Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the eighth volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump. In addition, as MAO is atypically plot-heavy as a Rumiko Takahashi manga, please be mindful of others and use spoilers tags when discussing things that are revealed later in chapters that have not been dumped.MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue.Previous thread: >>283751102I will be using the official localization of the manga volumes by VIZ (despite my issues with it). Keep in mind that the nature of the writing in MAO and this localization in particular has resulted in some mistranslated lines. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Original title was 紗那の心臓 (Shana no shinzō). Just mentioning this to clarify that this is heart organ, so the anatomical heart rather than anything abstract like 心 (kokoro). November 11th, 2020. Author's note: "Q: November 11th is Battery Day. How do you recharge your motivation?A: Rest well."
>>283907492
>>283907508-sama for Sana. No honorific for Natsuno.
>>283907583I find the use of a different font in Japanese for flashbacks kind of odd. I just wonder why they feel it is necessary. Anyway, the line "This persecution must end!" was translated from something a bit less dramatic: "どうしよう・・・" (Dō shiyō) or "What should I do?"
>>283907662I mean, the sentiment was there given this page. Still I wonder why the change. And yeah, Nanoka's line was え...?
>>283907696"ひどい邪気" (Hidoi jaki) or "terrible evil aura", as we tend to translate it.
>>283907723!
>>283907736黒い邪気 (kuroi jaki) or "black evil aura".
>>283907764Jaki here as well.
>>283907764A surprisingly precise mass of darkness
>>283907777Hakubi-sama in the last panel.
>>283907835Natsuno's "I'm outta here!" was もう行くよ。(Mō iku yo.) which does mean "I'm going now", basically. It does seem relatively informal, but I'm just basing that off of what other translations for the phrase I see.
>>283907878Natsuno-san. Sana-sama. Mao and Yurako get no honorifics here. For different reasons, I assume.>>283907833Surgical, yeah.
>>283907900Oh, hah, the idiom used to refer to being soaked in Japanese literally means "like a drowned rat" it seems. Or wet mouse, I guess? I think it is wise not to translate the expression literally here though, would've been the wrong tone completely. Kamon refers to the ladies as お嬢様 (Ojōsama) as expected here. Nanoka's line was translated to be a bit less vague as well, as it was まだなにも終わってないけど... (Mada nani mo owattenaikedo...) or "Nothing is over yet though..." These tiny bathtubs seem absurdly inconvenient.
>>283908035菜花さんかわいい (Nanoka-san kawaī) or "Nanoka is cute." I think translating the -san as Miss and making the compliment sound more formal is appropriate here. Nanoka's thought here was 乙弥くんはすぐ褒めてくれるのに。 (Otoya-kun wa sugu homete kurerunoni.) or "Otoya-kun is always quick to praise me". So, VIZ sort of made subtext text, though I guess it is pretty direct in Japanese as well.
>>283908108見もしないし。(Mi mo shinaishi.) or "Didn't even look". It is sort of a wash which you think it more natural sounding. "Look twice" is a good expression so I don't begrudge it even if it could be construed as technically inaccurate. Kamon-sama is used by Mao while Nanoka goes with Kamon-san. Nanoka's line in the second to last panel is: "ねえ、摩緒はまだゆら子を追いかけるの?" (Nē, Mao wa mada Yurako o okkakeru no?) or "Hey, is Mao still chasing Yurako?". I assume that this doesn't refer to literal chasing, but maybe it does and VIZ changed it up to sound less odd. Not sure. There is a Furigana お for 追 and maybe that changes something? I don't know. Another suggestion was "Hey, is Mao still being provoked by Yurako?" which does seem more in line with VIZ's translation.
>>283908251呪い (noroi) was the term used for curse here.
>>283908277This page seems a bit different originally. The first panel has Nanoka saying that Sana-sama was also spewing out that same dark jaki. In the fourth and fifth panel, Nanoka says "だって紗那さまのこんな話、摩緒が聞いたらいやがるかなって・・・ それにいつも忙しそうだったしー。" (Datte Sana-sama no kon'na-wa, Mao ga kiitara iyagaru ka natte soreni itsumo isogashi-sōdattashi ̄.) or "Because you'd get upset if you heard something like this about Sana-sama... and besides, you're always busy". As for the last panel, seems VIZ went pretty direct and used "make his vessel" rather than possess.Anyway, you can decide if you feel this is fine, but to me it seems that VIZ messed up how Nanoka was directly relating the events of the information Byoki mentioned in the first panel and made her complaint less specific "obsessing with Sana" rather than "If I tell you she spews curses like Yurako, you'll be upset".
