How do you cope with the fact that anime is mainstream now? Something you were hated for in your youth is celebrated now?
>>283343646I am happy that the young generation is getting into anime. It's better, more enriching entertainment than whatever is on Netflix.
People realized most anime are just teenage or older cartoons, the kid shit has stayed mostly western. Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man got kinda popular with almost zero marketing in my country. Anime oldfags from the 90s and 00s hate the new fans though.
>now
>>283343646>How do you cope with the fact that anime is mainstream now?By accepting that trends follow a predictable cycle of rise, peak popularity and eventual decline. People typically follow trends and move on to the next popular thing as soon as the old one isn't trendy anymore.
>>283343722Netflix is one of the reasons anime is mainstream, anon.
>>283343722Shonen* Anime got popular. Show them a seasonal like Mirai Nikki or Accel World from the early 2010s or even just mecha and you'll still get weird looks.
>>283343646The fact we overcome the days when liking anime could get you bullied to death, is making me feel rather old. Which at the same time reminds me of my mortality and that makes me feel like shit
>>283344004Netflix is the third wheelAnime is the easiest media to pirate, easier than music.
Don't care, will still hide my powerlevel at all costs to avoid association with retarded trend chasing normalfags
Anime has been popular since Sailor Moon, Pokemon & Dragon Ball Z came to the west newfag.
>>283343646Anime was mainstream before you were born tho
It's certainly good i no longer need to keep acting like gatekeping dosen't make me feel like a bad person so i like it

>>283343646It's strange especially when some average-at-best manga I read 3-4 years ago suddenly gets an anime and everyone talks about it even though it shit the bed in the manga
>>283343646By watching more obscure anime of course.
>>283343646>barking in theatersAnd these people(?) call themselves human?
>>283343646>Something you were hated for in your youthAt most people thought it was weird or had no idea what it was beyond "that dragon ball z stuff"
>>283344567Tbf, it’s par for the course for anime fans to embarrass themselves in theaters.
>>283343646>Something you were hated for in your youth is celebrated now?"hated" is a strong wordeverybody knew about dbz and naruto nut not about all the other degenerate otaku weeb cultures stuff and that's what got weebs looked down upon
>>283343646>>283344567Welcome to the social media generation, where parents are too busy watching slop online to raise their children so they just give them a phone and a laptop to watch ebin memes and play Minecraft all day.

>>283344567I went to watch the Bocchi movie and some autist next to me was muttering throughout the movieI rarely bother going to see anime movies in the cinema now because they have the worst audience, even worse than star wars and capeshit
I went alone on release and 11 other people where in there and it was a normal movie experience

>>283344964>and play Minecraft all dayNah, gtfo, I used to play Minecraft all day for most days a month for over half a decade. I can tell you for a fact that this has nothing to do with the revolutionary genius of a meta-game that is Minecraft.>picrel: the closest approximation to a Minecraft manga/anime
>>283343646Nipples are not yet accepted.
>>283343646I watch older anime and pray the new "fans" move on to something else. Anime becoming mainstream is not good. The standards will plummet and expect to see more shows that only serve the biggest common denominator and nothing else. Expect there to be censorship of anything remotely considered offensive or edgy according to the modern mob. Overall its a bad thing and this has been the case for awhile now.
>>283343646Now more than ever I think we all can agree that bullying was, is and will always be a good thing.

>>283343646>>283344567>>283344728>>283344964>>283345183I've been lucky enough that whenever I saw an anime movie in theaters nobody behaved autistically. Only exception might have been DBZ Battle of Gods. The loudest people got during the Chainsaw Man Movie was when everyone laughed at Denji riding Beam. What have been you guy's experience?
>>283343646I'm honestly kinda jealous of Zoomers cause for their generation it seems like you can be normal and like anime without being viewed as a weird faggot for it. I was born in 92, and only the most autistic, obnoxious retards in my high school were open about liking it. I hid my power level for all of high school because I didn't want to get lumped in with them.
I never really had an issue with liking it as a kid. A lot of people around me did. It did seem to go out of style after around middle school though. But I never experience bullying or anything because of it. I'm hoping to see the new Madoka movie in theatres depending on the timeline of its release. Do anime movies release in theatres overseas before the Japanese bluray is available typically?
Not counting children's anime, anime's been mainstream in the Anglosphere since the early 2000sAnd it's been mainstream since the 70s literally everywhere else lmao, fucking Leiji Matsumoto was knighted in France, and the Middle East have been building giant Go Nagai mecha statues for decades
>>283343646>Something you were hated for in your youthNever happened unless you mean the 'While you were partying I studied the blade' turbospergs who deserved to be bullied and still are.
All im saying is that if chainsaw man was made in the 90s, it would have 300 episodes by now.
I always feel like I live in an alternate universe because everybody tells you that anime was looked down upon as weird in the 2000s, but in my high school circa 2008ish, the girl in front of me was drawing fucking Magic Knight Rayearth fanart, one of the most charismatic guys in my classroom was openly a fan of shit like Rosario Vampire, my best friend in the same class was already starting to become a mecha nerd, and we even had like 2 Gaia fujo fat girls who wouldn't shut the fuck up about Haruhi and Code Geass and random shoujo like Fruits Basket and shit.People act like anime in the 2000s was some top secret esoteric nerd cult but it was the go-to hobby for teenagers with nothing else in their lives. Either that or I was incredibly lucky.

