Let's read the start of a classic sadly not too well known in the west. By Takuya Mitsuda, author of Major! Serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1989 to 1994.

>Serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1989 to 1994.
It was, but it originally started in Shonen Sunday Zokango (the at-the-time name of Shonen Sunday S) in the November 1988 issue. It's why these first 5 chapters are so long.

tl;dr for anyone interested, but not enough to read that wall of text:
Major:
>MC (Goro) is a well written character with legitimate reasons/motives to play baseball
>Reasonable pacing storywise
>The focus is mainly on Goro
>The story is about high stakes showdowns between rivals and personal drama/character conflicts
Major 2nd:
>MC (Daigo) is a "literal midget faggot" with an inferiority complex about not being as good as his dad
>Series stalls for years when Daigo hits middle school
>The focus gets hijacked by the almost entirely female cast (minus Daigo and 2 other guys)
>Daigo and his girlfriend refuse to take on one of the strongest opponents at one point
>The story also focuses on "the struggles of young women in the male dominated field of sports"

it's somehow both. like being woke is one thing but appealing to feminists who would try to report you to the cops the second they saw your manga is a completely different thing. it doesn't help that the anime adaptation is produced by NHK and removes ALL of the fanservice so if you only ever watched the anime you would have no actual clue as to why the work is the way that it is (again an elaborate scheme for the author to draw bishoujo). there are people who will swear this is one of the greatest anime of all time and at the same time have to make like the original source material doesn't exist. actual "Hey Jimmy give me a pizza with nothing" moment

>>284114776
HAHAHA
Bumping for hilarity
>>
>>284116078
i mean yeah it kind of is ngl
>>
>>284114776
I don't know if it's meant to be feminist though. Western 'media' outlets will latch on to anything which they think matches their agenda. Major was always about a weaker team being the underdog and trying to overcome a superior team, and I think having a team full of girls is just the mc being handicapped in some way as usual.

Now mind you, I do think he enjoys drawing JC. I'm guessing it's popular in Japan too such gives him more incentive to continue that arc.

>>284110769
The other points aside, Daigo being a loser isn't that bad. We don't need Goro being copy and pasted, nothing wrong with him being different.
>>
>>284117846
I was tired and left out a few things in that tl;dr. The writeup meanders around and tells you a lot less than what it actually says. And I'm not a fan of anyone who starts off a summary with "Aaaaa. Don't even. I don't even. Well obviously [...]"
>I think having a team full of girls is just the mc being handicapped
The image said that the reason the author stalled Major 2nd in middle school for years is most likely that he would have to stop drawing female players at that point because men and women don't play on the same team in high school anymore. He was under the strong impression that he really liked drawing women to the point where it consumed the entire work. I omitted the fact that he draws them naked a lot because people tend to greatly overexaggerate in that regard and I haven't read it myself to know if it was a couple blink and you miss it minor occurences on a few pages or a regular pattern, but >>284114776 seems to confirm the latter.
>Daigo being a loser isn't that bad
I agree that a sequel character being different isn't inherently bad, but it felt like there was more to it that he left out in all that text. For starters, he barely dove into Goro's characterization as to why he's a well written character so people who are interested in eventually reading Major wouldn't get spoiled. I haven't read either series, so I don't know how bad things get. It must have been really bad if he calls Daigo a (actual quote from the image) literal midget faggot twice.
>>
>>284117846
>I think having a team full of girls is just the mc being handicapped in some way as usual
none of these things are true. there is nothing "underdog" about the team or "mc" about Daigo. again Mitsuda has literally gone on the record in writing that Daigo is no longer the main character and is also pretty vocal about the "girls baseball" theme in the story. he has even done interviews about it like this one titled "Is there a problem with girls playing baseball?" (https://www.asahi.com/sp/articles/ASR7G6GVTR73PTQP008.html). if you can't see the vague feminist undertones of that then you're just obstuse. do i think Mitsuda is a passionate third wave male feminist or something? of course not. in the article he even says he's against girls playing together with boys because they'd get injured, which isn't very "woke" of him. but he is still pretty damn smart and doesn't shy away from associating with these implications of his work, it's most definitely not just westerners or western outlets.
about the "underdog" thing, maybe at first Fuurin (now Fuurin-Oobi) were loser underdogs, but if you currently read it you would know that the team is literally regarded as the best in their district and all the other teams they face are the actual underdogs. literally every last one of the previous games in the manga is about the opponents glazing how strong of a team they are. they are coached by Toshiya who is a former MLB player and have plenty of clout with the media due to that combined with the fact that they're mostly female players, which allows them to even get away with breaking the rules in a way that a traditional all-boys team couldn't, which again is done with very clear feminist undertones. (why won't you let the girls play together with boys?)
>Daigo being a loser isn't that bad. We don't need Goro being copy and pasted, nothing wrong with him being different
he is a faggot and i hope he gets raped to death

well in the writeup i did describe the main heroine as "his girlfriend" but i was being sarcastic and quite honestly generous. having a girlfriend would imply him being attracted to women in the first place. the protagonist in MAJOR was also the classic "airhead" type who doesn't realize the main heroine is in love with him until years later but he wasn't asexual or anything. he had crushes as a little boy, was shown to read/own pornographic magazines, and found women attractive and sexy (like when he arrives in America he notes how the women are "a different species" than Japanese ones). in mejaseca this is not the case. there is quite honestly nothing to assume that Daigo experiences any sort of attraction to women. it's not even that he's obtuse he just comes off as having literally no interest. he is at the center of what even the author calls a "harem series" but he never once expresses interest or makes any sort of sexual comment towards his female teammates, instead just acting as a tool to guide and support them (which some people, you know who, have called "male allyship". and i honestly can't say that's too far off.)
also another person questioned why i kept calling him a "literal midget faggot", that is because he is. he is 156cm tall (for reference his father was a 180cm tall guy with an athletic build). i think it wouldn't be so bad if he was in an all-boys team but since they're girls it literally comes off as emasculating (which is a persistent thing in the series.)

I haven't read either series, but in general, your typical shonen protag changed from "airhead horndog that doesn't realize his female friend is in love with him" to "asexual dork" all over the line.
