The old man who gave the key to asura, just want someone to sent bad guy to hell. To a point that asura now have superhuman strength to accommodate his job.
Now, what would happen of asura accidentally sent a good guy?
Would hell knew the difference?
I honestly can't wait for that.

Legally speaking it was self-defense. The men entered the house and attacked its residents, and even were warned to stop before being send to India (fun fact: in Buddhism Hell is located directly under the Indian subcontinent).

i think the old key guy has his own supernatural motives, or he just wants to stir up trouble, or he did it just to troll earth and unleashed this ancient demon for no reason in particular. Whether the guys are good or not is ambiguous/irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It is only the humans (asura, the readers) who pass judgement with regards to that. but hell just wants bodies to torture.

maybe hell was running out of bad people because everyone on earth was getting too good, but in my opinion that is gay and i don't care for that. Detectives and yakuza are potentially ok, actually. but so far they have been mostly boring, i agree. i trust that they will become significantly more interesting as this goes on.

Asura is slowly turning into a Buddhist "asura". They are not part of hell proper but occupy an adjacent layer in Buddhist cosmology. Besides being strong as fuck, Asuras are beings ruled by passions. My bet is that at some point his expressionless smile will break down and he will display strong inner passions.

He gets stronger with each keying. Furthermore, it looks like his strength increases are dependent on how evil the person he keyed was. He got strong enough to bend a crowbar after keying the guy who killed multiple people before (suggested by him being an underaker) but he didn't get much stronger after keying individual delinquents.
>>
>>283879185
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asura_(Buddhism)

Asuras are homologous to the Titans of Greek mythology or the giants of Nordic mythology. They are defined among other things by their physical strength.

The author has entirely relied on Buddhist notions of hell thus far (including the designs of the demons and the duration of penance) so his version of asuras is probably the Buddhist rather than the Hindu one.

>>
>>283879867
That would be a bad deed
>>
>>283879858
That’s a fair point. Seems like it would be closer to kidnapping, plus in most of these cases he gives people chances until they get overly physical beating him, so his attack with the key stab should really be considered self defense too.

Honestly love that the strength enables his naive view because it turns him into a true arbiter. He gives people a chance to renounce their ways so he doesn't (at least so far) take an innocent person. Id be game for the series to just be him endlessly wandering and taking out reprobates.
>>
>>283882712
This is not true. One cannot truly expect any of his victims to change their minds in response to his pleas. That is not how it works. His way of changing people's minds is so ineffective as to be null. They never had a chance of escaping the Clutches of Hell; no opportunity to learn the wrongness of the ways which they are set in. Nevertheless, none are innocent among the folk whose lives he claims. But then, who truly is blameless? Is his good friend, Raika, without blame? Doubtful. Raika, like all of Amashiro's victims, would surely also get angry in response to the imperative to do good deeds. Thus, he would also be claimed by the Key. And rightfully so, for none are righteous before Amashiro-Sama.
>>
Another beautiful day of doing absolutely nothing wrong
>>
>>283881314
Yeah as long as he’s still a space case about openly revealing himself that will be his biggest problem even if no one can prove anything, he needs some sense of self preservation.
But even if the detective got a video of Asura keying someone and a big scary demon grabbing them, the police would think the video is clearly edited because no one in a real world setting would readily believe that at all.

Okay? Well then, either listen to the innocent pleas of a child, or get tortured for centuries in hell. If your worst sin is jaywalking, I bet the demons won't have much to work with to cleanse you. Only question is if hell kills you or if once your sentence is over, you just pop back into reality.

