Going to storytime the manga in conjunction with the new anime season so anons can compare and contrast, or experience the story in multiple different ways simultaneously.Today: chapter 88-91
Weekly Shonen Sunday #31, 1989
Someone asked for nitpicks, so. >>284129469Added a bit of dialog with a joke rather than just having a note on the tanuki statue.>>284129527Cut for time. >>284129612A little less cool.
Wait, I thought Viz used "Ran-chan"?
Weekly Shonen Sunday #32, 1989
>>284129767I think it has used it but not consistently.
>>284129767They usually did, but I think it took them a few chapters to start. They really should've made it consistent for this 2-in-1 release though.
Weekly Shonen Sunday #33, 1989
Weekly Shonen Sunday #34, 1989
>>284129671Just pops off-panel rather than from under the sheets.>>284129765>>284129838>>284129867This scene being set right after the initial conversation means some stuff got changed up. Though they did keep Akane cleaning up the tanuki. This also means everyone is no longer getting ready for the day, so they aren't brushing teeth and getting dressed.
>>284129929>>284129995Minor cut gags. >>284130082Ukyo didn't skip with joy, sadly.>>284130256Made Ukyo smack his butt rather than his back.>>284130416Framed the P-chan scene a little more intimately, so they don't suddenly jump up to standing.>>284130460Cut before the big hug. Wig doesn't come off here for some reason. >>284130527>>284130547Scene cut for sensitivity presumably. Admittedly, rest of scene was also cut since it is a chapter ender so it may actually have been in part for time.
>>284130609>>284130630>>284130652Cut for time.>>284130652>>284129767See, Ran-chan now. They followed the dub only for a bit...
To be continued.
>>284130753I think the slap got cut.>>284130789This scene just didn't look as cool. >>284130863Final panel got extended a teeny bit.
>>284131005>This scene just didn't look as cool. The loss of the "Moron." made it less funny.
>>284129417RanmaNOW AIRING ON TV! GO WATCH, KIDS!>>284129785Shonen by Yu Koyama and Masao Yajima, not scanlated... and I think not even published anywhere outside of this original magazine run. I can't find it anywhere, at least.>>284130174Free Kick by Hidenori Hara, not scanlated>>284130574Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor by Masami Yuki, fully scanlatedNOW IN THEATERS! GO WATCH THIS TOO, KIDS!
>>284130863>Akane's reaction to learning about Ranma's curse: "Ew, stay away from me, I don't want people thinking I'm a lesbian">Ukyo's reaction to learning about Ranma's curse: "This is fun! I love it!"Best girl being best girl again.
>>284132400>Tsubasa arc>Ukyo thinks Ranma knows Tsubasa is male>Ukyo sees Ranma asking Tsubasa on a date>mildly nonplussed but otherwise unbothered
>>284131614>GO WATCH, KIDS!God I wish I could go back in time...
>>284130574>>284131614>first Patlabor movieDamn, good shit.
>>284131614>Shonen by Yu Koyama and Masao Yajima, not scanlated... and I think not even published anywhere outside of this original magazine run. That's really strange.
>>284132400Ukyo is a miracle.
>>284135214Koyama's nip wikipedia page mentions that it got "mysteriously canceled", so God knows what happened. Maybe it offended someone?Koyama switched exclusively to seinen after this as well.
>>284136308If he switched to seinen afterwards, he probably got annoyed at the content restrictions Shonen Sunday imposed
>>284130634>>284129671Yeah, I always got the impression that she snuck under the bed and walked her hand up until it got to his.
>>284130863Ukyo being best girl again.
>>284130863>Ranma stripped down to underwear so Ukyo could have fun with hir body How did that conversation go?
>>284129436>Ranma dressed like Shampoo
>>284138908>Ran-chan, take off your clothes so I can play with your body.
>>284129972He's practicing a handstand with indian sit. Even just having a casual conversation, he's practicing callisthenics.
>>284129765They doubled up on his hotplate gag.
>>284130589So, the cursed ones cant drink anything cold without transforming, or they have to be doused in cold water to trigger it?
>>284139236>>284129436Funny thing is that the thumbnail makes P-chan look like a blob of hair, which furthers the Shampoo resemblance. Assuming there isn't a pic of Shampoo in a similar pose, maybe it started as a Shampoo sketch and she redrew it.
>>284130753They retained the frame of him pressing her down, at least.
>>284140059I think drinking doesn't count. Like if you actually spill the drink on yourself it would, but the liquid just touching the lips/mouth while drinking normally doesn't trigger the transformation.
>>284140167I wonder if the dialogue toned that down (I'll probably ask about that in the episode thread).
>>284140207Maybe it has to be psychologically shocking
>>284139836Ranma claps with his feet when he's excited like this.
>>284140207>>284140059There's a certain amount of it required. As for why rain triggers it, I assume it counts the amount in totality rather than individual droplets.
