I’ve known about Ufotable since the early 2010s through the Fate series, but as far as I remember, MAPPA suddenly appeared in the mainstream anime scene around the time of the pandemic.
Where were they hiding before that? And how do they have so much funding and manpower now, despite not having been a particularly accomplished studio before?

they almost went bankrupt due to the commercial failure of Metropolis and Redline and had to sell out to production committees
this pissed Maruyama off and he left and founded Mappa (eventually the same thing happened to Mappa and he left to found M2)
