides can pretty much solo anything short of the PDL.

Besides the obvious consequences, like the obsession with Ainz, not being able to ride the Bicorn, ect, there's another, deeper issue here. Tabula was... a weird guy, and wrote very intricate, convoluted, and contradictory backstories. That last line wasn't just a throwaway gag, it was the keystone of a jenga tower, that Ainz yanked out for a laugh.
Changing that line completely destabilized the balance of her character, which has lead to her having conflicting priorities, which has lead to her going rogue, because she has to find creative solutions to these dilemmas.

Star Wars as a series is mostly slop, but, the idea of how droids work, and their failsafe is good, and applies here. Droids have programming installed with laws and prerogatives that keep the droid mentally shackled to its orders. When a droid is faced with a problem that its programming is "stuck" by, it is briefly unshackled to solve the problem in a way that requires more creativity than a droid is usually allowed, before the shackling resumes, and the more such conflicts of programming a droid encounters, the more actual agency it gets, until it finally gets free of its programming forever. This is where Albedo is. Her backstory no longer makes sense, and Ainz' further decision to begin operating and acting under the alias Ainz, instead of Momonga, has added more fuel to the fire. Which has lead to her entire fucking black ops campaign to hunt down and kill any other guild players that may have also arrived, among other things.

Exactly this.
He's SUPPOSED to be able to turn into a big, fiery, final boss like demon, think a Balrog or a Bloodthirster or something. The big demon from the Holy Kingdom arc, that clubs people with Calca, is "supposed" to be the kind of thing he can turn into. But, he can't.
The best he can do is the Aspect of the Devil partial transformations, meaning frog head, the claws, the long tail, ect, and these can only be done one at a time. They're not very good abilities that are more in the vein of giving spellcasters shitty access to some abilities of other classes, maybe niche utility here or there, but Demiurge uses them for mostly cosmetic reasons.
And then, the actual big transformation that he can't do, he just summons the scary looking demon, turns invisible, hides, and pretends that's him.
Which, again, he actually does in the Holy Kingdom arc.

I see it more as him being passive. It would be one thing if he naturally gravitated toward Machiavellian tactics in an extremely uncertain world (and I think some of the things you mention actually do have a certain cold logic to them, like destroying that kingdom may end up saving human lives in the long run since he shows every other kingdom that he is now de facto ruler of the world without invading any of them), and where he has people and things he wants to protect, but more often than not he just bends to the machinations of his guardians (who aren't following any human reasoning at all but wouldn't mind genociding literally every living being in the world just for the lulz if they thought it pleased Ainz).

Yes.
She has a bunch of divine caster and paladin classes that logically she shouldn't have the ability to use or progress in, because she can't actually use the abilities to progress, and has a bunch of features that don't work, because she's an undead, but the net result is her having absurd survivability and sustain, the extra life, and all the other weird shit she has that makes her a menace. Also her clownsuit, which is just what peak, optimized stats with no appreciation for appearance looks like. I believe a historical example of this is "Outland Clown Syndrome", a phenomenon where whenever a new WoW expansion drops, everyone's previous, thematically consistent build gets replaced with random quest rewards and drops, and everyone looks like shit for a few weeks until people start getting thematically consistent armor sets near the ceiling of that expansion again. Or, maybe, Dark Souls, the person who wears whatever looks cool, vs the person who minmaxes as much protection as they can while staying under the dreaded fat roll. Shalltear's build doesn't really make consistent sense, so is cobbled together piecemeal in pursuit of specific traits, stat benchmarks, and features that make the build work.
None of the progression or logic issues her build has matter, because she was made as a level 100 NPC in a game, and could thus afford to do things like take levels in literally useless or actively harmful prerequisites, that would leave her as a non-functional character at lower levels, because she's already level 100 and skips over that part.
Peroroncino himself was absolutely a shitlord as well, for context, his build was flying, movement speed, and as much range as possible to cheese you from a zone away, and never ever ever actually see combat.

I do agree with this.
I think it's too subtle about what's actually happening.
It's not just emotion suppressing, but every time it happens, the man beneath looses a bit of ground and a bit of independence, to the role he's supposed to be playing. This is pretty observable at a few points, where immediately after the suppressor, he makes a call in line with what expectations others have of him, but if you aren't specifically looking for it, these can slide by. This is also, I think, a part where the anime makes for excellent supplemental material, because a few of the times it happens in the novel are very understated, just being breaks in train of thought, while they're obviously animated in the show.
It doesn't just suppress emotion, it suppresses humanity, individuality, and independence. It makes him act more like Momonga, guild master of Ainz Ooal Gown, instead of a human.
And the intentional parallel between this, and the slow conditioning of corporate culture also needs to be made a bit more explicit.
I can blame some of this on just being a Japanese work, I suspect this is leaning on more conventionally understood social mechanisms within Japanese culture, and especially Japanese corporate culture, that aren't as obvious to anyone outside of that.
The fukkin. That expression. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down", something like that. The emotion suppressor is ALSO that social mechanism, just inside Ainz' head, and makes him conform to the role he holds instead of acting as he wishes.
It's not entirely that, part of it is also the fact that Ainz is supposed to be unaware that it's happening, and it would be kind of awkward to have anyone else explain something going on within his psyche, so I can also understand why it isn't made more explicit. I think it would be worth some contrivance or clumsy narration to explain it better, but, I can understand it.

I know he's somewhat aware of it as an effect, even if not the details on it actually doing more to him than just making his emotions dampen. He knows about the emotion aspect, and really should be experimenting with it, which would lead to us being made more clearly aware of inconsistencies between his before and after thought processes. It could be that the lack of interest in it, is an enforced effect of it, but that's just conjecture and an excuse at that point, not an actual answer.

A bigger deal needs to be made about it than is, because it's one of the most singularly important things in the show and its themes. And that a lot of people whip right past it is definitely a failure of the writing. Whatever difference in background cultural awareness of the mechanism there may be, it needed more attention on it than it has, you really shouldn't be this subtle with something this crucial to the narrative. Needing to find the secret lever to be able to understand the writing isn't a good way to write, but it DOES make sense that someone coming from a background of tabletop would make the mistake, where there's a bit more expectation of being able to interact with and guide the suspicions of your audience.

I'd prefer none, but, I don't think Overlord is TOO egregious about it. Most of it is restricted to scenes where I can kind of understand the choice between this, or something pretty unimpressive to be actually animated, and weird gribblies and monsters whose designs are pretty complex to really portray well from all angles as a 2d animation.
The black goats are probably the only time I was really annoyed by it, they could have actually done something really cool artistically for those, instead of cg models.

Just because he was using his time-limited skill to summon Wrath and use that for Jaldabaoth doesn't mean that he can't take other forms. Same with Sebas, he's clearly going to be able to turn into his alternate dragon form, unless the author just forgot about it and ignore it in the last 2 volumes.

He's always a bumbling retard. The kingdom thing was Demiurge's idea and he went along with it because he wasn't smart enough to come up with an alternative. The tomb raider worker thing was also Demiurge's idea, and it even says that he disagrees with it but couldn't come up with an alternative, which is why he was angry but ultimately allowed them to intrude on the tomb. The whole world domination thing was because he was joking around and Demiurge took it literally, after which Ainz was too much of a coward to just come clean about it being a joke when they were flying in the sky looking at the new world. The most consistent thing about Overlord is that Momonga is a retard, but his lack of empathy and intelligence leads him to just accept whatever his minions decide.
