People never praise Dragon Ball for its writing, but I can't think of a single time Goku won thanks to asspulls or sheer luck like other shonen protagonists.

>>283907572I think DB's writing has much more important stuff that can be praised. In DB Toriyama crafts a world that feels like an ocean of adventures to be had. He picks up the subject of good and evil and talks about it competently which is very rare. He creates a character that is a world changing genius but at the same time has so much faith in humanity of even non humans that he comes across as extremely naive and sometimes even an idiot. Vegeta's journey of overcoming his coping mechanism from a life of slavery and humiliation is great as well. And even just the absolute cuteness of kids in the story is a writing success as well. Excluding Gohan, he was a bitch as a kid, but kid Goku was dangerously cute and in the last arc Toriyama pulls out the dynamic duo of Trunks and Goten and their shenanigans are just a pure joy to watch. As for the powers in DB they are perfectly simple and underexplained allowing for choreography to shine yet allow for tactics, strategy and shifts in advantage during a fight. He didn't fall for any battle manga trappings as well which none of his successors can't seem to do. And he stayed true to the premise of the series as well which is kind of a rare success.

The Boo arc compensates for it to an extent but the damage was done when he settled on Earth and made his life revolve around Goku.

I praise Dragon Ball's writing all the time. Toriyama was a genius for only showing the good parts. Cool shit is always happening, and when it's over there's a timeskip to the next time cool shit happens.