>Only question is if hell kills you or if once your sentence is over, you just pop back into reality
According to Buddhism your soul reincarnates as a completely different being in a random period of time, and only being good enough can break the cycle and let you reach enlightment.
>>
>>283879262
To its credit the story does seem to be written with this understanding. The case is hard because the mechanics behind it are insane and no sensible human being would ever consider the truth. The detective here is at least open minded enough that he seems to be making his way there quickly as the circumstances get more insane instead of either instantly being the only man who catches on or stumbling around blind until it's forced into his face.
>>
>>283885079
It did specify that these people are delivered to hell alive, which is against the norm.
>>
>>283882816
>His way of changing people's minds is so ineffective as to be null.
I might be dumb but here's my thoughts. What if the person have doubts about their actions initially? Maybe a chance to repent is what they need and Asura could pick up very subtle hints of when a person is troubled. So far, he had been keying people who have no doubts in their actions when presented a chance.
>>
>>283885131(me)
Also, he immediately keyed people who doubled down on being evil the moment the chance is presented
>>
>>283883938
Before this chapter I thought he was more interested in sending evil doers to hell than potentially reforming them. But now I think he genuinely just wants to people to only do good deeds and would forgive almost anything (maybe not his mother's killer) done prior to that.
>>283882816
Raika is an example of why the "but no one believes him" excuse doesn't matter. Raika is a rough, tough, and realistic kid. Without seeing the hell gate firsthand he'd never believe it. But if Asura saw him beating up bullies and mistook it for him being the bully and told him to stop doing bad deeds, Raika wouldn't just beat the shit out of Asura. He'd explain what was going on and Asura wouldn't key him. Any decent person would think he's weird but ultimately not do anything that would get them keyed.
>>
>>283885186
The work needs to establish the consequences of the key on someone that isn't a hilarious, evil villain. If you key a hero with gleaming deeds, what the fuck emerges? Does a little gaki escape to eat all of his fucking snacks in punishment for the time he absentmindedly littered?
>>
The Buddhist concept of hell is not about being innocent or not. It is about kamma. Every being has good kamma and bad kamma which came about from countless eons of existence in Samsara. Going to hell expends that kamma rather than cleansing it. Once the bad kamma that gave rise to rebirth in Niraya is expended, the being is reborn in another realm. The rebirth process varies depending on the specific rebirth. Devas "pop" into existence, while animals and humans are "born" through a painful process.

When Asura keys someone, its just him sending them to expend their bad kamma, but it is not necessarily the specific bad kamma they made from killing Asura's dog or his grandma. It could be from several lifetimes ago. In fact, more likely than not it is. Whichever kamma was most like the conditions that they got themselves keyed in is the kamma that they will be expending in niraya immediately after getting keyed. Although they all seem to be spending exceptionally long times in niraya when they get keyed, which is rather unusual. So maybe the key is a particularly bad condition to find yourself in.
>>
>>283884187
From what I can tell, Asura retaliating and killing them would satisfy Japan's standards for self defense even for adults in public. So even without consideration for him being a minor assaulted in his own home and attempting to defend an elderly relative, which would all make prosecution social and political suicide for everyone involved, he would still walk.
>>
>>283885131
>>283885158
Asura seems very absolutist about keying people as far as I can tell. I don't think he's much into rehabilitation (based, prisons are gay). Either you promise to be a good boy (and you better keep your promise) or you get tortured in hell for 7 Kali Yugas. He's a competetive good boy tryhard.
>>

Just be a better person than you are a bad person. It's really easy if you don't torture people for fun and rape elderly women.
>>
>>283885418
Asura is substantially more lenient than the place he's sending people. You get trillions of years in Buddhist hell just for butchering animals to eat. Asura was willing to let the guy that may have just fatally injured his only surviving relative go if he just stopped being a violent sociopath.

I know the manga is pointing out the moral standpoints about how Asura's judgement about what is evil might be biased, but that really falls flat when all the keyed people are literal psychopaths. It's concerning that there are so many psychopaths. Remember that he saved Raika and his Mother twice by keying the buck tooth bully and Raika's father.
>>
>>283885763
It's trying, but I think it's failing. It's going to need to make strong, pointed arguments about not removing evil people. Either that, or it goes the lazy route and has Asura start punishing lesser and lesser offenses until they become trivial and you get fifty trillion years in hell becaus you were too harsh with your language.

I'm confused, if a person who goes to hell can expend their karma from a different life. Wouldn't their very first trip to hell expend all of their bad karma and any following trips expend their respective life's bad karma?

