when do they take this off and start crediting the actual artists, you can't credit copyright to a dead man

copyright expires usually 70+ years after the death of the author, so yeah, you absolutely can.
Also for derivative work (e.g. translations or anime adaptations or sequels) the new artists MAY get a new independent copyright for the new work, or just for their part of the new work that is still tied to the original work, or no copyright at all if the changes are minimal (e.g. an editor that corrects some typos). And how is it in Japan? I don't know.