>>283349601>What have been you guy's experience?I watched End of Evangelion a few years ago. Everyone mostly behaved themselves apart from the guy a few seats away from me who shrieked "she's a child!" when Gendo touched Rei's boob near the end.
>>283343646Holy shit are Redditors still on their barking bullshit, I'm going to see it in a couple days I hope I don't have to deal with that shit.
>>283344567Wait until you find out what else "they" do in anime movie theaters.
>>283343967>>283350778I have a vivid highschool memory of being at my locker, mostly ignoring the 2 normie girls gossiping next to me until one of them started talking about a little girl who got killed by wolves and brought back to life and suddenly clued into the fact they were talking about Inuyasha.13 years old and those bitches were already fantasizing about being groomed by Sesshomaru.
>>283350778This. Maybe it was because I went to a pretty small high school (around 250 kids total across 4 grades) but it felt like basically everyone was watching DBZ, Trigun, FMA, Gundam and whatever else was big on Toonami or Adult Swim at the time. Even some of the more popular girls were watching Inuyasha. It wasn’t always the deepest cuts but it also never felt like anyone gave a shit whether you did or didn’t watch anime
>>283343646I don't really care about anime being popular but the popularity of Japan overall is annoying. I seethe seeing every girl go to Japan acting like they've discovered some secret hidden gem travel spot.

>>283344834I remember first hand somebody getting bullied for liking Naruto
>>283343646I absolutely hate it. I have felt out of place with being interested in anime since the late 2000s. As someone who started watching it in the early 90s. I have nothing in common with anime fans of the current generation or even the last generation. Me and my girlfriend only find middle ground with anime from the 2000s as she hates everything that I like from the 80s and 90s. Then I find it hard to get into anime from the 2010s even though there are stuff I did find I liked such as Mirai Nikki, Steins;Gate, Madoka, Shinmai no Testament, Oreimo, Kiss X Sis, Yosuga no Sora, and Psycho Pass among a few to name. I thought Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online was overrated as hell and didn't deserve the attention that both of those series ended up gravitating around them. I feel the same way about video games as well. Now days everyone calls themselves a gamer just as well as "an anime fan". Not sure if people really refer to themselves in a way as Otaku as people did back in the day anymore. Forum culture is dead and even here on /a/ is a lot different from when I first started coming here back in 2004. However, there's always been obsessive fads along the way. For example I remember when Azumanga Daioh was the hottest shit and you were pratically forced to watch it if you wanted to "keep up". That's around the time I started to feel a bit different with my hobbies and interests. Even though I did get caught up in the "memes" back then and even contributed random stuff on /f/ and other websites posting flash regarding it and have stuff such as waka laka for osaka still saved to this day. Including the AMV fun and early stuff that made it's way to the AMV Hell videos back in the day. I just miss when things felt more authentic and real with fandoms instead of everyone "forcing" themselves to be interested for social media cred. Just like everything though, EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING was better before social media plagued itself everywhere.

>>283350778>>283350939In the same way that some kids grow up always moving around and other kids grow up in the same town forever, you guys had different experiences than other people who were into anime/manga.I myself when I went to middle school and even in high school I ran into like a small number of people (5 or so) who were into anime/manga, and these were pretty big schools too. For 99% of the students I saw, the only animated shows they talked about and watched were The Simpsons, South Park, and so on.

Despite the fact that I hate gatarifags and don't really care for gatari as a whole, it is the current best filter/litmus test/whatever for checking whether whoever you're conversing with is a normal. The day normals adapt gatari is the day I accept anime has truly gone mainstream.
>>283344567I watched this movie yesterday - there were maybe 20 people in the theater at most, and everyone behaved properly. No one seemed to care about the plot twists, probably because they were all mangafags.

>>283343646I cope by being an Anime hipster and only watching obscure Animes that the normie weebs have never heard of. Also it tends to be better than the popular Anime.
>>283343646Anime is shit now. That's been the case since the 2000s, but it got really fucking bad in the past decade. Also, what kind of faggot were you to get bullied for liking anime? Did you make it your entire personality or something? Did you only watch gay anime?Back in the 90s, anime was seen as alternative and underground, and was known as weird Japanese cartoons for adults with excessive amounts of sex and violence.
>>283354536>Also, what kind of faggot were you to get bullied for liking anime? Did you make it your entire personality or something? Did you only watch gay anime? I got into anime about 10 years ago, and back then, the only people watching it as a teen were usually weird, overweight, or socially awkward kids who got bullied or looked down on. Honestly, I feel like that hasn’t changed much today.
If you were hated for liking anime there was probably something else wrong with you that made you a targetI knew a guy in middle school that was made fun of for reading manga in class but he was already a weirdo for having a huge mohawk and those weird goth pants. I told those kids to fuck off and he started dressing normal and while I hung out with him he was never bullied again
