I just realized Kira basically taking over NHN must have a much bigger emotional impact on Japanese readers/viewers. It'd be like if Kira took over PBS or Canada/British Broadcasting Corporation. When I was young and first watched Death Note, I didn't know the NHK was a thing so I didn't get the reference. And when I learned of the NHK as an adult, I never went back and made empathic connection.Just a small realization I had that makes me appreciate Death Note a little bit more.
the British Broadcasting Corporation has been reduced to a dick joke in the internet era. I think the Japanese would have survived a sunday morning cartoon have their public broadcaster being taken over by a murderous criminal to spread propaganda.
