Character death in a narrative sense is an interesting thing to me, cause I assume that authors/creators kill off a character when they deem that the character basically doesn’t have a real role in the story anymore, or that their role is less significant than how things are affected by them getting killed off in some way But what makes Asuma’s death funny to me is that it really rubs it in that he’s nowhere near the level of prestige as his dad, e.g. Hiruzen dies and it upheavals the story by having Naruto and Jiraiya having to go search for Tsunade to become the new Hokage, introducing a very important character to the rest of the story, meanwhile Asuma dies and all it really amounts to is that Shikamaru and his cronies embark on what’s basically a suicidal revenge quest that isn’t that impactful
