Chapter 40Today we start volume 4. Previously, Chunhua took Shima with her to meet her taijiquan master to prove to him that she could handle Liu Yansheng but Shima advised her against it. Instead, they went to the consultant Mito who used his connections to hire a detective named Hong Zhuhu. Using data from the phone Chunhua had taken from her assailiants, he learned that Liu was connected to two rival Triad groups and used that to spread chaos. Blaming Liu for plans being leaked, one of them eventually murdered him. When Chunhua's father saw this, he seemed to immediately regai his senses and both her and Shima finally got vengeance for what Liu had done to them.At the same time, Mangame had come to Shanghai to meet with Sun Rui, head of a an electronics manufacturer called Chufa, in order to enter into an alliance for them to help sell Hatsushiba products in China while Hatsushiba would help sell Chufa products in Japan. Sun, being an admirer of Hatsutaro Yoshihara and impressed by both Shima and Mangame, agreed. But while he seemed affable and upstanding, Shima came to realize that he also wasn't someone to be trifled with. And there were things going on in Shima's personal life too. While in Tokyo for New Year's, he met with Nami and her lover, an African-American man named Fred Thomson, and learned that she was pregnant. While in Beijing, he was surprised to see Xiaolan, Kokubun's girl from Eiraku, there before learning she was originally from Beijing. Shima also caught the eye of Yuko, the Mama of a Japanese-style hostess bar. She was a friend of Noriko and set her sights on trying to land the man that Noriko was unable to.
That's it for today. Next time, Shima and Yuko visit the Great Wall of China. Because of course there wasn't going to be a China story arc without the Great Wall showing up.

>>283979013The Chnese companies likely contract cheaper than the Japanese ones.
>>283980800yeah but why? this scene >>283975596 implies japanese workers went along with the factory changing to china, is that the case?
>>283980901Japanese companies are encouraged to move their factories to China so they can make parts without the cost of import fees. The Japanese workers work alongside Chinese workers essentially teaching the Chinese workers how to make these parts. Now that there's Chinese workers with knowledge of how to do it, they leave and go to Chinese companies that are all Chinese workers. Chinese workers are cheaper so the Chinese companies are cheaper to work with and the Chinese companies are fine with it because it's strengthening domestic manufacturing. Because Chinese companies are cheaper, the Japanese companies decide to work with them especially since their margins are already thin because their products are having to compete with cheaper domestic ones. The Japanese companies always assumed this was a distinct possibility but as said they didn't expect it to happen so fast. In the end the larger companies don't really care as long as they're still making money. Smaller companies and ones dependent on the larger ones for business really have no choice: they go along with it or go under but given how the business is and all manufacturing shifts to cheaper companies it's all but inevitable anyway. It's a symptom of how the neoliberal policies declared "line go up" to be the only metric that matters. Hollowing out your own domestic industry and essentially empowering your rivals to eventually supplant you doesn't matter so long as your quarters look good. And once domestric industrial production has been destroyed there's no real getting it back because it'll never be able to compete with cheaper outsourced labor. Once China gets too expensive it'll move elsewhere which is already happening (Vietnam is the big one and IIRC China's starting to move a lot of its mannufacturing to places like Cambodia and Bangladesh). But there are probably others who know better than I would since I'm not a business person or economist.
>>283981404I understood all that. it's just that the idea of bringing the japanese workers along, and continue paying them the same relative higher salary seems kinda crazy to be doing in the first place.
>>283981919It was just shitty foresight and underestimating the Chinese. Basically they didn't care because they thought the bill wouldn't be due for another generation at least and any day things were going to turn around.
>>283975745Thank you for posting.

>>283981404>It's a symptom of how the neoliberal policies declared "line go up" to be the only metric that matters. You can't magic a law that says "make economy good now" into being. People tried that; everyone either starved to death our put each other in mass graves.>doesn't matter so long as your quarters look good. Quarters looking good means people get to have jobs and eat. If only people could just stop eating for a few years so we could orchestrate the perfect economic system for them. I tell you, we'd have the utopia if only it weren't for all these damn people.
Chapter 46
>>284000023>you are lonesome tonightSHIMA DON'T YOU DARE GO AFTER MISUZAWA'S WIDOW
Whoops, anyway that's it for today. Next time, Shima and Koriyama contemplate Japan's future both in China and in general.
>>284000204brutally realistic
>>284000407this was the strongest character death since nakazawa, and it blends emotional moments with business politics in a very strong way. 10/10 would never step foot in china again.
>>283997423I think you're mistaking "line go up" mentality with capitalism as a whole, but that's not correct. You can have capitalism without the manic focus on short term profits. Businesses have plenty of long-term considerations they could focus on instead (like building and maintaining a competent, loyal labor force instead of letting the competency crisis fester), but if they're publicly traded then they're beholden to fickle and impatient investors who don't give a flying fuck about whether the business exists two years from now so long as next quarter looks good.Or to put it another way, not all decisions that are good for investors are good for consumers, employees, or even the business' own long term health.
>>284000829I think what made this death hit harder was how meaningless it is in the grand scheme of things. Previous Shima deaths happened to characters who had a clear goal or recent triumph, but this was just a random guy screwed over by economic conditions.