>>283908108Nanoka does look cute! I think she has more different outfits in this volume than she does on average.
>>283908443End of chapter. No emphasis dots in the original, but the text was very big.
Original title was 憑きもの落とし (Tsukimono otoshi). This does translate to exorcism, but I figured I'd give you the specific term. 憑きもの (tsukimono) refers to an evil spirit that possesses someone, devil or demon and seems to break down into "possessing thing". 落とし (otoshi) can mean to dropping, losing and similar terms but also refers to removing something (casting out). November 18th, 2020. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us what would win your Personal Buzzword Contest this year!A: Apologies, apologies, apologies!!"
>>283908572VIZ had to move some dialog around in the final panel to make this flashback panel work, since they did a marginal bit of adjusting that would make a direct copy not work. I know people cringe when they hear the word "awkward" in localization since is cliche, but Nanoka did say that. She said "気まずい!" (Kimazui!), so VIZ spared us of Nanoka just shouting "Awkward!" in her thoughts here.
>>283908632Nanoka-ojōsama as before.
>>283908496Tactful as always, Kamon
>>283908652Uozumi referred to the Taisho era here in the first panel and the last. In regards to the kimono, she said "たたんでおきましたので。" (Tatande okimashitanode.) which seems to mean "I folded it up." but presumably implicitly refers to washing it as well, but I don't know. Nanoka uses -san for Uozumi. The term translated as charm was 形代 (Katashiro). And yes, Nanoka asks specifically about food and hobbies in the Japanese as well.
>>283908768The term used for "most basic things" was 普段の事 (Fudan no koto) or "everyday things". So, a little bit different but not by much. A little hard to translate in a natural sounding way in English.
>>283908815
>>283908825This was a chapter title drop in the original. Not like, an exciting one or anything. I just figured I'd mention he uses the same term.
>>283908843Cute fox thing. I checked if the sound effect was "kon" but it was きいっ (Kī ~) which "eek" is appropriate for. I am half curious if it was a reference to きつね (kitsune) but I am probably reading into it.
>>283908891洋食 (Yōshoku) refers to western food and was the term used here. Breaks does into pretty much the same thing too, but 洋 can refer to ocean, any foreign country, the west or wide in Japanese, it seems.
>>283908944Hehehe. Unstated "cat's tongue" joke here.
>>283908968Oh, Furinkan had a note: "Western food was slowly being introduced to Japan little by little, but as Mao can attest it was something of a novelty."Also, Otoya is just at a different table with a glass of water? I feel I've seen him drink water before, but I assume he also doesn't need it. Nanoka's line concerning Otoya seems a little different though I assume the connotation is the same. In the second bubble, it was "こういうお店とか入り辛かったのかな。" (Kōiu o-ten toka hairi tsurakatta no ka na.) or "Was it hard to enter a store like this?" I assume it means something like, "Is it uncomfortable for him to enter a restaurant?" Though, that's just me guessing. I can kind of see why VIZ rewrote that.
>>283909045A bit rewritten here. Mao's response in the second panel seems a little bit less formal and maybe a bit less considerate. It was たまにはね。(Tamani wa ne.) or "Once in a while." or "Occasionally." As in "It is fine every so often". As such, Nanoka's response didn't refer to it as payment or anything. Nanoka's final line seems a little different to me too, though maybe VIZ's translation is the unstated aspect. 私のご機嫌とってるー!? (Watashi no gokigen totteru ̄ !?) or "You're trying to please me!?" or "You're trying to make me happy!?" Not referring to compensating from before directly.
>>283909189Perfume sachet is probably a reasonable translation for it, but the term was 匂い袋 (Nioifukuro) and is commonly translated as "scent bag" it seems. Oh, it seems the term sachet can refer specifically to this type of item (a bag that solely exists to smell good) rather than a packet.
>>283909290Haimaru cute.
