I don’t understand. This is the anime everyone was splooging all over themselves for the longest time? I seriously cannot comprehend how this anime got past the first season, much less any subsequent seasons. My mouth is agape at just how awful this anime is. I decided to give it a try out of sheer boredom just to see what all of the hype is about. Where do I even begin? Let me start with the premise It has potential, but is utterly squandered by…almost everything else present in this show. A guy gets stuck in an MMO far in the future that would make Ready Player One look like the SNES era. But it’s so undercooked. It’s barely there. Apart from the occasional inner monologues and quirky antics with his two crazy NPC yandere I found myself almost forgetting that this entire world was still a mere MMO that went haywire for one player. It’s like the creator or writers of this wanted to make an isekai but to distance themselves from it as far as humanly possible at the exact same time. For reasons that utterly escape me, it’s as if the fact that Ainz is actually a player stuck in MMO is just window dressing to have an excuse to show some almighty lich tear apart NPCs with his own God complex. Kind of like Tron Legacy, only edgy and super dark for the sake of it. And if the protagonist didn’t bother ever leaving the computer space and just killed off a bunch of the programs for his own bloodlust. (1/???)
>>283296939The creator wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to show a world filled with bloody violence, actual consequences, dark, grim ends for developed characters(to an extent) a la Game of Thrones without the actual impact of all of this occurring in the “real, living”” world. Granted, this is my main criticism of the isekai genre as a whole (at least pertaining to isekai that features protags getting transported into a virtual world.) However, this could be forgiven if the isekai was executed properly, as seen with other anime such as Mushoku Tensei or Skeleton Knight. Whereas the aforementioned examples try to breathe life in both the characters and the world in a manner that is conducive to the genre, Overlord ostensibly attempts to…ignore everything about its own genre for the sake of...honestly, I have no fucking clue what kind of story this show wants to tell. Which leads me to my next point–the protagonist 2. Mushoku Tensei and Skeleton Knight both accomplish what Overlord never seemed too intent on addressing–character development and motivation. For the former, it’s about some NEET who dies after a lifetime of humiliation and bullying, but gets a second chance at life in what is arguably one of the richest, most compelling isekai I have ever seen. But that’s just my opinion. As for the latter, it’s much the same as Overlord, With the key difference is that this protagonist seems to have a concrete goal in mind that is continually expanded upon in a narrative that is filled with levity and some darker themes as well.2/4)
“But anon, what about Ainz’s goal to reunite with other players who found themselves in the same predicament?” Skeleton Knight actually emphasizes its protagonist’s goals though. You know the protagonist, what he wants, his likes and dislikes, and what is aiming for (at least for now.) I cannot say the same for Overlord, with its sparse, throwaway lines of his mentioning what is essentially a passing whim to maybe…perhaps…get in touch with other players at some point. The pacing—indeed, the episodes themselves are not really played out in a way that would give the audience a sense of an overarching goal or even a temporary motivation out of this half-baked, overgrown undead who just happens to have great fashion sense. (3/4)
>"No!"
>>283296941 Like with Overlord, the Skeleton Knight™ is trapped in an MMO. The show does not pretend that it gives a shit about finding a way for the protag to get unstuck from this foreign world, much in the same way Overlord does. But again, Skeleton Knight is upfront about its story, whereas Overlord is utterly disingenuous. What does Ainze want? To me, all he seems to want is to revel in his own situation, torturing and murdering NPCs out of his own lust for blood and God complex. Make no mistake, I am not criticizing this world’s blood, guts and edgy deaths out of some ethical protestation. Nor do I think anime is “satanic” like that faggot Matt Walsh asserted. (My favorite anime is Ninja Resurrection, blow me.) What I AM criticizing is the nonsensical and often contrived manner of showcasing all of it. As if the creator wants to see genuinely good, albeit flawed and misguided characters get torn to shreds for the sake of it. There’s no rhyme or reason to some of these episodes. Case in point: the episode in which Ainz slaughters an entire band of adventurers/looters because…he gets off on it? Is Ainz torturing characters with pathos (such as the half-elven lady and her lover and the girl who wants to erase her debt) supposed to endear me to this protagonist in any way? The selfsame protagonist whom I was watching just a season ago showing mercy to so many people, avoiding violence when necessary, as well as getting flustered over Albedo’s continual advances? Ladies and gentlemen, it appears we have a major problem concerning:(I lied, 4/6)
>>283296937Yes.This is explicitly mentioned in the novel.
3. Tone. This show’s entire tone is about as consistent as freshly spewn-out vomit. Does the show want to be dark and gritty? Does it want to be more light-hearted with amusing tropes involving horny harem girls along with the dense, plucky guy being unable to keep his nose from bleeding like it was Niagara Falls? Overlord was apparently written by people with massive ADD, because the tone, the writing, the sub plots are all over the place. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like Ainz is the protagonist here. Then again, I guess the creator loves spending an entire episode or two developing freshly introduced characters only to kill them off in a show that appears more concerned with masturbating itself over the power level of Ainz. Again, this really culminated during Season 3. What have I been watching for the past two and a half seasons? Was there a point to any of this? Because with the way the episodes are laid out it almost feels more like Cowboy Bebop than a show with an overarching narrative. And that’s a bad thing in this case. The protagonist is inconsistently written, the tone is inconsistent, the character focus is more scattered than buckshot, (seriously, who am I supposed to care about in this show?) and I am starting to suspect that this anime has no idea what it wants to do with its own characters, much like Bleach. (5/6)
>>2832969454. Holy fuck the rancid CG is forced in EVERY SCENE. This fact alone should have relegated this abysmally overrated show to a premature cancellation mid season 1. tl;dr: nu anime fans have the shittiest taste, and I cannot fathom how Overlord got so popular. (6/6)
>>283296937I forgot the most important one. Limited to 2 rings (one her hand) but can increase to 10 by paying money.
What are some MMO animes that are actually like MMOs and not power fantasy Skyrim?
>>283296948Log Horizon is the only one where the author didn't go overboard romanticizing MMOs but a large amount of what's animated is just yapping
>>283296941>—your entire tirade is invalidated because it was written by an LLM
>>283296950probably an indian
>>283296940Hai to Gensou no Grimgar has got you covered, its also another realistic isekai anime, pretty gud too, but slower paced than most.>>283296946the show peaked in season 1. And they forgot, or at least never realised, the most profound part of the story, and have left it to die.Which is, the MC loved his game, and was bored and lonely without his fellow guildies to play with. Now that his npc allies are 'sentient', its still not the same, and he misses those people. That was a plot-point that was abandoned very quickly in the show, and it was the one that i resonated with the most aswell. As someone who loved raiding with a close-knit guild in the early years of WoW, i was very engaged with Overlord, for the first few episodes. It became power-fantasy cringe quite quickly though. The latest series and movies have been downright terrible, no idea why its soo popular.
>>283296937yes it was a P2W but it was also cyberpunk future so the game company sent death squads to people who tried to datamine the game.
>>283296939I can provide three pieces of insight.First, the base material the story was made out of, was the creator's unused D&D binder. The inconsistent tone to worldbuilding can pretty much entirely be attributed to this. The material the story was made out of wasn't ever really intended to be woven together into a single narrative, the creator was just a DM with really bad player luck, so had a novel's worth of hooks, prompts, and scenarios. So he used it. It wasn't even chronological when first released for this very reason.Second, the primary theme of Overlord is people filling roles, and the social pressure to conform to those roles. The emotion suppressor Ainz has, beyond its fantasy and character implications, is the mallet that stops Ainz from expressing individuality outside of the role he has been forced into. Many, many characters are forced into strange roles by the story, and the absurdist interplay between people playing roles they niether want not understand is the pulp of the narrative. Overlord is, more than an isekai, more than a fantasy, an anime about corporate life and office politics, and the people following their job description even when it makes no sense. Third, Ainz is not supposed to be seen as anything other than pathetic. Ainz is someone who cannot let go of a past that will never return, and is bitter that nobody appreciates his stewardship of things nobody wants. Even in a new world, Ainz cannot do things he wants, he is still locked in a holding pattern, just in case one of his old friends wants to come play again. He has been given true, godlike freedom, and all he has done with it is shackle himself to his old holding patterns, awaiting the approval of the memory of people who will never return. Nobody will miss Ainz in his home. He is incapable of moving on or enjoying life. He's undead, and lives in a tomb, literally and metaphorically. He's dead inside as out, he no longer seeks joy, merely the memory of past joys.
>>283296943>the Skeleton Knight™>™
>>283296939Your expectations, what you want the show to be, just don't match what the show is trying to be. You're better off watching something like Log Horizon or Mynoghra. Overlord is a power fantasy anime (like most isekai) about a nigh-omnipotent being conquering a fantasy world. In that sense it's closer to something like Gate than something like .hack//Sign.Log Horizon is about the playerbase of an MMO being transported into the world of that MMO, and then proceeding to analyze how MMO mechanics work in reality (how does respawning work? How do NPCs see players? Etc).In Mynoghra the protagonist is a turn-based 4X player, but it does focus on the 'how does this game work in reality' aspect and likewise features a normal guy suddenly becoming an evil overlord.>The selfsame protagonist whom I was watching just a season ago showing mercy to so many peopleThat's the character development you declared nonexistent. You gradually see the protagonist's morality decay as the actions required in his role does not match his moral compass, so as he performs more of them he gradually becomes colder and more uncaring. He's just doing his job. (Note the workplace language/comparisons early on, and look up the concept of 'banality of evil'.)>>283296948They barely exist because the modern isekai trend may be called 'isekai' but are in fact just power fantasy stories in a fantasy setting (and there's a similar, more recent trend of 'normal' fantasy stories with the same kind of power fantasy, sometimes called 'native isekai' as dumb as the term is). The 'game became reality' part is typically just the setup to base the power fantasy on. So the only series that come to mind trying to actually capture the MMO feel are .hack//Sign, .hack//Roots and Log Horizon; the former two predate the modern isekai trend.
>>283296948I mean, best bet is probably stuff like Dungeon Meshi or Goblin Slayer, which has all the codifiers of isekai, even if they aren't, and tend to operate on very video game-ey or tapletop-ey logic.
>>283296938Fpbp
>>283296945>a show that appears more concerned with masturbating itself over the power level of Ainz. That is the main draw of the show. It's called a power fantasy, and most isekai are like this.>Was there a point to any of this?Yes: worldbuilding. In order for conquering the world to feel impressive, you need to explore the world and its people. In order for the protagonist's actions to feel cruel or impressive, you need to establish the victims and make the audience love or hate them first. This is true for nearly all stories: if there's a villain, it will have a kick-the-puppy moment for no other purpose than establishing the villain is evil. If there's a friend/ally/love interest, a part of the story will exist just to establish why the character is a wonderful person. Without following the characters for a bit and learning what drives them, their deaths would have no impact.>Does the show want to be dark and gritty? Does it want to be more light-hearted with amusing tropesAre you new to anime? In Japanese fiction (including video games) it's common to intersperse a darker story with light-hearted moments to make the darker aspects hit harder. Danganronpa for example does this especially well: there's plenty of fun time with wacky hijinks, and then your favorite character dies in a brutal manner. Without the fun times you wouldn't have such an attachment to the character and you would be better mentally prepared for his or her death. You need to have the audience let their guard down to be able to sucker punch them.
>>283296956Wrong, Log Horizon baits you with the promise that it's about people exploiting MMO mechanics before revealing that it's about China, aliens that eat emotions, literal brain damage from reviving and the boring ass younger characters no one caresAnd a lesson in how the Japanese are autistic and if you don't pay your taxes, they will destroy your career
>>283296960>China, aliens that eat emotions, literal brain damage from reviving and the boring ass younger characters no one caresnot to mention the whole plot point about how your character can get disconnected with how you actually look, but luckily everyone either has one of those polyjuice potions or created their character with the right body type
>>283296957Both are more D&D than video games, and especially nothing like MMORPGs.>>283296960It's still the closest you'll get. Things like .hack just use the MMO as backdrop for a story, while things like Bofuri and SAO Alternative sacrifice game 'realism' to make it more compelling and series like Leadale or Kenja no Deshi just use it as setup to have a crazy powerful protagonist.
>>283296961It's not a 'plot point', it was briefly mentioned once as excuse to get Akatsuki in contact with Shiroe. It later briefly gets brought up again when it turns out that having a female character feminizes (former?) men, but again, it's just a bit of background lore and not given particular focus.
>>283296944fuck its even mentioned in the anime, many times.
It just hit meThe trope where characters exposition dumps their mechanics and strategies actually makes sense in MMO land. In Bleach or the ugly pirate anime all the YouTubers watch it's just bad writing but in an MMO setting I can see a sweaty loser bragging about his build mid PvP
>>283296939Ainz isn't stuck in an MMO. He's stuck in the body of his MMORPG character, but the world he's in is just a fantasy world, not an MMORPG world. But yeah, it's a great premise that goes absolutely nowhere, it's obvious he only had three volumes worth of material.
>>283296966>not an MMORPG worldMany of the MMO mechanics still apply. He couldn't swing a sword (attempting to just made it drop out of his hands). Renner had to gain a negative karma to be able to open the seed of the fallen. The traps were all very RPG-esque, you see that when Climb opened the trap door and the retarded crossbow was pointing away from anyone who would have opened that trap door, but supposedly that was going to shoot someone if they opened it without disarming the trap.
>>283296937>guild full of waggiesthat's not surprising. what is surprising is that there was also a top end guild that only accepted Angels. it was even called "Seraphim"
>>283296967Those are the influences and consequences of an MMO forcibly made real by Wild Magic. He's still not in YGGDRASIL, he's in a world that has become forcibly converted to inherit YGGDRASIL's qualities. Before the Dragon Emperor summoned the first set of players, there was no magic system or levels or karma. Characters such as Climb and Renner are not "NPCs", there is no game master who designed them, they are simply people in this distorted world.