For all we know, the key doesn't even work on good people. Or maybe if the user keys an innocent, the demon grabs the keyer instead. Unless Asura runs into a Buddha that has attained nirvana but hasn't died yet, then anyone he keys will have some karma to burn off. But it wouldn't necessarily be enough to earn them a trip to hell or even a worse than human rebirth. So that is definitely something to be explored.
I really want to know what happens if he tries to key a devout Shin Buddhist. Especially if they start chanting the nembutsu as the demon grabs them. Would the Amida Buddha intervene?

Is it? So far I think it's more taking the stance that a child being forced to be the sole arbiter of justice because his society refuses to do anything is a fucked up situation. To whatever extent keying people is naughty, Asura has been left alone to carry the weight of that sin by the authority figures that have failed him and everyone else.
Remember, Asura refused the key until he had literally no other choice. And even now he continues to ask each and every person he considers keying to stop what they're doing. Asura is no Light.

>>
>>283885924
It's complicated. First of all, it is unknown how long a being has been in Samsara. Samsara is without beginning. So the concept of a "first trip" does not apply. Moreover, your pool of both good and bad kamma are so infinitely large that you cannot expend all of it. You can only ever expend infinitesimally small portions. Even a trillion years in Niraya are like nothing. Its not even that you are "expending" kamma, rather, you are simply experiencing the consequences of like causes giving rise to like conditions. So once that has happened, it is on to the next kamma. And so the cycle continues.

Rebirth is dictated by your previous kamma and by the conditions immediately before death. If you have good thoughts before death, you will likely be reborn in the Deva realm ("heaven"), even if you have lived a HORRIBLE life. This is because, on the one hand, you have good kamma from some other, previous life - that you have yet to experience the consequences of; and on the other hand, like causes will give rise to like conditions. So whatever you were doing in a previous moment, in part, dictates what is going to happen to you in the next moment. And this also transcends the boundary of death and rebirth

But the problem is that this cannot always be satisfied IMMEDIATELY, so in some cases, the HORRIBLE kamma is simply stored away for a time when the right conditions arise to experience the consequences of that kamma. That could be instantly, or it could be countless eons in the future. But it is all very complicated and cannot fully be explained. Neither does it have to be fully understood mechanistically.

But in short: nah.
>>
>>283886147
This is a far more useful interpretation of the story. It’s not about redemption, punishing the wrong people, etc. It’s about an innocent kid with a hammer and all the nails that want to kill him.
Imagine if the key was just a gun that left as much believable evidence as the key. Instead of going to hell, the target just dies and their body disappears. Would the story meaningfully change? I would say no because in most of these cases, Asura has very little choice in the matter.
>I’d like these guys who are nutting on my freshly murdered dog and forcing me to eat it to stop, please and thank you. Hell? Sure. I’ll take it.
Place a person in a hopeless situation with exactly one way to fight and they’ll use it. That’s the point of the story thus far.
>>
>>283886402
I don't think that this specifically would work. Asura even says in this chapter that he wants the guy that beat up his granny to turn himself in. So if the police bring someone out, Asura wouldn't see a need to key him. And the police can't exactly let a criminal they've caught start doing bad deeds in a courtroom. Not only would that look insane, I'm not even sure that Asura is dumb enough to take that bait and would instead ask why they're letting this happen.
The easier way would be to just follow him and record him keying someone. Although that would still end up raising the question of why cops stood by while a kid pleaded with some violent criminal to stop and waited for him to "kill" them. There isn't really a way to legally take down Asura without looking like shit.

Would Asura still feel that way about a mass murderer?
>>283886882
What if he is out in a few years?
>>
>>283879262

That's what makes it interesting.

Detectives would carefully navigate their way around the case, looking for nervous or furtive actions from a suspect, not realising that if they just asked Asura directly he would tell them.
>>
>>283887679
>Would Asura still feel that way about a mass murderer?
I think so, yes. So far his standard for keying people has been a person's steadfast commitment to a life that will bring grievous harm or death to others. Someone who is already incarcerated can't clear that bar even if they want to.
>>283887718
He already sort of told them. He didn't say as much to them as to the gang members because they didn't ask. But he did tell them enough that if they just took him at face value they'd know exactly what's going on.

