Question: I saw many video essays saying Evangelion is a very intellectual and thematically deep work and the creator was actually a critic of tropes in anime designed to appeal to otaku and was interested in taking it further as an art. I’m not a anime fan but they inspired me to watch the film but I’m confused about this part. What is the thematic meaning is scene trying to portray? Isn’t it inappropriate to portray a teenage character this way, what audience is it meant to appeal to? Thank you.

Imagine the smell. Just breathing it in as you are driven into the wall as those toes mash into your face.

>>283593899Your average Western video essayist likely doesn’t realize that these critiques are, in fact, part of the genre conventions of the real robot subgenre of mecha. Depressed child soldiers fighting in an apocalyptic nightmare, the course of which is far beyond their ability to control or direct, goes all the way back to the original Gundam show in the 70s

>>283593899Evangelion is simultaneously critical of otaku pandering and anime tropes and pandering to otaku who buy the merchandise. Yes you can do both at the same time, yes it makes Anno a hypocrite, no nobody cares.>Who does this appeal toMe but I still prefer Rei
>>283593899Hmmmm I think you might need to watch a couple more video essays to find out.
>>283593899>I’m not a anime fan but they inspired me to watch the filmGet the fuck off of my board
>>283593899It's not deep. Never was, even when it was not just a cash grab. They throw 100 things on the wall and hope something sticks. The fan boys do the heavy lifting can connect the dot into something that makes kinda sense and if something doesn't make sense they blame themselves for not getting it.

>>283612045It’s deep, not in terms of symbolism or lore, but in the relationships between the characters (for example, the hedgehog’s dilemma). It’s a strongly auteur driven and personal work, where Anno poured parts of himself into every main character. Even just thinking about the ending, Shinji manages to recognize the beauty in those imperfect connections, even if he still can’t fully accept himself, but he chooses to stay. It’s a very mature and far from superficial conclusion.>>283615846Any work can be downplayed or mocked like that , cynicism doesn’t equal maturity.
>>283593899Evangelion is about human connection at its core, you may risk being hurt by opening up to others to form connections but you need to try anyway.

>>283593899The same 'people' who seriously try to argue that NGE is 'deep' are the same pseud retards who cope by insisting that CSM's Denji being a sperg simp and gooner with no backbone for two whole parts is because "muh Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs" despite Fujimoto outright stating that that dominant abusive women are just his kink. The only thing EVA is a deconstruction of is the Mecha genre and even that is far from new because the father of Gundam himself did that several times over in Victory and Zeta Gundam just to name a few, but otherwise it was Hideaki Anno's self-therapy/cope session due to Japan being very anti-therapy generally and people who are medicated or require such are seen as both weak and mentally defective since they break the cohesion of their conformist society where "The nail that stands out gets hammered down" is an unironic saying to dissuade individualism over the collective. TL;DR--It's not actually that deep or groundbreaking as most of us Westerners tend to mistake it as.
