The original plans for the final saga were probably very different given how much time Tabata was willing to waste on the samurai stuff, but then his real life problems overwhelmed him and he ended up having to speedrun through things. That's why the final saga is so much shorter than the Spade saga and the elf saga even though the finale is usually the longest one. This is also why many elements are either rushed, like the earth spirit showing up out of nowhere, or omitted entirely, like the dwarfs. The move to a different magazine, the infrequent publication schedule and the frankly sloppy writing has negatively impacted the popularity of the series, so it's not clear if Tabata could pull a fakeout ending and continue the story even if he wanted to.At this point the best case scenario is that Tabata gives the anime some extra material, especially when it's time to adapt the final arc. It would even be possible the have another movie set after the Spade arc to maybe introduce the earth spirit more naturally while covering some of the missing elements alongside it. And of course once BC is finally done Tabata has the opportunity to start another series, perhaps on a monthly schedule that's better for his health. I just hope he sticks to fantasy rather than scifi or something. In theory he could even repurpose things like the dwarfs for that story.
Finding out that Black Clover had a whole ass war arc/final bad guy fight where absolutely nothing happens as a result is so funny and makes me feel vindicated.I'm glad I never got into it out of my hatred for shounenshit, and I only read good manga. Like classic shoujo.

And there's countless of other examples of manga with rushed or outright bad endings. At least Tabata seems to be marking the checklist to address some of the hanging plot threads (Leo return and Fuego Spirit Dive being a big one here).
