Can good art alone carry a manga?
Only if you turn off your brain
>>283441490No.
>>283441490No. If you're gonna try you could do much better than MHA, the art is definitely good though, except for the snouts.
>>283441490>cross-hatchings is le good art!read more manga tourist
as a visual art form the visuals can be really important for the way the story is told, give personality and set the tone, and add a whole tone of other things to the story. but also, books and light novels don't have any pictures. a story can be told without pictures, and some things have arguably terrible art (one punch man web comic) but are so engaging in their stories that they are still successful. just relying on good art doesn't make a good story, because if it's just told as a story with words it has nothing. like juujika no rokunin, or solo levelling.
>>283441490Nope, but good art can raise a good manga to the heights of excellence.Touge Oni is a great example of this.
>>283441490You answered your own question with that pic
>>283441490No Air gear has god tier art because of Oh! Great but a bat shit insane story. It honestly starts falling apart after volume 12 when shit goes off the rails with things like Obama for example replacing Emily.
>>283441719God tier manga (no pun intended).
>>283442617Having never read Air Gear, you make it sound really entertaining. I'm guessing the ridiculousness is bad because he made it dull?
>>283442761I don't find Air gear dull at all it's incredibly fun manga but you have to be prepared for Oh! Great writing style. He'll take a concept like punk ass kids getting into skate battles and crank it to 100%. It's still worth a read especially if you're an art fag or wanna see how insane it can get. This is from a training arc with a naked cult
>>283441490No. People don't read manga because of art, they read because of the story being told. Otherwise they would just be looking at pretty pictures.
>>283442761Certified hood classichttps://youtu.be/klFVxGAacz0?list=RDklFVxGAacz0
>>283443144Alright i'm sold.
>>283441490Yes.
>>283441490no. they all look like dolphins
I think no manga better depicts the idea of style over substance than Bastard!!
>>283441490yes
Only if it has hot girls.
>>283441490Good art alone can't carry a manga, but bad art alone can kill one.
>>283441616But I like cross hatching...
>>283441490>good art care to post an example?
>>283441490No. Art is like a vital organ. A fantastic set of lungs won't live on their own, but everyone will be healthier if they have them.
>>283448025
>>283441490Didn't work for OPM
>>283441490Yes. If I only cared about art I would look at pretty pictures, sure. But if I only cared about writing I would be at /lit/ not /a/. Between the 2, art is way more important than writing for a visual media. Something like Dragon Ball or Sakamoto Days can have the most simple plot in the world with the most simple characters and still be worth reading for the art alone. Meanwhile I think Demon Slayer has slightly better writing than the average shonen, yet no one cared until Ufotable made it pretty.
>>283441490Hell no.
MHA has the worst character designs ever conceived by a human being
>>283441490This sucks.
>>283441490How long of a manga are we talking about? Something short? Sure. Something that goes on for dozens of volumes where nothing of interest fucking happens? no.
>>283448422There are a lot of people (not many, but a. lot) who follow manga mostly for the art with the story as an afterthought.
>>283448693Agreed. >>283441490Hey OP, this really isn't that impressive.
>>283441490Not in Japan, they don't seem to care that muchIt does matter more to westerners, but then again they seem to be interested in manga/anime for more aesthetic reasons in generalI mean Witch Hat Atelier is relatively popular manga in America but not in Japan. Berserk too, it's probably more popular internationally than in it's home country, which is rare
>>283449087Funny, I get the opposite impression from westerners.
>>283448422I liked DS before the anime
>>283448422I completely agree with this some anime adaptations can elevate a manga drastically for me to care like Demon Slayer or Ruri rocks. I recently started reading Rosario vampire and the story is incredibly simple but the art is incredible that elevates the manga, Wandance is the opposite of this. The anime of Wandance currently has terrible animations but the writing was good. I checked out the manga out shines the anime in every way.
>>283441490yesbut good art doesn't just mean a lot of detail in the illustrations or good draftsmanship
>>283444156Bastard!! had substance in the sense that it was an unabashed parody of shonen manga and played it extremely straight while also having a cool setting, in some ways it was a proto Gintama, in another it was a honest to god love letter to high fantasy, metal and videogames. You don't need to be 4deep8u to have substance, you just need to know what you want to do with your work and stick to the plan, and possibly not kill yourself by overwork because FUCKING EPIC TWO PAGES SPREADS EVERY THREE PAGES HOLY SHIT I LOVE DRAWING MANGA LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE.
