It works in the manga because it's a different medium entirely and your mind works to fill in the gaps between the panels, in the anime it just looks schizophrenic. The director is responsible for all the storyboards being like this, by the way, and I remember hearing before the season began that they were being done this way because the director is "known for being able to finish storyboards fast". I've actually went back to rewatch season 1 and 2 and so far eveything really has just been better. Even the use of extened still frames had been better story-boarded out, like Genos giving his backstory actually contributes to the comedic effect of how annoyingly long he prattles on before Saintama loses his temper.It really is quite vexxing how the quality has dropped.
