A lot of the show is spent hyping up Goku's eventual arrival while other characters struggle to survive. >Saiyan SagaThe gang trains for like a year, the Saiyans show up, and they proceed to get blown the fuck out and only manage to beat the Saibamen. They could have at least given them a team effort win over Nappa or something. Then Goku shows up late to the party and beats Nappa in record time. >NamekPlenty of attention is given to Goku's in-flight training, he shows up and cleans up a few problems before getting severely injured during the conflict with Ginyu, and then the back half has the cast hoping and praying Goku will recover and become strong enough to defeat Freeza when their combined efforts weren't enough. However, the arc as a whole is good at distributing attention to the other characters even if Goku steals the show in the end.>Androids and Cell One of the main conflicts of the early arc is how Goku is going to die and he needs his future meds to survive and help defeat the androids. More focus on his training to defeat Cell and Gohan sort of takes up the protagonist role near the end. There's a good passing of the torch moment that unfortunately does not carry well into the Buu Saga. Speaking of>Buu SagaGoku comes back from the dead again, he has a new powerup, Vegeta's entire character is centered around his inferiority complex toward Goku, Gohan ends up fumbling the whole situation and his dad ends up having to pick it up.

This is because Toriyama got off making everyone wait for Goku after the saiyan arc.In that one, at the very least, it was used for tension and stakes which it succeeded in pretty well, however once you do it once it becomes annoying.Like, even in the Cell arc where Goku DOESN'T beat the main villain, the character go on and on about how they should wait for Goku before doing anything.

Namek and the first half of the Androids saga is the most "somebody other than Goku actually matters" arc of the whole series, and even then 90% of that was just Vegeta cleaning house. Gohan got handed a pity W against Cell after being totally irrelevant for the majority of the saga, but that's it.

It's better to put side characters in non-combat roles were they don't become outclassed. Bulma has remained prominent simply because she fulfills a niche no one else can as the tech wizard.