>>283441490I don't think good art is merely detailed and technically proficient art, but effective art. This is very noticeable in old manga (and western comics too). Rather than killing themselves going for realism and the most 3D looking drawing they can, they just try to tell a story with pictures and get as much impact as possible as efficiently as possible. Novel concept for sequential art huh? Though sometimes that detail is absolutely necessary to convey something properly or give it the proper impact. Other times something like pic related is better and takes a fraction of the time to produce.
>>283441490pic unrelated. you should've added frieren or something there, retarded op
>>283441490No, OPM is proof of that.
>>283447991Just a flesh wound.
>>283450350But Frieren's artwork is overall weak. The character art generally looks fine but the backgrounds are dreadful and devoid of personality.
>>283441490Yes because if it has enough mainstream appeal people will just think that it is good and better then most things. Its sort of like the halo effect but with manga instead of real people.
>>283441490Nope. Certainly doesn't work for anime either
>>283450368>the manga that nobody heard or talked about till Murata pulled One out of obscurity
>>283441490Yes
>>283441490Bnha had so much lore Hori could have done with as he had ideas beyond just good art but he was a bitch to the axe
>>283450661The writing was really cute though, it wasn't just the /fa/ art that was good
>>283447967what about One?
>>283450714Before the writing ever got a translation just the dynamic art was enough to convey all. It works wordlessly, universally.
>>283443341not true at all, everyone would be reading novels if it was just the story that mattered
>>283450651Yeah and Murata has spent the last several years killing it with redraws and rewrites. Dude's a great artist but an awful storyteller.
>>283450673he literally told whatever he wanted and unnecessarily more that could've been skipped
All of this is irrelevant when the true measure of success of a manga's success is having a decent anime adaptation.
>>283450673>ideas beyond just good artPic unrelated?
>>283450779he didn't, he skipped too much lore in the early days confessing he had his eyes on the numbers and when he finally had freedomthey gave him a bad rookie editor who ruined the flow of the manga for explosive ratings every week so each chapter ends with a kabagn that was not the author's style- bro literally wanted the moolah from fujosisters at the end so he could buy more all might statues and marvel merch
>>283450817>condensed the parasitic twin AFO's rise as a villain story into ofa brocest monologue focusing only on the offscreen moment he kills the ofas Sure its unrelated
>>283450728He recently updated a new chapter for OPM webcomic. His other series are also quite good.
if your Jump has other interesting stories on the side, yes. If its kuso era like now, no.
>>283449449Based and reasonpilled.
>>283449449Two-page spreads are so overrated its unreal
>>283447991shark teeth don't work outside of comedy
>>283441490no.
>>283451369Anon, that page is a punchline from a comedy manga.
>>283443341What about korean manga fans
>>283451785>korean manga>mangaYou should definitely try to jump off a building for once.
No, the art might be enjoyable but the story remains the same
>>283448422Now you remember DS outsold SD pre anime, which has negative discussion here.
>>283441490Seemed to work for Kubo
>>283451743You can't call a series comedy just because it's super fucking retarded
>>283441490Pic unrelated I'm sure
>>283441616It shows line quality. Hori is really good at drawing
>>283448620Shiggy looks great, when he has his negative space hair its great looking. Really its only Deku who has the bad design>>283442617I heard he just traced over 3d renders, so all those crazy splashes are just 3d things he made up in 3d studio max or whatever. It kind of makes sense given how technically correct in linework and perspective they are.Tenjo Tenge also went off the rails and i always wondered if they coincided and he lost his mind at the same point
>>283448324That's a screenshot of their 3d model
>>283444156Bastard had a story or at least a clearer vision compared to other art-only manga such as anything ohGreat, or shokugeki no soma, or whatever Murata is doing to OPM.Too bad it went to shit since Hagi got demotivated and skipped a good chunk of story and then after the newer story made no sense he tried to go back to the skipped segment but then just said fuck it and stopped drawing.
>>283452879>>283449449The problem I have with Bastard is that Hagi should ever have someone that writes for him because he clearly has no clue of how to structurate a story arc or just give up manga entirely and become a videogame art director since he's only really talented at drawing pretty images
>>283441490yes, OPM
>>283450682yep, Blame is definition of that
>>283441490No. A story has to be interesting. It doesn't need to be good, but if its bad, the art cannot mask that. See:>One Punch Man>Sakamoto Days
>>283441490>Can good art alone carry a manga?only if it's short and not too retarded
>>283442761Air Gear is an example of great(probably even greatest) potential ruined by extremely poor writing. It has everything: unique setting, memorable characters, art by one of the best mangakas ever but it doesn't have a story at all. It ends up being a bunch of cool manga panels compilation.
