Am I retarded? I could not tell heads or tails of what was going on in this movie.
Not only the plot, but the world and characters. I didn't understand their motivation, what they wanted, their relationships with each other.
I swear I paid attention, but it's like you have to read the book. I didn't have this problem with other Miyazaki movies.
>>
>>284069710
You are not retarded. This movie is not well written. The music (while repetitive) and animation are very good, but the rest is shit.

For example, the time travel plot point: Why the door can do that? If Howl knew about Sophie since he was a kid why he didnt try to find here before? Why are both in love if they dont know about eachother? Why the your-physical-appearance-is-not-important is not well developed when is important to their relationship? If the door is a time-travel device then what was Howl fighting all the movie?

Bad written movies with high budget are often acclaimed because retardeds think that if they wasted money on it then it must be good. And Miyazaki is the king of that, there are people claiming Boy and Heron is a deep masterpiece. In reality Chihiro was his last good movie, and that one is also vastly overrated (everything ghibli is a masterpiece!!)
>>
>>284070031
I like the absurd coincidence out of nowhere that the scarecrow was the way to end the war.
>>
>>284070031
Ponyo was great, The Wind Rises and Kaguya-sama are masterpieces. Not everything Ghibli made is perfect, but each one deserves individual analysis to see where it succeeds and where it falls short.
Of course, a bad Ghibli is still a masterpiece compared to the rest of anime.
>>
>>284069710
Most ghibli movies have "shit happens, and then the loli flies" kind of writing. I don't remember this movie (other than that one kino track), but it's kind of impressive that it manages to be more incomprehensible than other Miyazaki movies.
>>
>>284070504
I LOVE Ponyo but it is a mediocre kids movie with 0 logic. Kaze Tachinu is okish. Kaguya is not a Miyazaki movie, but yeah it is good.

Its true that Ghibli has a lot of good movies, but it also has mediocre-bad ones.
>>
>>284070206
The power of love or something. I get Miyazaki wants them to be confusing and ambiguous but that was a joke
>>
>>284070206
The war was a complete contrivance that didn't exist in the source material, so naturally the resolution was just as contrived.
>>
>>284069710
Miyazaki just used it as a thin excuse to draw lots of aeroplanes. Reportedly Diana Wynne Jones was not impressed by the liberties taken in adaptation.
>>
>>284070504
The Wind Rises wasn't that good. It's just Miyazaki forcibly grafting his airplane obsession onto The Wind Has Risen. There's almost no purpose in using Jiro Horikoshi's name and pretending there's any biographical element to it since it has almost nothing to do with his actual life story. Doesn't even cover the development of the Zero or the war, which just feels remiss.
>>
>>284069710
lmao same.
This is also the only Ghibli movie where that happened (no, i didn't watch the last one)
>>
>>284069710
Miyazaki began to think films are boring otherwise around this period
>>
>>284069710
It's because anime writers only watch other anime, they don't interact with the real world at all
>>
>>284070031
Boy and the Heron was just Spirited Away but worse in basically every regard
>>
>>284069710
>it's like you have to read the book
Reading the book would not have helped you. After the first third is a completely different story.
>>
>>284074627

I really liked their last one
>>
Hosoda was supposed to direct the movie, but he quit and Miyazaki was forced to pick up the pieces and take over direction. The result is a big mess.

But hey, at least it's not Earthsea.

>Am I retarded?
You're OP so that goes without saying, you're also gay for the records.
>Not only the plot
Hat maker girl has the misfortune of making some spicy comments to a really butthurt magician, she gets turned into a hag and tries to find a way to get her youth back, she finds her way into the house of a handsome magician NEET and hijinks ensue, also there's a stupid war happening in the background for some reason.
>but the world
There's a war between two nations who emply both technology and magic against each other
>and characters.
Sophie just wants to turn young again.
Howl is a NEET wizard with a vigilante streak who made a pact with a devil to retain his youth and gain even more batshit magical power, but using magic corrupts him.
Calcipher just wants to exist, and is friends with Howl.
The fat fuck witch is basically female Howl but at the terminal stage of magic cancer and without a Sophie to save her from her inevitable total collapse.
Through mutual coexistence Howl comes to slowly understand what he's doing wrong and eventually falls in love with Sophie, which also breaks the spell of the fat fuck witch, scarecrow turns out to be the prince of one of the two nations at war who got cursed into that form in order for the war to happen, he goes back to his own place and supposedly that helps stop the war and everyone lives happily ever after.
Fin.

