The romance genre is inherently held back by the fact that showing two people falling in love and starting a relationship is easy, but actually showing the hard work that goes into maintaining a relationship, as well as making that interesting for the author to write about and for the audience to read is much harder. It's no surprise then that most fiction focuses more on platonic or familial relationships because those are much easier to write about.
pic unrelated? if you want to use an off-the-shelf chart of romance anime for your troll threads you need to do something about Aobuta being there because it proves every dumb point you try to make wrong
Yuri and Yaoi unironically doesn't have that problem much these days. Maybe stop consooming shitty high school and isekai romances?
>>283519918Yuri and yaoi doesn't have that problem much because it gets axed before it can progress that far. Agreed on isekai, but what the fuck, high school's the only way to go. Adult romance is boring, who wants to fuck an adult?
>>283519713The themes and plot centering around two characters getting together are often completely different than the themes plot centering around two characters maintaining a relationship. Featuring both the couple getting together and maintaining a relationship causes a huge turning point where much of the story "shifts" once the couple gets together. Even if character arcs and themes for this shift are planned for in advance, they're not what the original audience was all that interested in, so you get a fracturing or loss of your readerbase. Most authors don't even have the writing chops to pull off a story where two characters get together in the first place.
>>283519918Yaoi and Yuri aren't romance, they're fapbait
>>283520017I do
>>283519918High School and Isekai are not styles or genres, those labels mean absolutely nothing in terms of writing
>>283519918There are a few good straight romances series out there, but they're mostly in shoujo.>>283520017Of the ones that do continue, they often feature the characters focusing on their relationship. See Watanare from last season. There's also several series about two characters maintaining a romantic relationship from the beginning.
>>283520170Shojo romance is written the same as shonen romance, except one is aimed at the boys and the other is aimed at girls.
>>283519773Not really, Sakuta and Mai's relationship takes a huge backseat to the puberty syndrome of the week girl. It's also effortlessly perfect, they trust each other unconditionally.
>>283520216Boys and girls typically want different tropes out of their romance.
>>283520170Watanare doesn't have an actual couple in it (as far as the anime goes), it just has a doormat being sexually assaulted by various women.
>>283520216And women generally have better taste then men when it comes to romance.
>>283520280They still aren't any fucking differentShounen and shojo romance are written with the same quality, just with different tropes to appeal to different genders.
>>283520277They become a couple by the end of the anime.
I have always felt that a large part of shounen and seinen romance isn't actually romance per se, but stories meant to give the protagonist (and by extension the reader who sees themselves in the protagonist) with waves of romantic validation as a kind of escapist fantasy. The point isn't to show a romance, but to make the reader feel continuously desired. That's why all too often the story is a harem and the real relationship doesn't actually happen until near the end of the story, getting very little development or focus. There are exceptions to this of course, but even in these exceptions many times the relationship takes a back seat to whatever the main thrust of the story is, because the mostly male readership doesn't actually care about the trials and tribulations of real relationship drama too much.
>>283520378>I love you because... I just love you okay??Can someone explain to me why /u/ overhyped this show last season?
>>283520456Obviously got Watanare mixed up with Watatabe.
>>283520607Who?
>>283519713Don't care. The best romance focuses on as many couples getting together as possible
>>283520646Yuri isn't romance
>>283520230I felt the same way, especially during season 2. But you've still got stuff that doesn't fit, like Banished or Tonikawa.
>>283520665It's not yuri, retard
>>283519713some of your examples stray so far from the point you're trying to make, I'd imagine you just grabbed this from reddit or something. kaguya has another 120-140 chapters of them trying to make things work out after confession and start of a relationship, spice and wolf has 17 volumes of them trying to make their awkward relationship work, tonikawa is all about making things work on top of the mythological parts. aobuta is not romance first, but they very much make things work throughout despite all their difficulties, and no it's not "too perfect", a fully committed unconditional relationship really is like that at least at that age. more than a married couple is such a comedic but fascinating study of a relationship under absurd settings. and so on and so forth. pure romance is very rare for seinen or shounen, it almost always either has to have action or comedy mixed into it for there to be any audience at all.
