It's Ghostory you pleb. It's Shiftale?Or it means Bakemonogatari [TL Note: bakemono = lit. "thing that changes", referring to often shapeshifting yokai (TL Note: yokai are Japanese folklore supernatural entities or spirits) and monogatari = story or tale]

The MTBB version does have that iirc. I actually think it's cool that some of the portmanteau titles have feasible translations into English that also overlap. Like Impostory for Nise.

So what was up with Numachi? Specifically how did she get the devil's leg? Was it Kaiki?
>>283329780Kaiki did the same magic bullshit she pulled on Kanbaru to transfer the leg from the one girl to her. A bigger question for me is why Nisio decided to give the girl who originally had the leg the name Rouka too. Seems like pointless confusion to have both Numachi Rouka and the girl she gets the leg from also be named Rouka.
>>283329768Kecque
>>283329818He did that shit over the phone? I guess I won't question it much.I think the names was just him trying to continue with the flower theme. Numachi's is written with the kanji for wax which I guess parallels the swamp or general inertia of high viscosity(?) while the other girl's is written with the kanji for tower, maybe a alluding to something akin to a flower trapped in a high place(?). Honestly I have no clue what he was going for, maybe some smarter anon that read the novels can shed some light.
>>283329780The Rainy Devil responds to wishes. It's a really, really powerful oddity, so it does a bunch of freaky shit you wouldn't expect it to. Kaiki just took advantage of the situation to set up the series of circumstances that would lead to Kanbaru losing her demon arm (which in turn would make her ineligible as Gaen's apprentice).
Rouka got preggo and fucked her leg up
>>283330107So you're saying Kaiki wasn't involved with the actual transfer outside of letting it happen after pulling some strings for the events to happen. Why was he surprised to meet Numachi when he was back in town doing the Nadeko stuff then? Timeline wise he should have known Rouka would eventually come close to Kanbaru if he was the one orchestrating the transfer some years ago. He also was surprised to learn Rouka was originally from this town as well.
>>283330228When he first met her, he kind of took note of her for future use and gave her some information that would keep her going. He didn't actually kick off the events of Hanamonogatari until he "ran into her" while dealing with Nadeko. That's presumably when he tipped her off about Kanbaru having one of the pieces she needed.
>>283330340But didn't the transfer happen shortly after their first meeting and not during Koimonogatari?
>>283326999I like to call them "Tales".
>>283330364No, it was far earlier. Their first meeting was just a casual phone number exchange. It was only after she called to ask about the devil leg that he really took notice of her. Presumably, at that point, Kaiki already understood it was going to jump to her and made it a point to explain the rainy devil to her a couple days later so she'd seek out the rest of it.
>>283330532It's still weird how he acts all surprised meeting her again in the town and going like "Oh I didn't expect to meet her here, didn't even know she lived nearby, hmm maybe it'll prove useful for when I want to meet Kanbaru in the future". Assuming his plan started when he let the transfer happen for Kanbaru's sake. Unless I'm getting it wrong and you're implying he thought about the plan during Koi and him having let the transfer happen being a lucky coincidence.
>>283330574Yes. He was "surprised". He had "no idea she lived around here".Kaiki is full of shit.
>>283330605I mean at this point unreliable narration can excuse pretty much anything. Not that I'm overly resistant to your theory, it's just that some things are unclear to me still. Maybe the novels do a better job at explaining the timeline of events and motivations. I think I heard Kaiki-Numachi is mentioned beyond Hana in the novels, maybe during a shorter story.
This is the end of their first meeting.
>>283330387Monstale.Get it? Get it? Because this shit is boring.
>>283330963From this it seems like: 1- Kaiki considered it a bit of his duty to collect the Devil's parts. This might or not be further expanded upon in Tsugimonogatari, no idea.2 - He can appear to be totally omniscient at times. Knowing Numachi is a ghost, knowing everyone's connections and motives which is weird. Then again, he's the narrator yadda yadda.3 - He passes on the duty of collecting the parts to Numachi with an unclear motive. It could be that he doesn't want to do it. It could be that he wanted Suruga to take it up after Numachi, since that's what she seems to want to do by the end of Hana.Of course collecting the parts like Numachi did into herself and collecting the parts like Kaiki or Suruga aimed to do are a bit different. There is also the unknown issue of what Izuko and Tooe wanted for Suruga and if Kaiki goes along or against their wishes in the end.
Nade KO Sengoku means Grenade child from sengoku
Anyway, I'm going to bed. This is the first Monogatari thread I've seen in days with actual discussion, so I'll leave this here. It seems more likely to last longer than my thread. It's a bunch of notes I took while reading through Tsugimonogatari. For those who wish to brave into spoilers, I THINK this is the first complete English "summary" of the book, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's not.https://pastes.io/monogatari-kaiki-meme-and-gaen-in-the-college-arc?Password is "niggers". If the sheer amount of notes looks daunting, trust me, that's how it felt reading the damn book. It just throws stuff at you CONSTANTLY. It's a serious contender for the best book in the series, but man was it emotionally exhausting.Notes may have a few details wrong, but I assure you they're better than the early spoiler summaries for Monster Season.
>>283331252Good luck studying for midterms lil bro
>>283331252Night night
>>283328963I would like them to slow down enough so that dense books get the treatment they deserve. Kizu cutting monologues might have been a design choice but they were in a hurry with some arcs like Kabuki and from what you said, Zoku. If something is dense then they should give it the episodes it deserves imo.
Tsugi alone is making me want to read all the novels so I can catch up. I don't know why but everything up until Family Season didn't particularly rush me to read it. It mostly had me feeling like "hey cool shit I'll catch up to someday". But learning Tsugi actually tackles some mysteries as a backstory has me mega intrigued. Need to avoid spoiling myself.

