It was a really big show within the weeb space/"cute girl" show space to the point that it "broke containment" and for a brief time in the early 2010s it got exposed to normal non-anime watchers and/or got them into anime in general, again much like Frieren. Which I think had a lot to do with how ambitious the show was in terms of its stakes, and of course (again much like Frieren) had top notch animation for the time that still holds up today

>>284130570I think that gets more into the kind of place /a/ and 4chan in general is. At the time Haruhi came out, the anime scene was definitely much smaller. Aside from the breakout hits like One Piece and DBZ, which were ostensibly exceptions, there really wasn't a lot in terms of variety and everybody more or less watched the same shows. Though as you said, Ouran was also popular but it didn't get a huge representation on 4chan- the reason being that 4chan's demographic has pretty much always been predominantly male. I mean, they were the ones that helped write the rules of the internet and one of those rules is literally "girls don't exist on the internet". Considering that, then, its not unusual that "cute girl" anime were over-represented on 4chan at the time and thus became a big part of the culture.While 4chan might be a bigger place now I do still think its dominated mostly by males, and I'd imagine there's quite a few oldheads still around, which is why they consider shows like Haruhi "common knowledge". It's an attempt at enforcing a kind of culture on the users of the site and ridiculing or bullying people off the site that don't conform. It's not like I don't relate- anime isn't the tight-knit community it once was and people want to hang onto some form of that somehow. But it doesn't change the truth, unfortunately...