>>283909045I'm fairly sure the Otoya here is actually depicting him whenever they go to the milk hall. I guess what's meant is that Mao doesn't usually go to restaurants since Otoya doesn't eat.
>>283909313
>>283909344I once had someone get mad at me for not turning back enough, which is exactly the complaint here. Admittedly, this was from an adult so it seemed a bit of a silly complaint then. Maybe I'm not very romantic either. >>283909316That makes a lot more sense. Yeah, VIZ really messed this up. I mean, I might've too, but I admittedly had my perception of the situation influenced by VIZ. Not the end of the world though.
>>283907492I think season 1 should adapt up to this chapter all of the major players are introduced and nanoka even delivers a classic line here >>283908035>Although there are so many mysteries still ahead of us...and we even get some bickering >>283908496
>>283909401
>>283909465End of chapter. You can kind of see why Otoya almost feels snarky at times with his little thought bubbles.
>>283909421I think they ought to adapt the next chapter as well, if for no other reason than that it wouldn't be a very exciting opener for the next season.
>>283907723>>283907736and just like that, it was over...>>283907764heart broken metaphorically, heart ripped out literally>>283907777it would be difficult to survive without a heart mao
Furinkan talks about this a bit. They say: "A literal translation of the chapter's title would be "street demon". The term street demon has literal and figurative meanings in this case." They link to more details where they say: "The term "Street Demon" (通り魔) initially had supernatural origins tied to mythology, but in modern vernacular it has come refers to a type of crime in Japan. It is defined as "someone that turns around and suddenly harms a passerby."" Googling the term, I got slasher and phantom killer as potential ways to translate it. Also, gunner. Which I guess is usually how these crimes are committed in the United States. VIZ's choice seems reasonable enough.November 25th, 2020. Author's note:"Q: Is there anything you can't throw away?A: Character goods."
>>283909741First panel used the term used in the chapter title. >>283909672>>2839094218 volumes feels like a lot in a season, but there are some action scenes so maybe it would work? I'm pretty bad at estimating this sort of thing. The new Ranma 1/2 only got to Volume 7 in its second season and it skipped some stuff.
>>283909812I have never committed the definition of "convalescing" to memory. Maybe it'll stick this time. It means recovering from sickness.
>>283907835>>283907878hakubi's white eyebrows were just too convincing>>283908035>would've been the wrong tone completelygotta save the literal translation for when it's said by one of the disciples lol>These tiny bathtubs seem absurdly inconvenient.i can't imagine that they become any more convenient with age either...>>283908251>追いかけるit's actually 追っかける okkakeru from what i'm seeing in these scans, which is apparently a colloquial way to say 追いかける>>283908496teehee
>>283909672chapter 70 isn't going to take up the whole episode anon there's murder in the chapter right after
>>283909955First panel originally used 兄上 (aniue) which is a very formal and archaic way of referring to older brothers. Grandmother was おばあさま (oba-sama). Soma had no honorifics. The name is 双馬 (Sōma) and I think it means "two horses"? Yeah, messed up the post.
>>283910008It's still an awkward place to open with, even if its just part of the episode. It's much better to start a new season from a clean slate with the mysterious new murder case than with them going on an sort-of date to clear the air first. And Nanoka's realization in >>283909465 would fit much better as the capper to season one than having it end with them bickering.
>>283910117Still no name being used here. I don't know how pragmatic or impersonal the first line was in Japanese. It was あれは・・・もうダメなようだ。 (Are wa mō damena yōda.) with emphasis dots on the are. I saw it translated as "That... seems like it is no good" but I saw another thing that was "That... seems beyond saving."
>>283910250Highly impressive moustache
>>283910250Still no name being used.
>>283907424Ywnbaw faggotTake off the dress
>>283908572>November 18th, 2020so close...well happy late 5th anniversary to chapter 70
>>283908768>Uozumi referred to the Taisho era here in the first panel and the lastwell the kanji for Taisho was there but she said "other side" (むこう mukou) >>283908815cherry blossom petals?>>283908891>Cute fox thing. now to kill it>>283908944>>283908968>tfw what's new and exotic to him is everyday for you but you know it's the thought that counts also she didn't say taisho out loud, the kanji's there but with furigana こっち
>>283910337I have no idea why the first panel was rewritten in this way. Original was "あの子の体は・・・この加神家因果を受けきれなかったようだ・・" (Ano ko no karada wa kono Kagami ka inga o uke kirenakatta yōda) which seems to translate to "It seems that the child's body... could not withstand the karma of the Kagami family...". So, yeah, this is the Kagami family. No idea why VIZ didn't go with that.