>>283352521It is kind of weird that you'll even hear about English people who spend a long time in Japan doing this still. I'm a fully native English speaker, and can understand how to turn that off to speak Japanese (although I don't really do it a lot). It is rather straight forward, sounds better, and makes it easier in some ways. I just mimick the way I hear the Japanese speak, like I'd switch for Spanish in highschool Spanish class. But I suppose a lot of people simply aren't good at doing this. It still bewilders me how some can hear a foreign name or word even be pronounced and not know how to do it still (of course excluding times when there is a special sound not available in their language).
>>283351760>>283351188"Moonfire" is such a chunni name, holy shit.
Sun and moon discussion reminded me of the one line where Shinobu ponders the moon in Nise. Saying something about perhaps treating it too harshly when it was always nice to her. I wonder if it was supposed to have some deeper meaning relating to the Araragis.
>>283352678Anon, I think you missed some very obvious subtext. Yes, Shinobu is relating the moon being good to her to her desire to help Tsukihi. She even points out the kanji for moon in her name.
>>283352620I guess it is at least some consolation that it goes both ways. Be glad that you can pronounce "phoenix" as phoe-nix instead of having to say "fenikkusu". You listen to enough English and you just develop a sense for it passively.

Does anyone have any insight on the naming of the swords 心渡 and 夢渡 ?More specifically why does one kill oddities while the other one restores them based on the names. One "crosses over" the heart, mind or spirit and the other one "crosses over" dreams. I don't have much of an explanation myself apart from vague stuff like:心渡 affecting the heart and mind as the mechanisms/organs that relate to how one perceives oddities. It can forcefully interact with such perceptions to forcefully sever concepts from consciousness so to speak. Then for 夢渡 you have the place where oddities can originate, in dreams, containing images, ideas and emotions that can give rise to "concepts". It forcefully severs these concepts from the mere consciousness to revive and create oddities.
>>283353218Yes.
>>283353407心 kinda means like the heart/core/idea/essence of something. It kills oddities because it cuts their very 心.夢 is also a poetic flourish for something that doesn't exist or only exists briefly, like how you forget dreams I guess. The sword is called that because it turns death into a 夢. The 渡 in both swords is Nisio making a stupid... I don't even think I'd call it a "joke". Just Nisio being stupid. 渡 because they're comically long swords. So they have a massive 刃渡り.
>>283326999>we can't have anything foreign or culturally different, it must ALL be localisedWhy are americlaps like this?

>>283349648What if Kanbaru recreated the rainy devil
>>283354188How do you mean? Currently the Rainy Devil is a mummy of a previous oddity that Tooe killed. That is assuming its corpse parts weren't all destoyed in some later novel I haven't read.Kanbaru doesn't seem as much of a genius as her mother to manifest her own RD, though I think it was mentioned that the Gaen family's expertise with the supernatural is oddity creation.
>>283354274Ok what if Numachi had won and had recreated the devil?
>>283354322Idk Monogatati logic doesn't work like a shonen manga. You have to analyze the characters and what they represent to even begin to speculate on how things interact with each other.Originally the Rainy Devil was Tooe's version of Oshino Ougi. Well, Ougi is the cheap imitation in a way. Just as Araragi is hard on himself and towards others subconsciously, Tooe seems to have had a similar issue with her extreme self discipline worldview manifesting itself into the Devil. In her case she didn't choose to embrace or celebrate that part of herself moving forward, but instead changed completely as a person (presumably after marriage) symbolically exterminating the oddity. With Numachi you just have a ghost oddity that is defined as a misfortune-collector trying to gather the parts of a dead oddity for the purpose of containing it. In that sense maybe nothing would happen and the dead oddity would be locked away in Numachi. Kanbaru said that Numachi had little use for wishes and you can kind of see that being true with how big of a ball of negativity she is.

