It's just Protagonist's Faction (Gryffindor the brave strong morally correct good guys favored by the principal) and the Bad Guys (Slytherin the bloodline obsessed nobles who both envy and hate the protagonist and whom virtually all the antagonists are nearly connected to via the death eaters and Malfoy but for some reason nobody does anything about this because then the protagonist wouldn't get to show off) That said I have seen attempts at houses in academy slop, most commonly is with "factions" who don't actually behave like political factions whatsoever but like Harry Potter houses with secret club houses and school rivalries and sports competitions and shit, the "Commoner Faction" are the hufflepuffs who are largely irrelevant but end up liking the MC and being his errand boys for doing basic kindness, the "Noble Faction" is almost always corrupt evil Slytherin standins, the "Royal Faction" is usually being suppressed by the nobles and is basically Gryffindor where they believe in genuine noblesse oblige and they'll even give a fancy sword to the MC like harry got the sword of Gryffindor, then if there is a fourth faction it'll be a handwaved "Mage Tower" who are basically Ravenclaw who don't care about politics and just want to research so obviously the MC shows off his special skills and earns their interest and support.If you think about it like this a lot of academy slop basically reads like Harry Potter fanfic where the mc goes around getting the support of all the houses and characters using his "knowledge of the original work", which isn't surprising since there's literally tens of millions of shitty Harry Potter fanfics out there on the internet and when publishing stuff it's common for people to file the serial numbers off fanfic (this is also how 50 shades of gray got published, it's twilight fanfiction with the vampire plot cut out)