>>284004649Personal injury attorneys will get that money. This guy must have pretty good lawyers to commit suicide
>>284004649It was determined by the cops not to be his fault and the chapter never actually says one way or the other that he killed himself and even gives plausible outs. It's intentionally left ambiguous beyond the wife's own gut feeling but that isn't a firm yes or no either so the insurance company really has no choice.>>284007655That's sort of a theme from day one. Salarymen lead somewhat pathetic lives where their loyalty can amount to nothing based on essentially the whims of fate, that their devotion to the job often leaves their personal lives complete disasters, but it's the path they chose to walk so they'll keep walking it until they get to whatever the end happens to be.
>>284009673>It was determined by the cops not to be his fault>>284000098even if it wasnt intentional he's the one at fault here, there's no doubt. no insurance would pay unless you can prove he had a stroke or whatever.
>>284009762Japanese insurance might not be as coldheartedly willing to do everything in its power to avoid paying like American insurance.
>>284000869And that isn't the problem facing Japan in this manga. In fact, it specifically laid out the problems in previous chapters. It's not the fault of le greedy investors that their China ship is sinking. Hanging all the kulaks will not fix the economic problems, anon. Again, it's been tried.

Once the US was no longer propping their industries up and the catch up effect no longer applied, there was only only so much room left to grow.Capitalism in the modern sense faces this problem because it, like any system, has its limits after bringing benefits beyond its peak period for each nation. The problem is that after the Cold War, we have yet to figure out where to go after the current systems run their course and are no longer beneficial.
>>284030762It seemed to be making strides or at least holding steady until covid. It'll be interesting to see how that's eventually covered because it definitely will be once it makes it to that point.
>>284027297thanks op.
>>284026842Louis Armstrong - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rnd8GWhvBG0but that's a nice catch, too >>284027304>>284026886So why aren't the Japanese being very good at their jobs? You can't luck your way into a generational mindset change, but he can breed a new one (3 times a week)

>>284028429The struggle is real.
>>284026886>>284026906>>284026929What a way to get immediately thrown outside the board, were it not a fictional manga.
>>284037143Realistically what would you expect? Just curious.
>>284030332We just don't know.
>>283975624Damn
>>283981404I'm completely green on all of this, but what confuses me is why would Chinese workers move to Chinese companies if they're cheaper? Wouldn't this imply that they're getting better compensation at Japanese companies?Or is it some case of a worker at a Japanese company getting a higher position at a Chinese one, training the new blood so the individual is doing better while still working at a technically worse workplace?
>>284042490Might be a temporal / cultural thing. I hope it gets talked about more later.
Don't die on me yet
>>284046986We'll make it, brother.

That's it for today. Next time, Kokubun confronts Xiaolan.

>>284051803>>284051893Never trust women.
Is Solar Electric Hatsushiba's nemesis? It's hard to think of other names that could take that spot.
>>284068278they're more like a rival. the true nemesis is the declining dedication of the newer generations and the chinese.
>>284068325We thought we had defeated nature with industry and technology but instead we forfeited the battle against the nature within.
>>284069695hmm, could our faltering economy be the result of its own unrealistic expectations of continuous growth? no, it's those lazy kids! back in my day we worked overtime delivering calendars for our company's honor and we liked it!
>>284069953I think it's less continuous growth and more the expectations and disappointments of modern living. We don't express or satisfy our desires the same way we used to, those same desires that drive cultures, economies and nations. Our plans hinged on those desires not changing.
We're close.

Chapter 49
>>284076340is that a feng shuei hole in the right building?
>You can cuck me all you want but don't cuck the company!
That's it for today. Next time, Kokubun must restore his and Hatsushiba's honor.
>>284076654I guess I can sorta see where he's coming from. It's one thing to be an old man who's probably just playing around with charming young women at his age. It's another thing when your affairs endanger your source of income.

>You should find something more sensible than violence.>I see, you have a poi—NAH FUCK THAT, HONOR DEMANDS WE SETTLE IT LIKE SAMURAI MOTHERFUCKER!
The dishonor has been dealt with, I guess. Anyway that's it for real this time. Next time, Shima visits Nami in New York.
>>284081590ah not want no trouble!