>>283909290>it seems the term sachet can refer specifically to this type of item (a bag that solely exists to smell good) rather than a packet.fascinating >https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachet>>283909344>>283909401it takes two, nanoka-kunmaybe don't zone out when there's a crowd around you>I might've tooI mean there are wasn't really anything to distinguish that panel as being a memory...>>283909465>kind of >>283909552>You wouldn't know it from his facethat's what the shojo bubbles are for lol
>>283910731Soma was said here. Ichima still hasn't been. >>283910706Thank you for the corrections.
>>283910943Here we finally get the name spoken. The other boy refers to him as 一馬兄さま。(Ichi ma ni sama) with the Furigana いちまにい for the first part.
>>283911083
>>283911132I don't know if it is an expression or what, but Mao seemed to specify to remember the smell and atmosphere of this place. Oh and "protective" was 優しい。(Yasashī.). Kind of a broad term.
>>283911176So, they moved the reference to the Kagami family or clan to here. It might actually be a biological family in this case. Not sure. Anyway, since we know his full name, here's Furinkan's note regarding it: "加神双馬 The family name "Kagami" is written with the kanji for "add" and "god". The first name is more interesting however, it means "pair horse". Each of the Kagami brothers has a name ending with the kanji for "horse" and beginning with a number signifier for their birth order. "Pair" is meant to indicate Soma being the second born son."
>>283911242Love this page.
>>283909812we now come back to murder>8 volumes feels like a lot in a season, I was only talking about ch.69months ago I finished jjk season 1 and while on wikipedia I noticed that chapter titles/volume summaries up to the first sentence of vol.8 matched what I watchedfor a moment I did think "but it has more fights" but then I remembered rumiko's been using bigger panels with some even being the whole page so maybe it'd work for 25 eps?also I'm aware that frieren had a 28 ep season 1hopefully we get more info next week with ch.300...
>>283911252獣 (kemono) or "beast" was used here rather than monster, which I think probably should've been left as beast even if it sounds a little silly to us in English. As for the final line, VIZ might've missed the mark here. The original line was "この兄を…斬るか…" (Kono ani o… kiru ka…) which seems to me to show a limited capacity for thought and say "This brother... should I kill..." directly but maybe could be something like "Kill... my brother...?" or maybe even "Should... brother... kill brother?"
>>283911354Then again, maybe not. He seems a bit talkative here. The term used was "host of a brother" rather than shell and refers to "this beast" which is a little more ambiguous in regards to who is speaking, but eh.
>>283911393!

>>283911416End of chapter.

>>283911760
>>283911354I wonder if Rumiko deliberately chose to use a cute little fox guy here >>283908891 before starting an arc about an actually threatening beast.
>>283911893I'm a bit confused by the first bubble. The line is 仏さんのあの制服・・・ with the furigana ほとけ for the first character and せいふく for the last two characters. Google is translating it as "Buddha's uniform" but I don't know why that would be. I assume it is a term for a specific uniform, but I have no clue. Oh and Otoya's line in the final panel says he must've passed out after the fight. Presumably, he died there rather than something else having happened to him. But VIZ's seems a little more ambiguous.I like the way the eye is drawn.
>>283912044
>>283912075Nice to just see onmyoji flat out. I wonder if this'll continue.

>>283912202True.>>283912153Ah, cool! Thanks.
>>283912223Nanoka's line pretty much meant the same thing in context, but the line itself was somewhat different. "この人・・・お兄さんが死んだっていうのに・・・" (Kono hito onīsan ga shin datte iu no ni) or "This person... even though his brother is dead..."
