The little flashback helped make the MC more likeable, which is a problem since that really should have happened at the start of the series. It feels like the author fumbled the beginning and then figured things out around chapter 10 or so. That's probably too late to save the series, but it should prepare him better for his next attempt. Maybe that's why Saito is being so lenient with this?

I see this as how back then and all the way till now, this poor kid believed that dying could actually be seen as something that's "strong". But now with all that's he's seen, and the people he's met, and the conversation he's having right now, he finally puts it together that he's more than just a soldier. Even the way Otr sees this legendary spirit like Fylgja, is different from back then. He's more confident and unafraid, and truly sees the bigger picture that there's more than what he believed. Which is why you see Otr's different expressions with the page you used! From looking at her confidently now compared to looking at her afraid