>>283367741But is that enough to justify the popularity of this work? And more importantly, the time i would spend watching this if i decided to do it?

>>283368083It is never going to be finished anon. It is too profitable and beloved. It pretty much single handedly guides multiple anime genres such as moe, ecchi, paranormal, and other otaku stuff. Many tropes originate from it. As for watch order, it isn't that weird. You are probably more confused by the plot jumping back and forth in time. Which works out well and also is honestly fun because it means nothing is truly off the table. If you really love Araragi's highschool years for instance, you never know when Nisio could decide to return to them.
>>283367818How could any of us know how much your time is worth? It's my favorite anime, i go desert island i choose this one because i derive endless enjoyment from its cinematographic tricks and rhythms, sound design, narrative themes and plots, witty dialogues, the minutia of every single character's voice acting (all-stars picked for the show in which characters can hold a 20minute long conversation) and of course the tasteful erotic scenes. We are miles away from some common panty shot fest. The ambiguity of the setting, the texture of this realistic fantasy, the layers of wordplay: i have timed my reactions and any episode activates my neurons and pulls me in within 1:30 minutes.I'm still not sure what you'd like to see in my post? It's gud animu? It's rude asking others to dance for entertainment as if you were a pacha ready to grace a show with your presence. I think you shouldn't watch it because too many people watch this anime. It should belong to me. Stop watching it.
>>283368058Kaiki presumably breaks out the hacksaw, but he does it off-screen so they don't go into much detail about it.>>283367922The body parts are mostly in preservation jars and coolers and such whenever they're on-screen. The exception being the feet, which are cleanly taxidermy'd.And yes, she's naked for the entire scene, despite wearing a dress on the cover.
>>283368224It really is hard to describe how engaging Monogatari is and how it does nearly everything better. It just does though.
>>283367818>>283368083>please read my mind and tell me if I'll like this anime
>>283368654I can and can tell that he will like it
>>283368382Not everything. Most of the time the image is not even animated but the 2D cameraman moves the shots in crazy ways and succeeds at imparting action to the scenes which is otherwise just not there. Get fooled by the movie magic. The books aren't perfectly adapted either. Understanding of japanese is too strongly recommended and too much is lost in translation.I have stockholm's for the CG backgrounds, they were an intelligent stylish decision but they do be jarring at first. Heavy referential humor might not be in vogue in 2025, narrative structure copied from the Haruhi anime.Reminder for the Hidamarifriends than Hanamono depicts Yuno sex-assaulting Landlady.
>>283365231Senjougahara is great but she's unironically handicapped because she is the winner.
>>283368926I personally never found the cgi backgrounds that off-putting. But maybe that is because I'm a zoomer who grew up with shows that had some really scuffed cgi in them.
>>283369015In monogatari there's usually more going on than just showing shitty cgi backgrounds
>>283368976It would be interesting to see how things would be different if she was still doing the whole yandere thing throughout more of the series. I imagine something like Nadeko snaking out may be more directly her fault (although I still think Shinobu would be what would push Nadeko over the edge). I could also imagine funny gags with her finding him with the loli trio or even Gaen/Kagenui. Hitagi End could've been made more meaningful for Hitagi, showing the deepness of her love. Rendezvous could be more interesting by potentially having her and Araragi pair there.
>>283368654I'm just asking because it looks like one of those shitty harem LN adaptations but with higher budget, the only thing i know about it is that infamous toohtbrush scene and some backgrounds looking like something straight out of Utena. I'm interested but at the same time i have the feeling that is going to be a clusterfuck of "deconstructing" anime cliches but not really while having convoluted light speed dialogue just to look smart a la Tatami Galaxy.
>>283368976Redditgahara
>>283369171Deconstructing is just a buzzword that is often erroneously applied to things by psueds. Monogatari is different and odd, but it never feels pretentious. It is, in fact, quite honest as far as media goes. It just does what is entertaining. As for dialogue, it isn't that hard to understand. If you do miss it, while you'd miss out on a piece, there is more still. Any given scene is layered with so many different gags and details. Both from the author and from additional stuff the studio adds. It is pretty much impossible you won't be picking up on something.
Humiliating Shinobu by making her snowball my load every day
