how would you improve the "military isekai" genre?

Yeah, pretty easily. Can you gun down an ogre? Much harder, while they are not IMMUNE to bullets their hide and blubber makes it like shooting at a hippopatamus, so the firepower needed to put one down is probably heavier than what you have with you and you need to work around your limits. Ghosts or spirits? Sorry, you're just fucked. There's no amount of bullets that can help you here, you need to RUN. Just making it not a one-sided stomp in favor of the modern military can do a lot to re-introduce tension into the story, and make the eventual military victories feel more earned because the whole conflict isn't on easy mode. You might have guns, but the other side has a guy that can read the minds of everyone in your squad at once, and as a result knows your tactics and battle plans in real time to out maneuver you and avoid your kill zones, etc. Military gear and tactics are powerful, but after a certain point having a guy in your squad that can puzzle out the specific magical bullshit at work in the fight is life or death.
