Studio Ghibli or something Miyazaki-esque usually does better than shounen anime. Spirited Away made $70 million while the best Detective Conan movie made $50 million and then there's Suzume that made $112 million.

Key word here is estimated, because Box Office Mojo tends to lower its earnings after they adjust with FX (the yen isn't doing good nowadays). I say wait until the end of the year to get the final numbers. Asian movies are a nightmare to track because of FX volatility.

I read up on Demon Slayer's distributor and they're not very known compared to Zootopia's that literally owns over half of the theaters across China and is government-backed or as influential as Ne Zha's. Even Suzume's Chinese distributor is more known than Demon Slayer's. Spirited Away was distributed by the same company who's screening Zootopia in China which is a big deal, because it's not just whether the movie is good or not, it's also a matter of who shares that movie.I think it will do similar numbers to Taiwan, it has enough breathing room to male around $20 million if lucky but Zootopia 2 will hurt its performance. It will be frontloaded and find its niche.

If rumors are true and this movie was meant to be released for October then the Chinese government picked November intentionally to give Zootopia priority. The China Film Group owns a huge portion of theaters across China and backed by the government while Demon Slayer's distributor is smaller and privately owned.

Deku doesn't have a quirk, also . . . anyway, his cute little sister survived, but she's a vampire now, and then a professional demonslayer shows up and he's going to kill the little sister, but Deku fights really bravely to defend his sister even while she's also trying to bite him and stuff, and he pulls off a couple pretty neat tricks for a kid with a hatchet against a guy with a badass magic sword. So the demonslayer is all icy and stoic, but he's really moved by Deku's utter desperation and how tragic and fucked up it all is, so he sends Deku to an old mountain hermit to do ninja training and then he gets a magic sword and the little sister is trained to be a vampire who doesn't need blood, and she gets some vampire magic powers, and then there's a ton more fighting and a bunch more Demonslayers are introduced, and a couple of sidequest adventures, then one more big training arc, then Deku will eventually fight Michael Jackson the vampire with everybody else at his side, all his friends and rivals who fought and trained with him to be demonslayers together, and he gets a cute demonslayer GF with PTSD, and he gets a couple of sidekicks. One is kind of funny, the other is almost always super annoying except for very big moments where he's really awesome with one special move or else he says some pretty funny pervert kid lines, because that's his deal, he's half pervert, half coward. He gets a little less annoying at the end. Other guy is grug-brained battle brute who wears a pig mask. There's one really cool episode where Deku is doing mountain ninja training and these kids train with him for a bit and he steadily gets good enough to beat them and then it turns out they were ghosts of kids killed by demons the year before, it's pretty good.