>>283911132"serial killer" here was that 通り魔 word, i guess nanoka would be using it in the modern sense >>283911176>to remember the smell and atmosphere of this placei found 雰囲気 to be used in phrases such as "to spoiler the mood" (雰囲気を壊す) and "it's cozy" (雰囲気がいい) and even "woman who is not traditionally beautiful yet somehow very attractive" (雰囲気美人) wiktionary has a fun etymological note about it too>https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E9%9B%B0%E5%9B%B2%E6%B0%97#Japaneseand nioi 臭い has another meaning of "aura, whiff" it all sounds very abstract so i'm not sure how nanoka is supposed to do that...>>283911242>Each of the Kagami brothers has a name ending with the kanji for "horse" and beginning with a number signifier for their birth order.ichima was written with the kanji for "one" :-)
>>283912223Mao uses "-kun" for Soma. He uses the term 邪気の塊 (Jaki no katamari) or "mass of evil aura" or "lump of evil energy". Maybe the furigana is different so that's why they went with constellation? I don't think that's right. I couldn't get the furigana to lens since it was small, but it just seems like the wrong word regardless.
>>283912341
>>283912363Furinkan has a note for me. "Mao refers to his "detection amulets" in the English version. In Japanese these might be translated more literally as "tracking amulets" (追跡の呪符/tsuseki no jufu)." Protective spell was 結界 (kekkai) or barrier or boundary as usual. The term "dangerous entity" appears to have just been "something".
>>283912392Nanoka uses Soma-kun.
>>283912407Always a fun bit of screentone.
>>283912418End of chapter. The bubbles were a bit rewritten. All three were questions originally and he asked "Kagami family...?" in the second one. Which admittedly... doesn't quite work in English. Also, VIZ somehow royally messed up his face in the final panel. I have NO idea how that happened as the sound effect was not over it in either the English or Japanese edition, so it is just cut off for some reason.

Original title was 加神家の家宝 (Kagami ka no kahō). Only reason I mention it is 家宝 seems to technically mean "family treasure" or "heirloom". Per Furinkan: "This issue is a holiday double issue to give the staff and artists at Shonen Sunday a week off." December 9th, 2020. Author's note:"Q: What are questions you've secretly wanted to ask other artists but haven't? In the original Japanese the name is written in migi yokogaki, though there is no easy way to reproduce this in the English translation." Also, they mention that: "Hyakka is seen drinking Ramune, the first soda (it was lemonade flavored) introduced to Japan in 1884. The codd-neck bottle is one of the distinctive features of Ramune."

>>283913684A little bit of localization but nothing too crazy. No equivalent to bleeding heart was used.>>283913661For 900 years, Hakubi had no idea of this too. Just one of those things.
>>283913722Yup, "-sama".
>>283913733
>>283913742Any means necessary seems to be a bit of a VIZ addition to make it a bit less subtle. Not that it was particularly subtle originally. The term was 強い心 (Tsuyoi kokoro) or "strong heart" or "strong will" or "strong mind", etc.
>>283913772
>>283913783
>>283913794
>>283913808End of chapter.
January 6th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Was your first dream of the new year anything shocking?A: A dream where I completed one serialization but did not start another." Not excited for that day, but she does need rest.
>>283913844
>>283913883Heh, Nanoka's line was 雀の偵察隊!? (Suzume no teisatsu-tai!?). Sparrow Scouts is correct, but google suggested Sparrow Recon Team, which is also funny.
>>283913922
>>283913934
>>283913722What a nice and not at all evil-looking girl
>>283913960Kagari name is used here with no honorifics. It is also written in hiragana. かがり (Kagari). Googling the hiragana gave me "iron basket for torches" if using 篝 or "to stitch" if using 縢り.
>>283914023Furinkan notes that: "A mention is made regarding "jugon talismen and tools". Jugon (呪禁) simply means "cursed"." But googling it, that doesn't quite seem right? This seems to be that archaic term meaning "vanguishing monsters, spirits, etc. with charms" that comes from Taoism.
>>283914059
>>283914069
>>283914081
>>283914059That would probably explain the spear
>>283914089
>>283914121Hyakka's first line was translated a bit more pragmatically, as he referred to Mao trying to exorcise the beast as being a ありがた迷惑 (Arigatameiwaku) or "misplaced kindness" or "unwelcome favor".
>>283914189Hyakka seemed to specify that he was going to kill Hakubi first.
>>283914201!
