in welcome to the nhk we're supposed to view these characters' issues as things that need to be fixed, but in tatami galaxy it doesnt try to say that... instead, it tries to tell u that even a complete loser like ozu is living life authentically and the main character (and the audience by extension) should strive to be more like him. i feel like the conclusion can be read as watashi resigning to his fate and accepting that he's not going to get the experiences he wants, no matter how hard he tries. he has lost all hope and must 'move forward' into an uncertain and possibly very depressing future. i get that watashi had the revelation that theres value in the mundane but that all feels like cope to me because he didnt accomplish anything close to what he was trying his hardest to achieve. all it feels to me is just a melancholic submission to the brutal reality. i read it not as 'the rose colored youth never existed' but instead as, 'the rose colored youth was something that would be continually denied to him specifically.' jougasaki on the other hand was able to get what watashi desperately longed for, but no matter how many loops watashi took it would never be his. also, i read it not as 'watashi realizing that he always gained something of equal importance' but instead as 'watashi realizing at least he gained something for all of his efforts, even if that something could never compare to what he actually wanted so badly. i also feel like 'watashi gaining the ability to look forward instead of living in his regrets' is not really all that great as it sounds... What is in store for watashi is uncertain and could very well be a lot more unfulfilled desires and suffering...

I also feel like the reason watashi never saw ‘the fruits of his efforts’ until the very end of the series is not out of ignorance but really just because he found it too disappointing to pay attention to, but at the end he made the decision to care about it only because he had to face the reality that it was all that he had