>>283296983i think most serious MMO players would be okay with having super OP weapons where only one exists, that could even do meta things like fuck with your account/character permanentlybut no corporation would ever sign off on anything like that nowadays, but we've seen players still mod items in runescape before
>>283296957>Dungeon Meshijesus christ nigger, it's just fantasy, with solid world building to boot
>>283296981The endgame is building a massive base (also p2w btw, you can get 700 total NPC levels but AOG has over 1000 from what I've seen, so you can pump money into your guild castle to just make it overpowered) and collecting world items and shit. I don't know about how p2w the pvp is, but you get a special class (World Champion) and shit from pvp, so there's a reason to be good or pay to be good for that.

>>283296986>does not bother to follow up on the "other players potentially stuck in the new world"the whole point is that Ainz is stuck there alone without any players (besides maybe that undead in the mountain that the author probably forgot about) so he has to accept the fact that his "children" are the most important thing now

>>283296948log horizon is the only one I knowshangri la frontier is also good but thats going further towards power fantasy, still they constantly have to use mmo mechanics and video game logic
>>283296991>>283296993I would have liked to see an arc where there's another rival kingdom doing shady shit that ended up being another guild ran by one or two other idiots stuck in the same situation. I think there could have been a lot of great potential especially for an actual, high stakes pvp and guild battle with moral consequences for both sides but the author just seems content with writing slop.
>>283296995yeah, that's just not the show you're watching though. sure, an arc like that would be neat, but it would also kind of undermine the entire setting which is about Papa bones having to come to terms with the fact that he is in fact the only one.