>>283914206
>>283914238
>>283914250Hakubi didn't seem to be concerned about Soma not having the wherewithal to murder someone here in Japanese, at least not directly. He just said Soma had to do it while 冷静 (Reisei) or "calm" or "with composure".
>>283914287End of chapter. Nanoka's line here was just "こっ・・こいつら〜っ!" (Ko~tsu koitsu-ra 〜 ~~) so uh, just "these... these guys" but you know, in a very negative way.
Chapter title was 獣を斬る (Kemono o kiru) which seems to be "Slay the beast" or "Kill the beast". And yes, this cover was originally in full color.January 13th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What have you unconsciously taken a picture of lately?A: My Purple Ribbon award."
>>283914344Remarkably long term used in the second panel in Japanese. きみを殺さなければならない。 (Kimi o korosanakereba naranai.) but it still just means "I have to kill you" from what I can tell.
>>283914395
>>283914401Otoya uses that same 邪気の塊 (jaki no katamari) or "mass of evil aura" term that Mao used before. "Constellation of evil energy", per VIZ. And spell was 術 (jutsu).
>>283914433Heh. She still hasn't fallen.
>>283914443
>>283914460!
>>283914469
>>283914483Uh, yeah, this was the chapter title. I don't know why VIZ went with "slay the best" here, but "strike the beast" for the chapter title.
>>283914495Amusingly small Soma.
>>283914511Cool small Nanoka.
>>283914521
>>283914534
>>283914564Kagari referred to Nanoka as Nanoka-san here.
>>283914590Love that first panel. One of my favorite parts of Mao is Nanoka fighting.
>>283914604
>>283914613
>>283914666
>>283914674End of chapter. Hyakka's line is a bit funnier to me in Japanese. It was 白眉てめえおれを殺す話はどうなった (Hakubi temē ore o korosu hanashi wa dō natta) or "What happened to the plan to kill me, Hakubi?"
Original title was 捨て身 (Sutemi) which is a term that does seem to mean "At risk of one's life" or "desperate" or "self-sacrificing". January 20th, 2021. Author's note:"Q: Could you tell us if there are any words you've learned recently?A: I can't remember any."
>>283914727Chattel is an interesting choice, but it does kind of fit seeing as it means "personal property". Anyway, the term was 眷属 (kenzoku) which seems to mean "dependent"/"kin" or "follower", "underling" or "retainer". It was also very big, hence the large bubble. Probably should've made it big, VIZ. Maybe something like "Become mine!" I don't know.
>>283914769
>>283914773I get the Japanese was a little awkward to translate directly, but I don't know if "kick your butt" was correct, VIZ. Anyway, Nanoka's lines on this page were "許さない! 白眉あんたも双馬も!" (Yurusanai! Hakubi anta mo sōma mo!) or "I won't allow this! Hakubi and Soma too!". 許さない seems to also mean "This is unacceptable" or "I won't forgive this".
>>283914830
>>283914495Faito!
>>283914840ひっこんでろ小僧!! (Hikkon dero kozō!!). Pretty directly translated actually.
>>283914854You've been using "tch" this whole time, VIZ. Don't make it "aw, man!"
>>283914864!
>>283914871Baka, yeah.
>>283914881
>>283914898Not above using "tch" now, VIZ. Didn't feel like having Hakubi say "Aw, man."?
>>283914908
>>283914920I'm not going to pretend the parallels are unintentional.
>>283914932No sama this time.
>>283914938Still very long.
>>283914920I love posting this page out of context
>>283914943Yeah, "dammit" is good. Just use dammit for くそっ (Kusooo).
>>283914961Yeah, -sama for Hakubi here. VIZ debatably might be praising Nanoka a bit much as the original line 菜花が計算外だったがね (Nanoka ga keisan-gaidattaga ne) or "Nanoka was outside my calculations" might just refer to not accounting for her at all.
>>283914996End of chapter...
Original title is 夜歩く患者 (Yoruaruku kanja). This technically is "night-walking patient". I am probably splitting hairs here though.January 21st, 2021. Author's note:"Q: What do you think is the "representation of adolescence?"A: After school clubs in high school."And yet, they don't feature in Rumiko Takahashi's works at all. At least among the main cast.
