Why was Broly so popular?
Remember when Trunks got super buff and tried to fight Cell, but because he lacked a fighting intuition he ended up weighing himself down and draining stamina? That’s just Broly. An asset flip made to fill a movie slot. He is the epitome of the Dragon Ball fanbase and the progenitor of powerscaling fandom. There is no strategy, there is no thematic importance, there is no characterization. There is only pure might, and the worst Dragon Ball villains have that in common.

the super saiyan became a bullshit plot device that turned the tables too easily. seeing the trump card turn against the heroes was an interesting concept for the series. Broly's design is also perfect, he's taller than everyone else, his hair flares up like a lion's mane of a crown and it's just outright intimidating. japan is full of beta manlets so big guys are their quintessential bad guys, see Toguro, Raoh, Sagat, Sigma, etc.

Monkey kid gets stronger and stronger and explore every possible aspect of existence. You get to the end and he undermines the whole premise by reminding you directly that this was all for fun, and shouldn't be taken too seriously. People who don't like the buu saga hate having fun. This is such a perfect, beautiful fucking ending for this series.And one addition: most of the mangakas who grew up with dragon ball did not get that this was the whole point. The made bigger and bigger fights, with characters becoming edgier and edgier, trying to somehow convince you very hard that there could be actual stakes in a power-fantasy fight between toys. This is never the case.The ONLY one who understood what Dragon Ball was really about is Oda - and the Nika form embodies this perfectly. This is why One Piece is still there while everybody else run out of steam. Yes it's a beautiful fable with political themes, but it's never "deep". It tells a very simple message (be free, have fun, punch your local oppressor) and it focuses on being cartoonish and having fun, which is what a media for kids should do.

Zly was essentially a slave to his Saiyan nature, where he acted like an average DBZ Saiyan cranked up to 11. There was only one brief scene of Zly acting calm, where Paragus put the mind control device on him as he was sleeping.

It's also one of the only times in the series we see a villain take on like the entire main cast at once and come out on top, and that kind of thing makes a big impression on kids. Personally, I also think the more blueish green color his hair had when he initially transformed was cool and distinct.

I still don't get the goku crying thing, did broly somehow remember that from way back and associated the crying with his childhood trauma? Or was it one of those 2deep4u things in japanese media about fate or some shit? The only other thing I could think of is him possibly somehow recognizing gokus KI signature and triggering a PTSD episode that cause him to have the ultimate sperg out.