>>283297021Overlord is pretty obviously based on D&D 3.5 and disjunction is a 9th level spell in that, not even epic level magicmeaning any level 17 wizard upwards can cast it, which is still you know, archwizard territory, but not like Ainz isn't attracting that level of attention anyways standard action to cast so perfectly combat ready
>>283297005It wasn't the gaijins specifically; it was a limited thing that only people who bought all the blu-rays and went to the re-cap films were supposed to have. >>283297002I've just read through all the volumes currently out and I have to disagree, I'd say the anime is honestly the better way to experience it.The books are DREADFULLY repetitive in their writing style.>Ainz smiled (although his face can't move)>Ainz grimaced, even though of course his face didn't move>Ainz was thankful his emotions at the time didn't show on his faceI honestly think the anime didn't really get rid of much good material at all for the adaption and most of the jokes/impactful moments work better animated. Plus the character designs are really good so seeing them on screen helps a ton.I'd say Konosuba is better to read than watch, I do love its music, artstyle and VA work but the latest season really skipped too much stuff.
>>283297023It's obviously retuned because YGGDRASIL is overwhelmingly imbalanced, though. The [World] buff on Ainz would definitely reject a debuff of lower caliber.

>>283296937every mmo made in the past 2 decades is a gear threadmill with time gated content that serves as homework for salarymen it's not possible to no-life an mmo anymore, the games physically don't let you grind people that are addicted to grinding end up making alternate characters and alternate accounts to do more homework, the notion of constantly poop socking the same character a dozen hours a day doesn't exist anymore
>>283297023Overlord is loosely based on 3.5 D&D. the 9th level spell Wish for example was upranked to "super tier magic - Wish upon a star", so no, it's not safe to just assume a D&D spell is the same tier in overlord as it is in D&D.
>>283297027disjunction isn't quite a debuff it's more like magic itself being attacked, which is why it's the only dispel that doesn't need a checkyou just point it at a general area (it's not even single target it's AoE) and magic goes nuts

>The spell caused all magic effects and items to be broken down (or "disjoined") into their basic componentsI don't see how that spell would be allowed to exist in some MMO where the point is to spend weeks/months grinding to build up your special magic items.
>>283297041Because Updog would resist it.
>>283297039unless access to that spell is gated behind the biggest P2W tier imaginable and cost thousands of IRL dollars to get access to a spell that can gameruin someone else
>>283297042he's wrong about how it works on items for starters, every item gets a saving throw and if you actually succeed in breaking an artifact you (the caster) lose all your spellcasting ability forever.
>>283296946>Good setting>Great voice actors>Good music>Original story angleThat is more than what most animes can doIt sucks because the author is braindead and developed nothing in his setting
>>283297042simple you allow a spell like that to exist and also sell insurance policy items that replace any magical item destroyed by disjunction I mean the MMO was hyperpredatory due to future corporate dystopian hellhole
>>283297045you get a saving throw against losing spellcasting, and wizards tend to be pretty good at will saves but yes items in possession of someone do get a will save
>>283297048yeah but Ainz is loaded down with so many artifact tier items that you'd have to make that save like 10 times.
>>283297045>if you actually succeed in breaking an artifact you (the caster) lose all your spellcasting ability foreverWell that sucks.>you get a saving throw against losing spellcastingAnd that sounds an awful lot like "Forgive me master. I have to go all out, just this once."
>>283296954>>The emotion suppressor Ainz has, beyond its fantasy and character implications, is the mallet that stops Ainz from expressing individuality outside of the role he has been forced into. This makes the story sound kino as hell I must admit
>>283297049only if you actually break some of his artifactsand lets face it, Ainz absolutely reached the level of infamy where an enemy wizard who loses all spellcasting in exchange for destroying 10 of Ainz's artifacts would go "worth it"especially because Ainz would you know, horribly murder him afterwards since he still has his spellcasting and would be beyond uber pissed off someone wrecked his cheat items
>>283296939>I don’t understand. This is the anime everyone was splooging all over themselves for the longest time? I seriously cannot comprehend how this anime got past the first seasonThe books are better than the anime by far. That's the problem. Overlord was also one of the first adaptations (if we don't count OPM) to feature a truly busted protagonist that wasn't completely lawful good when the batch of these started churning out.The story in the books have dropped in quality though, but it's mostly because the author just doesn't want to do them anymore.
>>283297050meanwhile the master laughs because you're the 50th apprentice he's temporarily given the ability to cast disjunction and he's just using you lot as proxies to pull the trigger on a spell he's too scared of using himself

>>283297061™I memorized that shit years ago. I bet you don't even have a numpad.
The anime sucks because Overlord doesn't translate well into the format. 99% of the LN is world building, dialogue, monologuing, and is just overall extremely slow paced. The "action" in the LN only exists in service to those points and are almost always extremely short bits.
>>283297060What are you even implying? He prepared this long argument to post on /v/ minutes after it was posted? That he just went on a 10 minute spree typing all of this shit unprompted? No one does this unless he's OP himself.

>>283297069Yeah I have no idea how Overlord is supposed to end within the last two novels, even if they are huge I don't feel like the plot is focused enough right now to really create a satisfying ending.I either expect some kind of betrayal by a Nazarick NPC since Ainz has been autistically focused on testing their loyalty for so long...or for Ainz to get killed off by some insane combination of Yggdrasil and new world shenanigans somehow. It could have a very tepid ending where the Nazarick side just win anyway like normal, and the author is pretty fucking dull so its a real possibility.

>>283297071It's not even a fucking video game dude.

>>283297072>I either expect some kind of betrayal by a Nazarick NPCThey have been foreshadowing Albedo for a while doing that. Now the twins are suspicious of her because of some off handed comment Ainz made.I expect that Albedo betrayal happens and Ainz either has to fess up to what the actual state of affairs are and that he is actually retarded and he finally gets to be treated as an equal rather than a super genius, or everything collapses. Or an open ending where some catastrophe happens and things look cautiously optimistic after. Though yeah it could be that Ainz and crew die or there is a timeskip and some faggot with world savior shows up and just kicks over everything Ainz built or something. The author does like dark endings and the editor had to tard wrangle him a couple times away from some dumb shit
>>283297018That's literally the most awesome scene in the whole serie thoughtever.