>>283520230that answers OPs question, implying it was asked in good faith, that well-functioning relationships just tend to be kind of boring and serve little more than as a status quo on top of which you can tell other stories>>283520669S2 had the best moments of their relationship since the dreaming movie, what are you even talking about?
>>283520456Watanare is haremslop but with a yuri skin so that makes it automatically good to yurifags. People will forgive shit writing in their preferred genres all the time, and this isn't just limited to yurifags, it's a universal phenomenon.
>>283520456Because Renako is adorable like a puppy? But if you want a list of reasons why I think it's better than a lot of other shows:>there's actually progress in the relationships by the end of the show>physical intimacy is depicted and both girls eventually get into it>the MC has important non-romantic friendships (the next arc is about one)
If your romance manga has any drama at all people complain. And then they complain if there's no drama, calling it boring.
>>283520665Yuri is the only romance worth reading
>>283520848>People will forgive shit writing in their preferred genres all the time, and this isn't just limited to yurifags, it's a universal phenomenon. It's not really about shit writing vs non-shit writing. I don't really have an issue with the fact that that it's "bad" writings for the girls to have unbaked personalities and justifications for why they like the MC. I dislike the lack of progression, intimacy, and side couples. Those aren't inherently good or bad things, but I personally prefer a series where the characters get together after 3 volumes instead of the end instead of waiting.
>>283520280They very much do not.
>>283520960It's not about shit vs. non-shit writing for /you/ because you like romance as a genre. Anyone not inherently into the genre will need a certain level of art/writing to enjoy it at all.
>>283520909The big problem with that is that there's a lot of stuff with too much drama and a lot of stuff that really is too boring but a lot of people can't appreciate what's in the sweet spot. People who have never been in a relationship want stuff with too much drama because they have no concept of how shitty it is to deal with drama, and a lot of the people I've seen who want stuff that's too boring are queers who've never been in a healthy relationship and use weird infantile language about how adorable it is to see girls kissing.
>>283520976the future is female, old man
>>283521102Would you not describe the harems or romcoms featured in OP's pic as romances? Regardless, I wouldn't say that I like romance. I like certain tropes associated with romance and hardly find those tropes in a lot of straight works for men. That's why I prefer yuri and the occasional shoujo and a rare seinen that interests me.
>>283520456The bar for haremshit has been in hell since IS 2 and continue to set new lows with shit like Bokuben, Cuckoos, and eventually KusoKari. /u/tards get a pass with watanare since it's biggest problem is that Satsuki didn't get enough screen time.
>>283521268Yuri is onyl good for ecchi, fanservice and hentai.
>>283519713OP's shitty collage is full of mediocre shit targetting lonely male faggots. Fuck you and fuck the retards that eat those shitty shonen romcoms.
>>283521945>shit targetting lonely male faggots. Is there a thriving subset of romance that isn't targetting lonely faggots? Male or female, had experienced relationships or not, I feel that the romance genre largely targets those who are, at the moment of delving into the genre, lonely. There's of course some exceptions in the romance genre, but this is how it is for the most part.
>>283521471Can you actually call "harem that end in mono" harem?
The best romances are like the one in Dr. Slump
>>283519918>gays only indulge in soulless sexWow who could have guessed.
>>283519713Romance in media in general is held back by that shit. Since the 'will they wont they' section is the most exciting they try to drag it out as much as possible. Only time I give it a pass is in stories where the romance isn't the main focus and there's more dire story stuff going on as a way to excuse why the characters aren't worrying too much about relationship shit at the moment.
>>283519918Because nobody cares about meaningless sterilized garbage. Cumming into an asshole or rubbing clits may as well happen between homosexual strangers. It doesn’t matter so anything goes.
>>283521945Target audience does not impact writing, shonen romcoms are written the same way as shojo ones.
>>283519713Wong, the issue is that unless the story is a shameless self-inserting fantasy then the before and after the relationship starts are just too different stories so their bound to lose the interest of the original audienceThe same happens with other genres, you always have retards saying they want to know Aragorn's tax policy and Frodo's life on the shire after destroying the ring but most of the audience for that story knows they wouldn't care to read about that
>>283519773>troll threadsHate retarded zoomers so damn much
>>283526054zoomers don't even know what trolling is, including zoomer jannies who didn't know there was a rule against "bait" threads
