Put someone else in there, someone that isn't privy to his thoughts that we follow the perspective of, and suddenly there'd be mystery and intrigue. Piecing together how he got sacrificed to an alien god by his coward teammates, that he started hearing voices and seeing signs forcing him to get stronger. Suddenly it's easier to suspend disbelief and imagine him as a three dimensional character and not just a reading of the author's RP character sheet