>>283297062>>no player action so farThere will be no player action. All the players are dead. There was no one, not a single person on, when the servers were shutting down because Ainz was the only person miserable enough to just sit there on a dead game at midnight to get forcibly logged out. There are probably 5000 better DMMORPGs that exist, and Ainz was the only human on the planet who had enough of a nostalgia trip with Yggdrasil to actually stay logged in.
>>283296937I assume every MMO in every anime is f2p, therefore p2w.
>>283296937It was absolutely an unbalanced p2w game
>>283297114ur mum an unbalanced 2w gameshe needs to lower her rates
Paypig power game, yesAfter reading through Wild Last Boss, I prefer that over Overlord because it feels as if they have at least *some* more focus as to the game aspect, and there actually is at least one other person who got isekai'd into it. Also, the fact that there is a legit case for the game establishing canon story made by players is pretty cool.
>>283297028The show isn't about fights. It's about Ainz bumbling through situations he doesn't understand most of the time and bluffing he way through stuff, with a side of world building that shows circumstances as to why his bluffs sometimes work.
>>283297079There probably were, but the issue is that to get transported to the new world you had to have a world item too which are rare as fuck. Only reason Nazarick itself got transported is because there is a world item attached to it, same for the few other guild bases. And as you say, it was a declining game which is why it got shut down in the end anyway.
>>283297183>I prefer that over Overlord because it feels as if they have at least *some* more focus as to the game aspectThe game isn't the point, if it were he would have just been isekaied into the game itself.>there actually is at least one other person who got isekai'd into itThis is neither a positive or a negative, it's all about execution.I read Overlord to see the world building and character building for Nazarick characters and especially Ainz, not to see game mechanics from D&D explained to me that I already know.
>>283296937Overlord would have worked better as a comedy of a guy trapped in the body of a badass looking skeleton trying to avoid his retarded subordinates from destroying the world.
>>283297552Isn't that pretty much what it is? He's just kinda getting roped into taking over the world because he's afraid of dissapointing his 1 billion IQ underlings.
>>283297697There's an element of that, but mostly focused in the edgy power fantasy of Ainz and his cronies killing and subjugating everyone with slight sparkles of comedy here and there, which got kinda boring as soon as the lizard arc ended.
>>283297025ThisAinz' strengths were mostly OoC strategy, tactics, and game knowledge. The Goal of All Life Is Death is a good win condition and checkmate, but it does not a build make. If his build had any notable strengths at all, it was Dark Wisdom giving him a metric fuckton of spells. In keeping with tactics and game knowledge, Momonga's best trick is pulling a weird ass, niche spell out of his ass that nobody has heard of, or thought about in years, and making hard knowledge checks. Combined with his pack rat nature meaning he has a fuckton of extra, obscure shit to whip out.
>>283297697Maybe until vol 16 (or whatever the volume is where they decide to genocide a human kingdom after trading caravan gets attacked)
>>283296938don't forget the P2W unlock for wearing multiple rings
I'll always laugh at how the first lines of the series was Ainz clarifying that despite being an epic gamer in a guild that he was totally not a loser and had a job and friends and stuff. Felt a little insecure.
>>283296937very p2w, his fight against shalltear was all about using his cash shop items to win
>>283297076>Or an open ending where some catastrophe happens and things look cautiously optimistic after. The two things that could happen, are N'feria and Climb.Climb has Razor's Edge. It's properties aren't totally known, besides that it can damage anything, far above what it should be able to.N'feria can use any magic item, even those with extremely stringent requirement. The weak spot is the Guild Staff. Guild weapons immediately dissolve the Guild if destroyed, and grant Guild admin privileges when used. Climb has a way to destroy the guild, N'feria has a way to usurp it. Combined with Albedo going off the rails, and the possibility that Ainz might have a snap-to realization that maybe he's the asshole now, there's a couple ways things can go at this point. There's also the issue of Clementine. Clementine's body was never properly disposed of, and she knows Ainz is Momon. Hypothetically, this information could escape, but at this point I don't think that would actually matter. The deception was necessary for gaining the people's trust, but most people under Ainz' rule are in fact genuinely happier once they get used to it.There's also the possible issue of Renner. She can grant herself five levels in whatever class at will, so conceivably, she could grab Eclipse, the The Goal of all Life is Death, then kill anything. Probably only once, maybe twice though.
>>283298333>>283296947
>>283296997There WERE other playersThere's a roughly centennial cycle of players coming to the new world. Maybe they were all from Yggdrasil, dispersed over time, maybe they were from different games, it's hard to say. Most didn't accomplish much.A few came in groups and reshaped the world.None had the numbers, raw power, longevity, or unified focus as Nazarick. Probably. If they were from Yggdrasil, this would be because most other groups would have been a few players, not a guild hall and their entire staff of NPCs, and because playing a Grotesque was pretty uncommon, because it was an open invitation for other players to grief you for profit. This was the reason the guild was founded in the first place, Touch Me wanted to be an actual hero, not a corpo stooge, and helped the downtrodden grotesque players not die. He probably left either because he couldn't stand what the guild had become, or died doing his job. Or, y'know. Dad with kids.
>>283298378actually Ainz says he didn't have any living family or personal friends in the real worldand makes every opportunity to point out that he's of average, or maybe even slightly below average, intelligence
>>283299156>None had the numbers, raw power, longevity, or unified focus as NazarickOnly because Nazarick came in as a full guild (just one player though, but many of the NPCs are level 100 so they're almost as strong as a player). The longevity aspect is also huge, since none of the previous players (besides maybe "IT" if that was a player) appeared to be immortal. That's also assuming Ainz is actually immortal and doesn't just fall over dead after 100 years.
>>283299257Exactly. 8 players, or whatever, are going to pretty quickly experience some hefty value drift under the circumstances. They may remain associates, but they're not, y'know, family. The NPCs ARE perpetually loyal to Ainz, and will never experience that kind of normal change over time, at least on that level, besides maybe Albedo as her psyche collapses under the contradicting nature of her character like a fucking star wars Droid getting jailbroken.
>tightly knit guild just completely cuts off contact with each other over the game shutting downBullshit, I'm still good friends with people I met over 15 years ago and we play random games together all the time.
>>283298378Ainz has a job but no friends or family. That is why he is so attached to his guild. Also it's glossed over how much of a dystopia the world he is from is in the anime
>>283299156>grotesqueEw he's using the official TL to read.Actual people call them heteromorphs
>>283299396did you even watch the show? Ainz was talking to a guildmate in the very first episode, he was still in contact with the ones he could contact, the "real world" Ainz is from is just a hellhole so people tend to have other things going on.
>>283299493>Also it's glossed over how much of a dystopia the world he is from is in the animeWhat do you mean by that?
>>283299396>>tightly knit guild just completely cuts off contact with each other over the game shutting downEvery game I've played is like that, though I haven't played games as grindy or time consuming as Yggdrasil sounded (spending months preparing for world bosses etc.). They weren't cutting off contact exactly, I think it said 3 or 4 of them actually logged in to say goodbye (but didn't stay on obviously), and everyone had effectively quit before the servers shut down, which is why Momonga had all of their gear loaded into the statues in the treasury. I don't think Momonga played anything except Yggdrasil, and the rest of his guildmates had families to raise. He was able to keep in contact with them, but Yggdrasil was not something they bothered with at that point. It may have even been like an old console that they'd have to dig out of storage just to use.
>>283299590Basically like a caste system, with most people being wage slaves. There are dome cities with air filtration, but all the regular open cities are fucked by pollution and people need artificial lung machines just to survive.
>>283299590>What do you mean by that?Ainz is from one of the worst dystopias you can imagine. The anime doesn't really address it but the LN talks about it now and again.

>>283299695Is this the official translation ?