How dumb, lame and gay are you that you couldn't get a simple movie aimed at literal preteens?
>>
>>284077359
>But hey, at least it's not Earthsea.
It's really not much better. They're both totally butchering the source material. There's just more whimsy in Howl's and people aren't so familiar with the source material, so the wider audience is more forgiving.
>>
>>284069710
>like you have to read the book
The book is one of my favorites and I read it once a year. As >>284072624 said the war stuff was added and not part of the original story. Also as >>284074642 the anime bounces from sorce to Miyazaki OC alot throwing things off. I will say Howl the book is one of the few Isekai I enjoy.
>>
>>284077732
The source material doesn't matter, only if the movie works on its own. And Earthsea works much, much less than Howl. It's comparing a 6/10 to a 3/10.
>>
>>284077879
Well offending the original audience of the source material certainly doesn't help at least. But yes, Howl's is a more watchable movie. Though, again, I think that's because it's more whimsical, which gives it more if a pass. Earthsea is what happens when you take all the whimsy out of Howl's.
>>
>>284069710
It's a film about the Iraq war.
>>
>>284073069
You didn't get it, because Miyazaki is extremely subtle. Why did he decide to cast his former protege Hideaki Anno, an accomplished filmmaker in his own right, as Jiro?
>>
>>284069710
Suleiman = Dick Cheney
Howl = JSDF
Sophie = Japanese constitution

Hope this helps.
>>
>>284070031
Future Boy Conan/Laputa/Nadia, Nausicaa (manga), and Mononoke are Miyazaki’s best works.
>>
>>284069710
>I didn't understand their motivation, what they wanted, their relationships with each other.
Most of the dialogue is the characters talking about what they want and/or what the others mean to them
>>
>>284070632
What do you consider all this honorary Ghibli stuff in all but name? Hits or misses?

>Future Boy Conan
>Castle Of Cagillestro
>Anne of Green Gables
>Nadia
>>
>>284081559
Not him, but I just finished watching Conan the other day and it was great. The overall themes were very effective, and it was packed with character the whole way through. You could definitely see the beginnings of a lot of Ghibli staples in there. A very uplifting show, all in all. I wonder how different the novel it's based on is?
I liked it much better than Nadia, which got too bogged down in the whole alien spaceship stuff towards the end in addition to lagging in the middle. Which isn't to say that I didn't like Nadia, it was just not as strong as a whole. I would have preferred if it had retained the more Jules Verne-esque tone throughout.
Cagliostro is great, too. I need to rewatch it one of these days, it's been a while since I last saw it.
>>
>>284069710
Miyazaki is overrated shit for 10yr olds, except if your 10 just watch classic Disney or Looney Toons, much better.
>>
>>284082577
>Miyazaki is overrated shit for 10yr olds
Nausicaa is a seinen manga anon…
>>
>>284069710
It's just a typical Ghibli slop. In this case, Hauru movie was pretty badly written. Repetitive and dull music didn't help in having fun while watching it either.
>>
>>284069710
Its a mess of a movie so no in this specific case you are not a retard
>>
>>284079268
>war......
>IS LE BAD
>loud violin string
>>
>>284069710
I'm glad I read the book as a kid before the movie came out because it does sort of expect you to be familiar with the story.
>>
>>284083553
Yep, wars for Israel are bad
>>
>>284077470
Even though I’m a kuzudebu hakujin tard, I like to think of myself as an independent thinker. These days I stan more obscure media, trying to escape the mainstream—but let’s be real, my ‘opinions’ are still just outsourced to influencers and trending takes. I save neural activity by letting everyone else do the thinking for me.
>>
>>284069710
if you did not understand this movie it means you are extremely rational in a bad way. You judge yourself able of perceiving others, and blames them when you inevitably fail. You expect the whole world to fit your little box of expectations. The rationality of one who hasn't yet dealt with complexity. A long way to go
>>
>>284069710
Do you have to understand it? Sometimes I like to be confused after a movie.
>>
>>284072624
The whole premise of the war being a missing prince is an easy to miss throwaway line at the beginning of the movie too, the first time I watched it I either missed it or forgot and the scarecrow reveal at the end was so random.
But yeah the war sublot was really stupid and forced and I think the weakest part of the film. I wish instead of wasting time with that it had stayed focused on Sophie and Howl's issues. Because there's so much going on the final 3rd of the film is a rushed mess that brings the whole thing down.

>Reposting engagement bait from has-been Toshio Okada
That guy is scum that washed up on Youtube after being dumped out of the university where he lectured on bullshit subjects
And way before that, he had been dumped out of Gainax
>>
>>284083497
>Ghibli slop
And yet it still manages to be better than your loli incest diddy ahhh animu.
>>
>>284069710
The book was better
I don't know what Miyazaki thought he was doing
Every single change he made to the plot just made it worse, or arbitrarily added elements that didn't matter
>>
>>284077849
If you read her other books you'll realize that it's not even isekai, Howl is actually from yet another fantasy world but his is a lot more similar to Earth
Earth is supposedly out there somewhere but it doesn't really matter