>>283915029
>>283915039
>>283915053I like the way Nanoka is drawn in that first panel.
>>283915070
>>283915078I'll be honest, I spent a bunch of time confused while googling because I could not see the difference between "palpation" and "palpitation". I do wonder why realistically Otoya had to wait outside.
>>283915147Hehehe. Hyakka's dialog here was very big in the Japanese version.
>>283915169
>>283915186
>>283915202祈禱師 (kitoushi) was the term used here. Medicine man, shaman, faith healer, witch doctor, exorcist, etc.
>>283915232
>>283915289
>>283915304Yeah, 結界, kekkai again. Barrier this time rather than "protective spell" since that doesn't make much sense in this context.
>>283915328...
>>283915341I wonder if grave soil in Japan has less or more of a person in them compared to western grave dirt given that they cremate and then bury the ash.
>>283915363
>>283915373Heh, Mao referred to the Taisho era here. Not really that notable since referring to your current era seems common in Japan.
>>283915412End of chapter, end of volume. Had to speed up a bit after a bit, but it isn't too late. Thanks anyone who read along, but also thanks anyone who reads it after. I completely understand. Also, I think the localization is improving! I obviously can nitpick forever, but it seems they accepted that this is a series that refers to a lot of foreign stuff and trying to remove that is a bad idea. Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything MAO related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.I will be returning next Thursday to dump Volume 9 of MAO. Thank you for reading. Hope you enjoyed!
>>283915445Thanks for the storytime. Nanoka got to do a lot of fighting in this volume. Compared to Kagome, I feel like she develops into a much more active combatant, especially as the series goes on.And here's the updated timeline. Not too many changes compared to last week, on account of all the fighting. I still need to think of some ways to compress the textboxes further.
>>283911452>Furinkan doesn't mention that this cover was full color, but it must've been.indeed it was
>>283912515>I want to ask Aiko Koyama-sensei (Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san) "Is yakisoba and miso a staple of your diet?i believe that manga barely ended recently i wonder if rumiko ever got an answer from koyama?

Maybe VIZ should've gone with night-walking. As for the grave soil thing, I checked and yeah, they're in an urn inside the stone. So Japanese grave soil should probably be cleaner since coffins are wood.
>>283918560I thought the same at first read but it's not her changing him with the power of love but just yanking the needle out

>>283914201*Hatsuka
>>283911760I like Nanoka's black sweater
>>283909421With the sluggish pace and padded "story" they're going to stretch the fuck out of S1 because the 5 first volumes could be done in less than 6 episodes. Hell, the Hyakka's introduction volume could be a single episode alone.
>>283909812>The new Ranma 1/2 only got to Volume 7 in its second season and it skipped some stuff.Remember when remakefags were hailing for being accurate to source material while shitting on the original? That aged poorly for them>>283910943I saw this fucker in MiB 2 ffs...

>>283927425the use of the round stained glass color illustration in the corner is nice
>>283920951I know hakubi eventually joins that club, but I don't think we've gotten kamon yet
>>283929737He's too fashionable to be caught without a shirt and vest, at the very least
>>283930475when and if the final battle for masago's body happens, shiranui's last attack will rip off kamon's shirt screenshot this which reminds me that we've also seen shiranui shirtless and that the hat stayed on lol which also reminds me that hakubi had his hat on too that time he was shirtless why do the villains keep their hat on
>>283931220Clearly hats figure pretty heavily in the onmyoji pecking orderI bet they had like, one magical hat among their artifacts, and Shiranui's just waiting for the day when they finally find it.
>We are back to slow ass unevetful stuff stretching any possible resolution>Also no KamonI begin to see a pattern but the action this volume was nice.
>>283914943I believe this is a rare case of Rumiko drawing nipples on a male character
>>283911533>>283911760I feel like the combination of modern medicine with onmyodo is something the series could lean into a little more. As it is it mostly exists in the background.
>>283932880Yeah. We are kind of back in setup mode. Stuff is happening, it isn't just episodic but it is kind of slow. I do appreciate seeing Hyakka again.
I'm on chapter 239it's engaging but not as good as Inuyasha wasthere's a serious lack of main villain(s)
>>283935375Not having a clear main villain is one of the things I like about the series. I think it makes for some interesting dynamics.