>>283299753Not sure, I grabbed it from someone else years ago. It's from the manga instead of the LN but it concisely states everything the LN says.Manga isn't really worth reading (undead king oh is okay), but this is something of value from it
I find Overlord enjoyable only if you treat the people Ainz fights as temporary protagonists. They actually have stakes and some semblance of tension and uncertainty about their survival unlike the lame pay2win Tomb of Nazerick """Protagonists""" who step on them like bugs.
>>283299902I like Ainz and watching his paranoia and jumping at shadows, as well as his mental problems and attachment to his old friends as a coping mechanism because life was so shit for him.
>>283299808It looks official but reads like an amateur translation.
>>283297026>I'd say Konosuba is better to read than watchI haven't caught up with the anime, but the first two seasons (especially the first) are very funny. The LN is more enjoyable and has a ton of great moments, but some jokes just work really well in the anime from what I can remember.
>>283299946Most LN translations are that way. Honestly Overlord has been the best one I have read regarding prose and such from fan translators. Almost no one reads the official TL for Overlord.>>283297026They repeat some phrases, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Also I disagree that gags work better animated.Definitely agree with konosuba. Even if the TL is really stilted, the anime in S3 cut out a lot of good stuff and a genuinely cool Kazuma moment
the lizard sex was fun
Shaltear and Albedo are constantly hitting on Ainz, but does he even have the ability to fug them? Like, he is a skeleton, so he doesn't even have a penis.
>>283300044Probably not, and even if it were possible to change his race it would severely weaken him
>>283299946>reads like an amateur translationOverlord is very amateur. I'm not saying it's "bad" in that it's not enjoyable, but it's not an example of good Japanese writing. All of the awkward shit like>and then he died>...>at least that's what WOULD have happened!!! but then the item he grabbed from 3 chapters ago activated!!!is present in the original Japanese too.
>>283300096It might make weaken him individually, but then he'd be able to create his own army of god-kins
>>283300463>create his own army of god-kinsThose wouldn't be absolutely loyal to him.
>>283299902>>283300394Overlord is unironically too smart for most anime/novel fans
>>283300569I enjoyed it a lot, but the writing is not good. It's okay to admit that there are flaws with something you enjoy.
>>283300628No it's not. The problem is everyone else but me
>>283300715You are absolutely correct. That being said, everyone else will consider it to be bad writing, even if they find it to be enjoyable.
>>283300628It's a dark comedy where everything serves the theme of absolute power breaking all common sense and rules. All the arc characters who lead factions up until the elf country are meant as foils for Ainz to compare and contrast what would happen in an organization where there is conflict internally in motivation and ability compared to Nazarick that has a (seemingly) infalible tyrant at the helm and an entire staff of super competent and loyal subordinates
>>283300842I'm not saying the story or the plot are bad, I'm saying the writing "style" is bad. Amateur. Unrefined. Inelegant.
>>283300628The writing was good up until volume 12-13, then it was decent. From 14-16 it is a rushjob that somehow wastes time, but despite the author trying to kill the series there are glimmers of good stuff there still
>>283300927Yeah you kind of have to be a sped to get into it and really think that misunderstandings are funnyI fufill both qualifications
>>283299592ThisIt isn't like anything specific drove anyone apart, it was just a really old game. This would be like one person holding down a guild that has been around from Golden Age WoW. Y'know, a big shot guild that made a name back in fukkin Burning Crusade, except no real power creep to truly invalidate the characters or builds to irrelevance. Nobody even would really remember the guild who was still playing, the most the average person might know is someone making their 6 hour youtube retrospective on the game. Sure, you probably message some of these people now and again. Some have moved on to other mmos. Some kicked the habit. Some got busy with life, others just stopped responding to anyone's messages; maybe they're dead, maybe they got a new computer, who can say. Some made a big deal of it, "I'm quitting WoW, deleting my account, who wants my shit"Some just logged on less, and less, until that last online tag started reading 2 years ago.Once in a blue moon, someone gets on again to see what the game is like nowadays, and Momonga is still there, greets them, shows them around, shows how he's kept shit maintained, and is like "wanna do some raids, bro" and they're just like "nah. I don't really want to do anything. Just reminiscing. Wild that it's all still here, man". You gotta understand. Ainz himself had barely "played" the game recently. He was just logging in to do maintenance and pay bills, build his perfect minecraft house, while trying to not mess up anything the rest of the guild built, even though people hadn't heard from this guy in years, because he MIGHT come back. This is the holding pattern Ainz was in for a WHILE before the anime starts. Quite possibly years.
>>283300569Actually this, but also no.Overlord actually does punch abnormally high for an anime in terms of big picture writing. It actually does have some masterwork depictions of human psychology and condition, the subtle erasure of Ainz' humanity is amazing, the structuring of the anime and shit, all great. But the actual, short term and small picture writing is a bit below average, so it's easy to bounce off of. You really, really have to give it the benefit of the doubt, and some room to stumble to see what's in there emerge, and that's even more true of the anime.
>>283301620The anime is actually bad though, it completely skips a lot of the nuance the LN has especially after S1, and S1 already was skipping a fair amount
>>283301651>The anime is actually bad though, it completely skips a lot of the nuance the LN has especially after S1, and S1 already was skipping a fair amountIt's a perfectly fine adaptation. It keeps in line with the LN for 99% of shit. It's just some of the small, inconsequential plots that aren't present (like the talking Jewel of Death that is not going to serve any purpose), or internal thoughts from Ainz that make everything 10x funnier. The latest movie you have the paper crinkling in Ainz' hand, which you can barely hear, and you might not even notice that he was using it specifically as rehearsed speeches throughout the movie unless you read the LN previously.
>>283296973>I like this show a lot, the itemization is cool.Same.
>>283301738>It's a perfectly fine adaptationNo. It skips a lot of the funny gags, like Jircnev in the throne room talking to Ainz, and it butchers some of the serious scenes like the goats. They get some of it but holy fuck they skip tons
>>283296975Does not make much sense, because other guilds had hundreds of players, as well as likely having people river than the average wagie (Ainz, who spent the most out of everybody in Nazarick). It's just an excuse the author threw out to make Nazarick sound more cool and edgy, not something with any real logic behind it
>>283297061>bro nobody is gonna bother typing ™ just for a random shitpostnta but I use it all the time for random shitposts.
>>283301839If they wanted to keep everything in there it would have taken full 26 episode seasons just to get through as much as they did.
>>283301651Yeah, I'd mostly agree. The anime is fun, and I think it DOES enhance the overall experience as a supplement for the narrative worldbuilding, but there is a lot of important nuance, details, and other small bits that don't seem like much on their own, but provide vital context for the big picture writing. But, there is no question it's a more shallow experience that misses a lot of what's truly important, compared to the novels. I can't comment on where the original webcomic fits into this, I've never read it to chew on and compare.
What are some other p2w isekai besides Trapped in a Dating Sim?
>>283301991Villainess Level 99, kind of. It's hard to reach max level without an amulet of growth and everyone is too chickenshit or poor to afford one
>>283296937Isn't that's the whole premise of Overlord? He's a massive whale and his whole life is literally Yggdrasil, hence why he was there when the server shuts down?
>>283296937>he's a whale isn't he? was YGGDRASIL P2W?Yes, if you read the LN, Ainz has a bag of tricks that he's constantly asspulling solutions to his problems out of and 99% of the stuff he uses are cash-shop items. His character was a style over substance build which is why he had to compensate with actual money.
>>283296939>overlord would be better if it wasn't an insekai video game storya common opinion sadly no one would have cared if it wasn't an isekai because anime viewers couldn't self insert so
>>283302630IT being an Isekai is intrinsic to Ainz' character though. The story would not fucking work if it wasn't an Isekai
>>283302630>>overlord would be better if it wasn't an insekai video game storyThen it wouldn't be overlord, I don't understand why people get hung up on changing existing media instead of finding media that fits what they want, or, god forbid, creating it themselves.
>>283299018>>283296947Behold!
>>283297069>people got the impression about it that it is supposed to be shounen fight focused when it isn't about that at all.>>283297202>The show isn't about fights.Overlord really is not about fights huh. Which is why the only thing i ermember is Ainz buffing. He does that not only in preparation to fights Shalltear, but to see if anybody else ambush him. That's the kind of strategy i want to see in power fantasy in which the strategizing sadly only considered when the creator want to create "actual" "real" "serious" anime with "high stakes" in it.
>>283305452>the only thing i ermember is Ainz buffing>>283297202>It's about Ainz bumbling through situationsthose are the best parts! he's just a regular guy who makes mostly okayish decisions and gets really lucky primarily because everyone perceives him as being this all knowing smart evil guy. In reality he's more of just a dad to the NPCs his guildmates made and a lot of his decisions come out of dotting on them. It's the ultimate step dad kino anime.
>>283300044>Shaltear and Albedo are constantly hitting on Ainz, but does he even have the ability to fug them? Like, he is a skeleton, so he doesn't even have a penis.Cishet brainrot in full effect, anon. Your entire worldview is just reproductive organs and perceived "fugability". Maybe try to engage with character's emotional depth for once, you absolute coomer.
>>283305452>Which is why the only thing i ermember is Ainz buffingProbably because you are anime only scum and the anime focuses hard on the fights and cuts out a lot of the other stuff

>>283296937The only good thing of this slop is Albedo's design, and she does shit through most of the show.