I think the detectives were introduced to break up Kanima's group. We're approaching a three-way encounter between Kanima, the detectives, and Asura. It would feel too cheap if Asura was able to handle Kanima by himself, but it's plausible that the detectives would be able to do this. Maybe Asura will get off scot-free if they pin the blame for the disappearances on the criminals.

When this manga started it was likened to Death Note but 20 chapters laters and I don't see anything of the sort.
Morally, there is nothing to dicuss. Everyone Asura keyed is cartoonishly evil and the only character that offers any kind of resistance is Raika. And even he is hesistant about it. Narratively there is no force opposing Asura or at least something that poses a threat to him. The criminals want him but two of them got off-screened and while the police are being framed as such Asura's personality is too forward to offer any resistance to them.
I know DN is a high bar but there should be a bit of conflict going on. At least at some level.
>>
>>283887679
If the murderer actually repented, yes. Remember Asura doesn't key people for bad stuff they've done (or at least that's what he tells himself), but because he's convinced that if left alone they will do something worse than what they've already done in the future. People my liken him to Light but Asura's more like the Sybil System in that aspect
>>

Maybe the plot is about Asura seeking stronger and stronger evildoers, while getting stronger himself an eventually becoming the {spoiler]HELLlander[/spoiler]

That'd be an interesting future arc. Someone Asura sent to hell returns cleansed of sin and seeks him out to repay him for their redemption, maybe right as the police detectives hone in on him, throwing their "murder" suspicions into disarray.

I think I'm liking it more than death note. Light being a complete dumbass irritated me the whole way through. Not only is Asura being a dumbass a lot more appropriate, in some ways he isn't even as stupid. Specifically in that he didn't succumb to delusions of grandeur the attosecond he was granted any amount of power.
I also prefer the way the supernatural is being handled. I never felt as though death note hit the right balance of incredulity and worldview breaking that would result from magic being introduced in an otherwise mundane world. Literally no one believing anything supernatural is going on unless they've seen a keying firsthand and one of the two witnesses becoming an Asura worshiper strikes me as a lot more believable than a bunch of cops conjecturing about impossible magical shit while barely questioning their sanity or strongly held beliefs.

Asura's problem is that his direct behavior requires someone to bail him out whenever he's about to get caught. Just look at how the cops confrontation was handled. He doesn't seem to develop any signs of self-awareness or survival instinct so far. It would be fine if seeing how he keys people was the highlight and had more creativity to it. The thing is that, he himself doesn't think he's doing anything bad, so to his eyes the police have no reason to arrest him and so he sees not reason to cover any of it. He blindly trusts that anyone in the police must be good people, so he doesn't distrust anyone that is supposed to be 'good'.

Wouldn't you just think you're in a different, possibly worse, part of hell?

>>283897362
Asura doesn't feel like a particularly long story. The issue with the detectives and the mafia can be solved by letting the cops blame the gangsters for the missing kids, and after that it's just more of Asura keying bad guys and Otori becoming a zealot until they have a conflic between them.
>>
>>283901966
I think the detective story will have more to it than that. The older detective seems to have a guilty conscience about something. And I also don't think he's dumb enough to believe the gang are responsible for the disappearances.
>>
>>283899912
It feels like we’ll never know the answer to that. The characters seem to be either normal good people, downtrodden victims, or evil incarnate that will be sent to hell. We have yet to see a gray area.
>>
>>283902755
This manga has a cool premise with the potential to be interesting, but unfortunately the world is boring as fuck cartoon populated by caricatures.
>>
>>283902797
If I thought we were going for that kind of story where we ask “Who is truly deserving of suffering?” then I might agree. However I don’t think that’s the point. Amashiro is an unrealistically good person with rigid morals given only one tool to make the world around him better that just so happens to cause infinite suffering for the victims. That itself is the tragedy, that a good person has no peaceful way to achieve peace.
>>
If the author had anything profound to say, we'd have seen hints of that before the 3rd volume.

