>>283482648As someone who found Watanare the only anime I have ever liked, it has depth and seriousness that most anime could not hope to dream of. Mai accurately depicted as a true narcissist is just one area where it shines. Its characters were truer to life. If you want to bring in a female audience, then you need to depict them with a high degree of reality, which Watanare also does while still having an anime heart. I would add a dimension to the idea of speeding up the pace. What this means to a novelist like me is they cut all the stuff out that never mattered. This is the area in the regular novel world that the editor does. This means editing and revision were key. You can't save the good stuff for later. You need to bring your best game on page one and continue that on every page until it's over. Watanare the anime, was the editing and revision the novel and magna never had. I would go one step further and say it is the editing and revision most other anime stories never get.I don't think the draw for most people to Watanare is the harem aspect. It is completely secondary. It is the complex interaction of the characters and the individual relationships being three-dimensional and dynamic. The complexity of having all those relationship arcs with well-written characters in a "harem" just adds depth. It could survive without the polyamory. It's just more interesting with it. I would also say the idea of the multiple intersecting relationships is much more of a real-life dimension of lesbian life than it is in straight life. They don't necessarily happen at the same time, but they happen. It's complete fantasy on the straight side.