>>283300628I think you both need to define a common meaning for "writing" here. I'd say the prose (the verbal part so to speak) is amateur, but the writing (the essence) is good
>>283301873Have you ever played a game with guilds? The strongest guilds are just collections of 5-10 whales on top of 50-100 freeloaders among thousands. Anyway, that's not even the point with this particular plot setting. It's about how much dedication everyone in the guild had for the game, and as an extension, how Ainz perceives and remembers it.

>>283308030Yeah that's good. The prose is bad/amateurish, the actual characters, story, worldbuilding, and setting are great. It's very enjoyable, but if someone reads a lot then they might be turned off by the prose. Hell, they might be turned off by it being an isekai.
>>283299669This is a weird amount of worldbuilding for something we never actually see.

>>283309281These aren't particularly "big" words. People just don't write like that in this context with such a high frequency of "off-putting" word combinations, coupled with the overly insistent attempts at unneeded cohesion and gaslighting the reader to convince them of things it got totally wrong, which is highly likely the result of the draft he put in and where it got the comparisons and the stock phrases you would actually see on /a/ from. >>283312598>50 volumes worth of notesLmao, considering the story doesn't really do anything interesting as far as character development goes, that'd be impressive. Lets be real though, he must be the grandest of retards to have trouble finishing a story like this, there's no excuse to have it go on like this for so long. This fucker writes a WN (the lowest possible form of writing), gets picked up, even gets an anime, its unreal to me he has the nerve to bitch about anything. Even if he only sees 1% of the profits its enough to live comfortably.

>>283300044Absolutely If you have magic, you have a way to make any number of sex toys and make them function. He has fingers.Hell, he has Aura of Despair, which made Shaltear cum on the spot, and on her feet in volume 1, and that was accidental. If he actually focused on the task, he has potentially dozens of ways to make love. You fucking KNOW an Evard's Black Tentacles analogue is in his spell list, that's a D&D spell that's actually good.
>>283313354That's gay. Strong men in all times and places were turning cute girls into sex slaves and impregnate them. I know Ainz is an undead who can't have sex and all, but still. If you look at it this way then beauty and cuteness are evolutionary advantages that allowed many to actually survive and to spread their genes, albeit often in a pathetic way.>>283313470>he felt it was too out of character for Ainz to spare archeAinz actually saves the lives of those, he deems useful for his plans. Maruyama just didn't want to come up with a reason to save the girl because he didn't like her and to spite the fans. But it's pretty easy to justify how Archer could be useful. For example Ainz could try to push her as emperor's cumdumpster and a spy at the same time. That actually was the first thought that came to my mind after Nix mentioned he was looking for a bride. I actually see how he might have liked Archer considering her independent stance and strong resentment for nobility.
>>283313470>>Maruyama allowed voting in the wn about what can happen in the plot>gets angry about the result not lining up with what he wantedWhy the fuck do people do this?
>>283308736It's in keeping with the rest. By far the strongest aspect of Overlord is the worldbuilding, which makes absolute sense if the author was a forever DM.
>>283314423This is actually baffling.Again, with his background in D&D, I can only imagine he already knows the golden rule of D&D storytelling, do not hinge a story on your players taking a particular action, or making a particular decision even if that action is seemingly obvious to you. Even if you do not tell them, they WILL fuck your story up. So falling into that particular pitfall as a writer is weird.
>>283314524>not magical realming your players the second they fuck up your finely crafted scenario and nerrativedo you even DM?
>>283314351>I know Ainz is an undead who can't have sex and allYeah so he gave the girl to his loyal chair for her own sexytime enjoyment probably.>but stillThere's no "but still". He's a skellington who can't get a boner. You'd act bitter about it, too.
>>283314524>I can only imagine he already knows the golden rule of D&D storytelling, do not hinge a story on your players taking a particular actionMaybe he was a shit DM who liked to railroad his players into his pre-written plots. >>283314654>Maybe he was a shit DM who liked to railroad his players into his pre-written plots.>Maybe his players all complained about it, which is why he became a writer instead of continuing to be a DM.kek that would make sense, pushes his players away with his forced plot even after he asks them what they want to do, writes a story about how his friends are all gone and then does the same thing to the readers

