Not counting Pokémon and Monster Hunter, the only RPG to outsell FFVII in Japan is apparently DQ9. DQ8 seems to be tied with it. I'm actually pretty surprised. I thought DQ would be much higher in general. FFVII and DQ8 are the two best-selling, non-handheld RPG's. Accounting for physical sales only, at least.

Advent Children Complete was pretty good. There were other Final Fantasy movies too.
Also, going from a video game medium to an anime or live action medium, you're losing degrees of freedom, it's a downgrade, which is why adaptations of video games are so extremely rarely good at all.
