It's not that they were ruined it's just that the format didn't work very well for a 4-Koma strip like Azumanga because they needed to stretch the bits out so far to fill each episode which kinda fucks with the pacing.
If it was a series of shorts he would've liked them more probably.

The anime's stretched pacing was fine. It's was alright.
And Azumanga also is far from the first 4-koma adaptation. There's definitely a "right" way somewhere to adapt 4-koma to animation properly, but the author couldn't be patient enough to stick with Japan's early experimenting years of 4-koma-to-anime adaptions