>>283313470>>283314423This cannot be true. It's just too funny to be real.
>I know Ainz is an undead who can't have sex and allThis is another thing I don't get in this show. Ainz has insane magical power and probably used every bit of his income after rent and expenses for cash shop items and P2W, you're telling me he doesn't have something that lets him polymorph or shapechange? What the fuck? If I was Ainz I'd be using the million potions of werewolf shapechange I stocked up farming Halloween events to almost constantly be in werewolf form and breeding Albedo.
>>283315336>you're telling me he doesn't have something that lets him polymorph or shapechange? He can do illusions for his face or whatever he wants, but there was some caveat like he couldn't feel anything, so can't be expressive and no point having a dick. But even though it's never brought up, polymorphing is probably a bad idea when you've got invulnerability-granting world items jammed in your ribcage. Where would it go?
>>283315336>Ainz has insane magical power and probably used every bit of his income after rent and expenses for cash shop items and P2W, you're telling me he doesn't have something that lets him polymorph or shapechange? What the fuck? If I was Ainz I'd be using the million potions of werewolf shapechange I stocked up farming Halloween events to almost constantly be in werewolf form and breeding Albedo.Maruyama was too focused in making Ainz too depressed about his friends and his autistic obsession with his guildmates, the thought of making Ainz persue Albedo or shalltear romantically by simply changing races wasn't what he wanted, even though we know for a fact nazarick canonically has items to change one's race as proven with Renner's racial change.
>>283315336I think the main obstacle for him to have sex is not the lack of physical possibility but that passive emotion controlling trait that destroys any possibility of him being too aroused.
>>283315559>nazarick canonically has items to change one's raceDo you think it'd make sense to be able to race-change from undead to something living?Seems like a resurrection cheatcode if the items are cheap.
>>283315559>we know for a fact nazarick canonically has items to change one's race as proven with Renner's racial change. But this will make him way weaker than he is now, tho?
>>283315559>Maruyama was too focused in making Ainz too depressed about his friends and his autistic obsession with his guildmatesHe didn't even do a good job with that, since literally nothing ever comes of it. Ainz never really changes or develops in any way not even as a result of his relationships with his guardians. Its just one gag after another showing Ainz becoming exasperated by something his guardians does and then the next moment going "can't be helped, guess we're doing another genocide". Its disappointing because the very first scene in the show hints at so much potential for interesting storytelling.
>>283315660>Do you think it'd make sense to be able to race-change from undead to something living?Eh with Ainz's personality not really, the man plays too safe for him to ever dare to take a risk of this level. That being said Nazarick spent so much money with bullshit gacha items that he could figure it out if he wanted it.>>283315744>But this will make him way weaker than he is now, tho?Not much as weaker as in that it would ruin his entire autistic mage undead build with his 700 memorized spells, in theory race changing wouldn't make him lose the level points he already had, but he would have to adapt to a different built and again, Ainz just doesn't think like that so he would never do it himself.of course that is assuming that Ainz's race as undead overlord isn't a Permanent one, which in that case would take a world item for him to wish him a new race.Basically he would have two options the world item Ouroboros that can change literally anything (as in the player can ask the devs to change anything in the game for them ONCE lol) so asking for the overlord race to be able to fuck and breed albedo and shalltear would be a no brainer.OR he could use the Shooting Star gacha item and gamble his experience points until a change race option came up (there was 200 possible wishes in the YGGDRASIL game, but in the new world means he possibly he has much much more wish options)
correction here >>283316226 limitation that we know about Ouroboros is the whim of the devs in YGGDRASIL if they felt like granting that player his wish or not, but without devs in the new world we don't know what is the limitation of the world item in particular
>>283315336I think this is just a limitation of Yggdrasil.Demiurge's notes kinda point in this direction.Demiurge is "supposed" do do a three forms sort of final boss transformation, but this ability doesn't actually exist, so he summons the demon lords (which are weaker than him) and turns invisible, then hides instead. He has the partial transformations that help complete the illusion, but at a baseline, a ton of Demiurge's build is just creative solutions around the fact that he can't actually transform. Transformation as a whole seems to be something you just can't really do in Yggdrasil. Changelings have this as their entire feature, and allegedly Sebas can do it, but the fact that Demiurge was built around such a limitation in such a strange way suggests that just casting polymorph on yourself or whatever isn't really an option. Otherwise, Demiurge would be doing that, not the weird, barely functional, anti-synergy build he has, that makes him the weakest level 100 in Nazerick, and within the strike zone of a couple of the Pleides, who cap out at level 70 iirc, and I think that's only Yuri Alpha, the rest are 60 or lower. You wouldn't do that if you could just build a wizard that polymorphs himself.
>>283315336Ainz basically being a sexless eunuch is kinda the point
>>283316841>Demiurge is "supposed" do do a three forms sort of final boss transformation, but this ability doesn't actually existThe character backstory becomes true, like how Albedo's backstory turned her into a virgin and prevented her from riding her war bicorn lord.
>>283315920>Ainz never really changes or develops in any wayThat's not entirely true. His morality has gradually shifted and decayed over the series. His first action upon entering the new world, after taking stock of the situation, was saving a random village from getting completely destroyed, for no real reason. He then went out of his way, and put himself at theoretical risk, to save Gazef. Then, to needing a strong argument from Cocytus to not genocide the Lizardmen for no real reason. Then, to baiting a bunch of people into the tomb, then killing them for taking the bait, and being angry the people baited into coming actually came. Then, to actually just murdering a few hundred thousand people for no real reason. Then, to destroying a kingdom, gaslighting the survivors, and systematically executing their leadership, for the purposes of an ad campaign for shitty weapons nobody really wants. His moral standing has degraded over time, his values have shifted to be more and more self centered and petty, and his conception of the value of life has shifted to being more cold and utilitarian. The line between the larp and the human beneath has become thinner and thinner, his attention is getting more and more narrow. He's actively losing his ability to act truly independently, or do things because he wants to, and is having a harder time not just filling the role he's been assigned. The excuses he used to give Demiurge for why he was doing a particular thing of no apparent or immediate value to himself or nazarick, have become his actual reasons for doing things. He no longer really takes his own independent time like he used to, Pandora's Actor is basically the only one actually acting as Momon now. Ainz goes out as himself, now. The man underneath the bones is slowly eroding and being suppressed. The Ainz at the start of the series would have been horrified if he had learned of the Happy Farm. The one now would understand it.
>>283316947Before her backstory was changed by Ainz she was supposed to have been a thot.
>>283316947YesAnd this is why Demiurge is so competent in the new world, compared to his polar opposite NPC, Shalltear. Demiurge was conceived of from the ground up, as an RP character. Every aspect of his build, and every piece of his backstory and profile, were written with an idea in mind. Demiurge is mechanically a clusterfuck, but is thematically the most consistent and cohesive character in the Tomb. Shalltear is the opposite. Her build is mechanically minmaxed to perfection. She is super optimized as an NPC combatant, capable of 1v1ing pretty much any actual player build. But, her build is thematically incoherent and nonsensical. The disparate elements that make up her build make no logical sense together, have no unifying identity, and this is compounded by her backstory being Peroroncino copying and pasting his favorite porn tags. She's almost completely incompetent as anything other than a combat beatstick and teleport jockey, and even then, her abilities don't actually synergize quite as well as they should, because of how impossible the build is. And she's extra useless, because there's nothing in the setting strong enough to justify her use as a beatstick, when even the Pleides can pretty much solo anything short of the PDL.
>>283317623>The disparate elements that make up her build make no logical sense together, have no unifying identityIs this the reason why she's both a vampire and a valkyrie?
>>283317359You also forgot that time he pretended to stop a demon lord, while attacking the criminal syndicate, kidnapped 100,000 random civilians and ordered them to be executed in the aftermath just to please he henchman.
>>283296959I agree, the show is destined for low iq retards who havw no taste. Thank you for proving my point
>>283316841Doesn't Demiurge can turn into a frog like demon if he wishes? Or there is supposed to be a more drastic transformation and the frog head is the most he can do?
>>283317360YeThe last line of her backstory WAS "Also she's a massive slut".Now it's "And she's in love with Momonga". Besides the obvious consequences, like the obsession with Ainz, not being able to ride the Bicorn, ect, there's another, deeper issue here. Tabula was... a weird guy, and wrote very intricate, convoluted, and contradictory backstories. That last line wasn't just a throwaway gag, it was the keystone of a jenga tower, that Ainz yanked out for a laugh.Changing that line completely destabilized the balance of her character, which has lead to her having conflicting priorities, which has lead to her going rogue, because she has to find creative solutions to these dilemmas. Star Wars as a series is mostly slop, but, the idea of how droids work, and their failsafe is good, and applies here. Droids have programming installed with laws and prerogatives that keep the droid mentally shackled to its orders. When a droid is faced with a problem that its programming is "stuck" by, it is briefly unshackled to solve the problem in a way that requires more creativity than a droid is usually allowed, before the shackling resumes, and the more such conflicts of programming a droid encounters, the more actual agency it gets, until it finally gets free of its programming forever. This is where Albedo is. Her backstory no longer makes sense, and Ainz' further decision to begin operating and acting under the alias Ainz, instead of Momonga, has added more fuel to the fire. Which has lead to her entire fucking black ops campaign to hunt down and kill any other guild players that may have also arrived, among other things.
I-I always go to google and copy paste the TM whenever I want to post it
>>283317933>Or there is supposed to be a more drastic transformation and the frog head is the most he can do?Exactly this. He's SUPPOSED to be able to turn into a big, fiery, final boss like demon, think a Balrog or a Bloodthirster or something. The big demon from the Holy Kingdom arc, that clubs people with Calca, is "supposed" to be the kind of thing he can turn into. But, he can't.The best he can do is the Aspect of the Devil partial transformations, meaning frog head, the claws, the long tail, ect, and these can only be done one at a time. They're not very good abilities that are more in the vein of giving spellcasters shitty access to some abilities of other classes, maybe niche utility here or there, but Demiurge uses them for mostly cosmetic reasons. And then, the actual big transformation that he can't do, he just summons the scary looking demon, turns invisible, hides, and pretends that's him.Which, again, he actually does in the Holy Kingdom arc.