>>283369171Bakemonogatari was something the author wrote for fun between his other novels and didn't even intend to release publicly. It's very much unfiltered "This is what the Nisio thinks is funny/thought provoking" without any real worrying about whether the audience would like it. If you share his tastes, you'll like it. If you don't, you won't.
>>283369347The jokes on you, she has a fetish for humiliation. She wouldn't put up with being a loli slave and wearing no panties if she didn't.
>>283369015The backgrounds were so stylized because still images was all they could afford if they wanted to maintain high bursts of animation. Didn't stop anyone from endlessly complaining about the nonsense of these backgrounds. Today they are quaint and their graphic design can be appreciated, 15 years ago they were lazy shit, copypasted in blender and not anime.>>283369060 They keep the focus solely on the speaking characters and remove distractions. Just surrealist visuals in unison with the surrealist dialogue and plot while saving budget at the same time. Mistakes into miracles, bugs are features, deliver on time using this one genius trick.
>>283369171It has fun with genre cliches but it's far too tongue in cheek to ever take itself super seriously. Like it's hard to consider it snobbish in any way with the amount of tits and ass waved in the audience's face, and that's probably what the animators intended with the fanservice as well, to defuse the pretentiousness through making the show abrasively crass to the pretentious audience.
>>283369283Araragi's a deconstructed hero. He's a monster and he hides it well. He declaws his cats and lies about it online, is that our guy Gary Harem? No he was a modern young man neurotic and unaccountable in a deliberate calculating way.
>>283370230I do agree with this in a way. There are interesting layers with Araragi with what he hides from who. Captures the feeling of helping out someone and winning their praises and then fapping to lolis later that day in private.
>>283369914I wonder how many noticed these bottles were cgi even when trying to stare right at them.
>>283369978It tends to do a show or a game a lot of good for it to have one really abrasive aspect because that one aspect tends to keep away all the right people.
>>283372004On the other hand, it often does the opposite and draws in people who ONLY like the show for that aspect. Monogatari, for example, has a ton of retards who come for the toothbrush scene and only really care about the dirty humor. Which is probably better than normalfags, but still obnoxious.
My favorite part of Monogatari is the dirty humor.
Say something BOLD about Hachikuji
>>283373067I don't want to smell her hair. I don't want to stroke her stomach. I don't want to hug her. I don't want to marry her and spend the rest of our lives together. I'm not a lolicon, only a lolicon would want that.
>>283373430Well, hang on, hugging is fine.
>>283369171It comes off as very pretentious if you're looking at the individual pieces and not the whole. In reality, it's the type of series where they'll gloss over an important plot point with two lines of dialog, then spend 10 minutes talking about the author's shower thoughts because that's what he was more interested in writing about that day. Or constantly make bad puns during dramatic scenes because the author felt the puns were more important than the plot. Or a character who isn't in the book otherwise will randomly appear for one chapter because he wasn't really sure what to write next.Monogatari looks like it has pretense, but it has none. The author very much keeps his feet on the ground at all times, never forgetting that it's just something he writes for fun. Hell, in a later book he basically goes "actually, this story was supposed to be a two-parter, but I finished it in one book. I had to put something in the second book, so I decided to write a breather story. Here's 200 pages of Nadeko running around on a desert island naked."
>>283373603>Here's 200 pages of Nadeko running around on a desert island naked.Beautiful, I love Nisio and can't wait for Shaft to adapt this in particular.

>>283374381It is kind of sad seeing how happy and complete she would've grown up to be. Especially considering that she ended up surviving a deadly apocalypse while being very close to the center of it. The car took it all away from her though.
>>283326999I always thought that people were exaggerating when they said that you NEED to understand Japanese to fully enjoy Monogatari but after learning Japanese Hey fuck this language, somehow 3 different words can have the same meaning and some words can mean three different sentences
>>283374845Are those kanji cards? I always thought the best method to learn Japanese past simple knowledge of kana and grammer would be to use cards to learn the useful kanji. Then read progressively harder manga, learning words along the way.
>>283374845I don't think this is true for the anime. It helps being familiar enough with Japanese to understand some Kanji puns if they get explained but weird old school references are definitely harder to get.If we are talking about the novels though then yeah, you kinda need Japanese to fully appreciate those because they do kick it up a notch even if in just sheer volume.
