Shiori backstory ending on meeting Hinako. EP11: More backstory, interlude set during backstory. EP12: More depressed Hinako, ending on her going into the sea. EP13: THAT scene, plus whatever epilogue or tease they want to wrap up the season with.

I realized the first 30-ish chapters are really well written with the anime. We will have essential spoilers until the very end of the season. Every story beat has a place. After that it actually got some real fillers with the Tanuki...

Hinako has a severe lack of empathy. "I'm glad my best friend is a monster because she won't miss me even though she manifested a human avatar from her shrine specifically to care for me" is such a heartless way of thinking.

If we go by The Little Mermaid parallels, Shiori wanting to take the place of Hinako's family as number one in her heart might be more than just a declaration of adoration or obsession, but actually critical to the resolution of the youkai blood pact whatever. In the fairytale, in order to gain an immortal soul, the little mermaid also had to make the prince "love you so much that you were more to him than his father or mother", and if she failed, she'd die of a broken heart and dissolve into sea foam. Not only that, but she also was given a similar messed-up ultimatum to Shiori's new pact with Hinako: her sisters made a second deal with the sea witch in exchange for a magic knife. If she killed the prince with it, the spell would be undone and she'd return to being a carefree mermaid. just like Shiori now has a choice between eventually killing Hinako even when she stops wanting to die, almost certainly returning to being a depressed monster never having any ties to "this side" ever again, or facing whatever youkai-blood-magic (presumable) consequences there would be for breaking her word.I bet that the finale is going to reveal that Hinako being able to move on and truly want to live for Shiori rather than die for her family gives a loophole or other way to fulfill the oath, but otherwise one of them inevitably will die.Or maybe Miko is the air spirit who, unlike water spirits whose glorification depends upon the love of a single mortal, is able to gain an immortal soul by doing good deeds for 300 years, and she'll just get Shiori to do that as well.
