>>283594479The king of demons decides he wants to retire, but rather than have the kingdom go to one of his two sons (one carrying the powerful Baou spell), he decides to give the Bao child (as an infant) to adoptive parents and have the next generation of demons fight to decide who will be the next king. Rather than fight in the demon world, he sends them to the human world along with a book that will allow whoever the demon decides to pair themselves with to access their power, the spells being powered by the human's will (called heart power). As the demons become more powerful, more powerful spells will appear in their book, which the partner can read to make the demon cast said spell. In the fight, destroying the opposing demon's book will cause them return to the demon world, and all demons that lose return to the demon world as souls, which the winner and next king of the demon world getting to decide the fate of these souls.

In the Kanzenban Extras chapters, the battle to determine the next king is suggested to occur before major wars happen. Regarding Bell's Dad, he mentions that there were three great wars during his 1000-year reign, each one threatening to annihilate the demon world. This implies a sense of preparation among demonkind for a impending war. So, it would be impossible to secure the King's position with just one clan. Clear pretty much lost cause everybody said "fuck that guy" rather than Gash winning by himself for example. Although having Baou as a spell is awesome, Gash possessing Baou (full power) being more powerful than having Faudo, it's very dangerous to use if overexerted because it can kill its users. It's worth noting that Baou was more like a curse being trust to Gash rather than something good being gave it away in previous Demon King's eyes. Gash was a big target to be taken down by many demons in the batttle, but by being a nobody, it gave both him and Kiyo more time till Faudo's arc, when Baou was explained futher.