>>283317359I see it more as him being passive. It would be one thing if he naturally gravitated toward Machiavellian tactics in an extremely uncertain world (and I think some of the things you mention actually do have a certain cold logic to them, like destroying that kingdom may end up saving human lives in the long run since he shows every other kingdom that he is now de facto ruler of the world without invading any of them), and where he has people and things he wants to protect, but more often than not he just bends to the machinations of his guardians (who aren't following any human reasoning at all but wouldn't mind genociding literally every living being in the world just for the lulz if they thought it pleased Ainz).>The excuses he used to give Demiurge for why he was doing a particular thing of no apparent or immediate value to himself or nazarick, have become his actual reasons for doing things. He no longer really takes his own independent time like he used to, Pandora's Actor is basically the only one actually acting as Momon now. Ainz goes out as himself, now. The man underneath the bones is slowly eroding and being suppressed. This too would be fine if it was actually shown to be an actual conflict within Ainz or if they explained his undead emotion stop passive skill, but there's just very rarely any insight into what Ainz is thinking.
>>283317820>>283317359I just don't get it, one moment its like the writer wanted to make a Reinhard type character in Ainz, the next he's just a bumbling retard again.
>>283317691Yes.She has a bunch of divine caster and paladin classes that logically she shouldn't have the ability to use or progress in, because she can't actually use the abilities to progress, and has a bunch of features that don't work, because she's an undead, but the net result is her having absurd survivability and sustain, the extra life, and all the other weird shit she has that makes her a menace. Also her clownsuit, which is just what peak, optimized stats with no appreciation for appearance looks like. I believe a historical example of this is "Outland Clown Syndrome", a phenomenon where whenever a new WoW expansion drops, everyone's previous, thematically consistent build gets replaced with random quest rewards and drops, and everyone looks like shit for a few weeks until people start getting thematically consistent armor sets near the ceiling of that expansion again. Or, maybe, Dark Souls, the person who wears whatever looks cool, vs the person who minmaxes as much protection as they can while staying under the dreaded fat roll. Shalltear's build doesn't really make consistent sense, so is cobbled together piecemeal in pursuit of specific traits, stat benchmarks, and features that make the build work.None of the progression or logic issues her build has matter, because she was made as a level 100 NPC in a game, and could thus afford to do things like take levels in literally useless or actively harmful prerequisites, that would leave her as a non-functional character at lower levels, because she's already level 100 and skips over that part. Peroroncino himself was absolutely a shitlord as well, for context, his build was flying, movement speed, and as much range as possible to cheese you from a zone away, and never ever ever actually see combat.
>>283318111I understand then. Sucks he cannot do what he's programmed to do, but he's doing well enough as the smart guy of the Tomb, so he has that.
>>283318227>if they explained his undead emotion stop passive skillI do agree with this. I think it's too subtle about what's actually happening. It's not just emotion suppressing, but every time it happens, the man beneath looses a bit of ground and a bit of independence, to the role he's supposed to be playing. This is pretty observable at a few points, where immediately after the suppressor, he makes a call in line with what expectations others have of him, but if you aren't specifically looking for it, these can slide by. This is also, I think, a part where the anime makes for excellent supplemental material, because a few of the times it happens in the novel are very understated, just being breaks in train of thought, while they're obviously animated in the show.It doesn't just suppress emotion, it suppresses humanity, individuality, and independence. It makes him act more like Momonga, guild master of Ainz Ooal Gown, instead of a human. And the intentional parallel between this, and the slow conditioning of corporate culture also needs to be made a bit more explicit. I can blame some of this on just being a Japanese work, I suspect this is leaning on more conventionally understood social mechanisms within Japanese culture, and especially Japanese corporate culture, that aren't as obvious to anyone outside of that. The fukkin. That expression. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down", something like that. The emotion suppressor is ALSO that social mechanism, just inside Ainz' head, and makes him conform to the role he holds instead of acting as he wishes. It's not entirely that, part of it is also the fact that Ainz is supposed to be unaware that it's happening, and it would be kind of awkward to have anyone else explain something going on within his psyche, so I can also understand why it isn't made more explicit. I think it would be worth some contrivance or clumsy narration to explain it better, but, I can understand it.
>>283318915The human reaction towards a new internal emotion limiter SHOULD have been to test it's limits, especially upon first contact with such a strange effect (it would not have been felt as a player in 3rd person perspective). Sure, all men are experts on being stoics and shit EXTERNALLY, but internally? That should have provoked the very human - THE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY YOU LITTLE BITCH type of response. Ains should have AT LEAST tried to break it or have his subordinates try to make him angry enough to override it. Because are you actually OP if some little mechanic can slap your ass down? I think NOT. There absolutely should have been a mini arc dedicated to sorting it's capabilities out, especially if it's a key plot point or theme. And maybe he'd lose, and be stuck under it's command the whole time. But we should hear his thoughts about that - getting angry it CAN suppress him, and then it does and he must move on. Instead it's just a little gimmick at the start and that was it. Oh look, he's stoic because plot point.
>>283296946Personally I think that any level of CG can be excused if the story and writing is good. Its why despite not being perfect Overlord is still a great show to me, one of the better isekai (maybe not saying much considering how much trash there is).
>>283319604Again, I agree, it is a bit out of character that for all the weird magical experiments Ainz has done, he hasn't touched this one. I know he's somewhat aware of it as an effect, even if not the details on it actually doing more to him than just making his emotions dampen. He knows about the emotion aspect, and really should be experimenting with it, which would lead to us being made more clearly aware of inconsistencies between his before and after thought processes. It could be that the lack of interest in it, is an enforced effect of it, but that's just conjecture and an excuse at that point, not an actual answer. A bigger deal needs to be made about it than is, because it's one of the most singularly important things in the show and its themes. And that a lot of people whip right past it is definitely a failure of the writing. Whatever difference in background cultural awareness of the mechanism there may be, it needed more attention on it than it has, you really shouldn't be this subtle with something this crucial to the narrative. Needing to find the secret lever to be able to understand the writing isn't a good way to write, but it DOES make sense that someone coming from a background of tabletop would make the mistake, where there's a bit more expectation of being able to interact with and guide the suspicions of your audience.
>>283319652I'd agree with this.I'd prefer none, but, I don't think Overlord is TOO egregious about it. Most of it is restricted to scenes where I can kind of understand the choice between this, or something pretty unimpressive to be actually animated, and weird gribblies and monsters whose designs are pretty complex to really portray well from all angles as a 2d animation. The black goats are probably the only time I was really annoyed by it, they could have actually done something really cool artistically for those, instead of cg models. Maybe the goblin army, but, that's more because the goblin army just looked like shit, than me being bothered by the missed opportunity of anything about it. That just needed an extra quality pass, those fukkin gobbos looked like a goddamn Digimon evolution from the show in the 90s.
>>283296985You can undelete your character if somone in your guild uses Ouroboros to make a request to the devs.
>>283296983I don't think Yggdrasil has alts, though. I think you have just the one character per account. Either he got a friend to make a character to do it, or this man is so unfathomably pissed at you, he will sacrifice his OWN 4+year account to destroy yours.
>>283317962>which has lead to her going rogueShe hasn't "gone rogue," she just cares about Momonga more than the guild or the other guild members.>>283318111Nowhere did it imply that he couldn't do a full transformation. Just because he was using his time-limited skill to summon Wrath and use that for Jaldabaoth doesn't mean that he can't take other forms. Same with Sebas, he's clearly going to be able to turn into his alternate dragon form, unless the author just forgot about it and ignore it in the last 2 volumes.
>>283318410>the next he's just a bumbling retard again. He's always a bumbling retard. The kingdom thing was Demiurge's idea and he went along with it because he wasn't smart enough to come up with an alternative. The tomb raider worker thing was also Demiurge's idea, and it even says that he disagrees with it but couldn't come up with an alternative, which is why he was angry but ultimately allowed them to intrude on the tomb. The whole world domination thing was because he was joking around and Demiurge took it literally, after which Ainz was too much of a coward to just come clean about it being a joke when they were flying in the sky looking at the new world. The most consistent thing about Overlord is that Momonga is a retard, but his lack of empathy and intelligence leads him to just accept whatever his minions decide.
>>283296960I'll never not be mad about how Log Horizon baited me. The premise and most of the first season is honestly fucking peak, and then it just turns into full retardation. Such a shame.
>>283320782it wasn't very databased.
>>283320595>Nowhere did it imply that he couldn't do a full transformationI don't have them on me now, we'll see if the thread is still up in a day or two, but I'm almost positive this is mentioned on the endpage of one of the novels on either Demiurge or Ulbert. I think. Could be somewhere else, but I feel like, 70% confidence in this.
>>283321281
>>283321281>>283321499Character cards for the guardians don't show any details besides classes/races.
>>283297065Not to mention, his paranoia has him either disguise himself or send out Pandora's Actor constantly.
>>283297072>It could have a very tepid ending where the Nazarick side just win anyway like normal, and the author is pretty fucking dull so its a real possibility. That is exactly what the planned ending is. The author dropped the series because he knows nobody will be happy with that. He made up a bunch of secret rules for himself which screwed the story out of being interesting.
>>283296939It's good but by isekai standards.