>>284142703It's probably more like you need enough continuous contact to count as "immersed". So a glass of water to the face counts, but just having somebody grab your face after washing their hands wouldn't(unless their hands are big enough to encase your entire face, but then in that case, it depends whether the water is warmed up by their skin contact).
>>284129453I think I don't like about the remake, they don't have enough mob participation so Hiroshi and Daisuke or Shingo and Kiichi come across more like "the two guys standing in for the whole crowd" rather than "Ranma's best friends giving him shit".
>>284144571That Furinkan Radio Club forced narration is very cringe, ngl.
>>284145730Yeah, I don't understand the point. The guy adds nothing.
>>284146648Can't even blame the censors for this one, that's the thing.
>>284145730An anon posted this in an instakill thread but it deserves airing:>2. Ichiro sucksI was pretty neutral on the idea of adding the radio club (?) announcer before, like yeah I guess it makes sense to just choose one guy to do it every time rather than having to make a new character design and choose a different VA whenever there's some fight or whatever. And having some crazy guy really devoted to his job feels appropriate to the universe. But in practice it just doesn't really work for me. I saw another anon point out that it makes his reactions feel less meaningful compared to the equivalent moments in the manga, like before the other characters were naturally reacting to the events and expressing genuine surprise etc. while here Ichiro's just doing it because he has to, and yeah I agree. It wasn't so bad in the second episode since his role was so minimal, but in the latest aired one I really noticed the downsides. There's kind of an angle of him just making the moment about himself that of course wasn't in the original work, and you can kind of even see this in the reboot where there's a gag where he asks Akane how she's feeling and she gets pissed. Like the old anime in some scenes, it's just turning the focus away from the MCs and to an additional character when it really doesn't need to.
>>284129417>>284131614>Ranma>NOW AIRING ON TV! GO WATCH, KIDS!For the record, this issue was released in early July 1989, just after the original Ryoga arc had concluded in the anime (with episode 10). Very early in the anime, at a point "holy shit Ranma is airing on TV" would still be a big selling point in itself.
>>284146648This scene felt surprisingly satisfying.
>>284147780That cover also shills the Patlabor movie that would premiere in a few weeks (and get bigger cover attention here >>284130574). Pretty exciting times to be a Shonen Sunday fan.
>>284148588Shit like this just reminds me of how good things used to be.
>>284139836He does that a lot, also things like fence walking randomly. The real question is how Genma and Soun keep from turning into flab buckets.
>>284149437I want to go back.
>>284150913Same with /a/ and the internet in the general, from the depths of my heart.
>>284129469Did Ryoga squash Ranma's head on purpose?
>>284129527Just realized the gag isn't actually about the statues (dogu?), it's Ryoga's imagination either instantly 3D printing into reality or being visible to Ranma via psychic link.
>>284152916It is both, yeah. It is a dogu and a haniwa. I don't know the heart one. I googled it, it is also a dogu.
>>284129501>>284129702Is it me or is Akane more sincerely reassuring when Ryoga's the one questioning how Ranma treats her / their relationship? If she was talking to, oh, Kasumi or Shampoo, it would probably be delivered more like "It's FINE! *glare**seethe*"
>>284153445They wouldn't ask that, but maybe. She is being genuine here. Which definitely hurts Ryoga more.
>>284129547Yeah, Ukyo doesn't come across as intimidating a fighter in the remake or even the OG anime. Here she nearly slices Ryoga.
>>284154011Well, the situations aren't exactly the same, but a lot of characters are observers of Rankane antics. Like here >>284129867 with Soun, when Akane introduces Ukyo to him, she says "This is Ranma's *cute* fiancée". Even that subtle level of bitter sarcasm isn't something she uses when she's talking to Ryoga about Ranma.
>>284129593Considering Ryoga's umbrella is supposed to be superhuman strength just to carry, Ukyo's pretty strong to hold it off, right?
>>284129593Ukyo is so hot
>>284129612I wonder if Ryoga was imitating Ukyo's slicing technique
>>284129646I empathize with Ranma here. One page of serious shoujo manga vibes is enough.
>>284129654They cut fun details yet added in bland forgettable original dialogue. Someone pointed out they did it in the Kodachi introduction episode, too. No sense.
>>284148520Damn, cap boy is gonna regret it when he develops the film and realises he caught Cologne's raisin cameltoe front and center.
>>284130060Modern /a/ would cream their diapers and screech about NTR if this came out today
>>284157512...Yeah. I've had the misfortune of exposure to the Hero Academia fanbase (sorry, sorry). And now when I read these threads, from time to time I can't help but think of the zoomers shitting out hundreds of memes about that MC being a battered wife, cuckold and emasculated sissy because he admires his rival's fighting spirit despite his past bullying. And I wonder how they'd react if you reprinted the Ranma and Ryoga saga into WSJ.
>>284157406I wish that were me...
>>284129702This perspective in the first panel is funnier than the remake keeping it as a background event