>>
>>283903076
what >>283886625 is cool
>>
>>283902901
I don't see how this can be seen as tragedy. This would imply that Asura himself is suffering but he's far from it. He has no issue keying people both in doing it and afterward, his worldview is rewarded, and the people he's doing it to garner no sympathy. Just last chapter he was comedically getting excited at the idea of doing it to the two bully girls.
If he himself was facing difficulties doing it or losing something along the way I would agree. But as of now the only thing we have is that something might happen to him in the future.
>>
>>283903404
Anon, the gang of criminals targeting him just broke into his house and beat the shit out of his granny. He's been dragged into dealing with shit far beyond him all because no one else would.
>>
>>283903546
And he was given super strength to fight with it so great that we don't need to see how he keyed them to believe it. Sure, grandma got socked but I want to see actual reprecussions from that. For him to actually reflect and think a little of what this means. Otherwise he still has no issue keying people either physically or mentally so far.
>>
>>283903613
He needs to start keying people who aren't killing puppies every microsecond for this manga to become interesting.
>>
>>283903640
I think this arc could be a good point for that to happen. The scope of antagonists is much bigger and the chance for him to fuck up is much larger.
I'm also interested in seeing how will he react if he accidently killed someone with his strength instead of sending them to hell.
>>
>>283903613
His grandma getting attacked is already a reprecussion. And so is being the target of a gang.
Asura has thought about what he's doing. And up until now he's come to the conclusion that what he's doing is the right way of going about things. He hadn't been given a reason to believe otherwise.
>>
>>283904454
It means nothing if he kept breezing through any opposition that appear like he's been doing so far. Maybe the rest of the gang will actually offer a challenge but that's something I'll wait to see. Him reacting and realizing the negative fallout of his actions is what I'm asking for.
>>
I can't see this manga ending any other way other than Asura using the key on himself. We have yet to encounter morally grey characters who are aligned good but have no choice but to do "evil" because there's no other alternative. Asura is probably going to come to the realization that people can change over time and using the key so nonchalantly is an extreme overreaction. Asura is evil but he doesn't know it yet.
>>
>>283904552
It's the first time the gang has sent anyone after him specifically and already his only family member is going to need to be hospitalized. That seems like an entirely appropriate level of escalation to me.
>>
>>283905050
We have yet to see how grandma is doing and how Asura himself will react. I'm not saying that nothing will happen but off-screening them in the same chapter they tried to stop him in isn't reassuring.

Actually thinking about it some more there's some butterfly motifs in the previous chapters so Asura is probably going to lose his friends to murder due to a butterfly effect from his actions and he won't be able to cope that it's his fault, also maybe he'll lose the key somewhere down the line and will realize murder really isn't as clean and simple as using the key makes him believe

>We have yet to encounter morally grey characters who are aligned good but have no choice but to do "evil" because there's no other alternative
Asura.

The likelihood of him having always been strong enough to bend a crowbar to a right angle with one hand is 0%.

>Sadly manga series are way less likely to get porn, or any fanart at all
why is that?

He's a 4'11' Japanese teenager doing something that would cause roided up Strongman competitors to pop blood vessels trying to do with both hands. It ain't natty.

>I was expecting AI generated porn actually, but it doesn't even have that which was the surprising part.
Good, why do you fucking coomers infest every thread, no cooming only good deeds here

>Asura is evil
Every person he has keyed so far has deserved it. Asura did nothing wrong only good deeds

Not saying I wanted it, just what I expected.
I was shocked to see a pixiv tag completely devoid of it.

While I don't personally subscribe to this theory, it would make his mom naming him Asura less strange. It could also provide a reason for the extreme belief system she instilled in him.

The older detective probably won't, but I can see the younger one jumping to conclusions in order to protect Asura, and the old fox would just agree until he could get more concrete proof.

I'm guessing because there are lot more manga than anime in general, so it's lot harder to get you manga noticed by an artist willing to do fanart.
Personally I think that moving images and sound are more stimulating to the creative process than still images

I mean you're in 4chan...

I wouldn't be surprised if the younger detective became a full blown Asura cultist like Otori.
