Honesty, I'm not surprised - this reminds me of Drifters that have the same exact issue (release schedule doesn't exist, so you can wait for a single chapter for more than a year, and scanlation groups can't just sit on their asses and do nothing during that time, so they either disband before new chapters come out or move on and pick up other series but no longer have free time to come back once new chapters are released)

The worst thing is that NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENS in Rei - it's a sequel that exists purely to blueball its fans out of proper ending. Like 70% of original cast is fucking dead (so only supernatural beings are still alive) and all you get is the same loop of events that don't move the main plot an inch forward

And that's fucking it, that's xxxHolic Rei for you. Absolutely nothing of value has happened since original manga's ending and Rei's start - one can only wonder why continuation was ever a thing (not the first time for CLAMP to just drop and memoryhole one of their series if that was the case)

As excuse to drop xxxHolic with open ending and never make Rei, I was using X as example. It's one of their manga that was dropped in 2003 and it never came out of hiatus. Pretty sure they have several other series on hiatus (looking up their info shows Clover, Gate 7 and Legal Drug / Drug and Drop among other series that went on hiatus for 10-20 years and never came out of it) but X is probably the most famous case of dropped manga among CLAMP works.
As for CLAMP hags "actually want things this way" - probably, because they had no issues with starting and ending CCS: Clear Card in 8 years with 80 chapters in total (and one character is even ported to xxxHolic Rei in latest chapters, probably not for long though)... while xxxHolic Rei is sitting at 66 chapters in thirteen fucking years with no progress (or ending lol) in sight. I don't think it's a writer block either because why the fuck would you even start a sequel to finished manga if you never had a clear vision as what to write in it (outside of filler).
At least Tsubasa got a short finished sidestory (just to work as crossover for Rei at the start) and nothing else, thank fuck for that.
