Eva is still a deep work you like or not. Every frame has twenty different religious symbols, and if you understand them all, you get the whole meaning. If you connect every frame like a jigsaw puzzle you can finally understand this masterpiece, but no one got to that point yet. Anno can say whatever but he is just a tool, Eva is much more than a product it is basically the meaning of life. It was already written way before the universe was created. If you dont understand at least 5 frames you are a low iq monkey, Neon Genesis Evangelion is the ultimate form of art and the best anime ever made.

>>283611336I think what most people don't understand is that Anno doesn't have a major in western philosophy or even attempted to study Jewish and Christian's theology behind a very superficial level. If anything Japanese Buddhism has a way more central role in Eva, but most western fans can't see it for obvious reasons but it's not really a metaphor or symbolism, it's just the outlook the author had on life when he made it that is made by his culture and upbringing. Eva in the west is the very definition of Death of the author and how people can find personal meaning where it was completely different.