Good art alone can't even carry the visuals. You need paneling and movement flow too.
>>283452879>Too bad it went to shit since Hagi got demotivated and skipped a good chunk of storyThat isn't what happened by the way. Bastard!! moved from Weekly Jump to a Seasonal Jump magazine for the Crime & Punishment arc which was only published quarterly. At some point Jump decided to shut that imprint down and Hagi was never told about it, after I think maybe a year or something of no one coming to pick up manuscripts he contacted Shueisha about it and they told him the magzine he was in was done, so he had to switch to weekly Jump (with an irregular schedule obviously) for a brief period before moving to Ultra Jump and then the infinite hiatus started. Pic related was the very last page of Bastard!! that appeared in weekly Jump before it moved to UJ. The original rumour was that he lost manuscripts in a studio flood but it seems that is made up. I'd argue that abandoning him without telling him is probably worse though.
>>283441490absolutely not. Hero Academia proves that good art isn't even half what you need for a successful manga. Hori had his better ideas scrapped by the editors before he could even implement them (Deku being Japanese Batman to work alongside Japanese Superman/All Might), which did put the manga on a rough start and unfortunately he was forced to shove in shonen tropes like all the powerups he got out of nowhere. So on the one hand Horikoshi got fucked by retarded editors who wanted the manga to fit the mold for a shonen, but he also didn't handle the later arcs gracefully and the writing went right over a cliff, and it's hard to say that the blame is entirely on the editors for that one.
>>283453933>At some point Jump decided to shut that imprint down and Hagi was never told about it, after I think maybe a year or something of no one coming to pick up manuscripts he contacted Shueisha about it and they told him the magzine he was in was done, so he had to switch to weekly Jump (with an irregular schedule obviously) for a brief period before moving to Ultra Jump and then the infinite hiatus started. Pic related was the very last page of Bastard!! that appeared in weekly Jump before it moved to UJ. Jesus Christ. Fuck Shueisha so much. Sons of bitches.
>>283453933Whatever the reason, you can see the difference from the chapter in which Uriel becomes a tentacle monster, it's the start of Hagi's heaviest digital art phase where lines get thinner and sometimes blurry, the character faces start transitioning to his modern ayylmao style, and the spreads get chaotic with digital effects.Story was still ok despite being off the rail with angels and demons, but at least he sticked to some apocryphal version of the scriptures and created a lore with some mysteries (the messiahs, the double Lucifer/Satanael, the moon, etc). But if a single fight with an archangel must last 10 years and then you stop drawing forever, fans are going to get salty.
>>283454162The real question is what were they hoping was going to happen? He just quits and they have to stop paying him? >>283454242There was clearly a point duing the Defenders of the Faith arc where he was using the manga just to draw whatever he wanted and the story became less important. Which is a shame because the story in Bastard!! is actually very nice, yes it's largely a bibical old testament re-telling but it still had enough twists and intrigue in it to keep it interesting. >it's the start of Hagi's heaviest digital art phase where lines get thinner and sometimes blurryThe other thing to remember was that Hagiwara was a real early pioneer of digital art in manga. Pic related is from the early 2000s, which is impressive to consider. The only outright older pioneer was Buichi Terasawa who tried it in the early 90s (possibly even the very late 80s) but the technology was nowhere near what it needed to be to achieve his vision.
>>283441490Mob psycho 100 and One Punch Man(webcomic)
>>283452849him going crazy was necessary for pairing up with the Jorge Joestar maniac
Art is what tells the story of a manga. It doesn't have to be technically or classiacally good, it has to be good at telling the story as intended. So a take like this >>283443341 completely misses the point compared to more nuanced approach like this >>283449461>>283450794And this is just retarded when anime adaptation is just advertisement for original story.
>>283450682Blame artist kinda sucks when it comes to faces though, he can only draw derp faces
>>283458447That was 20 years ago. During this time he dropped the black and crosshatching autism and learnt to draw human faces and bodies.
>>283441490ITT series carried by their art
>>283459519nah, he just dropped the black. his faces are still as derp
