>>284136157Back then everyone was in the Attack on Titan is cool mindset and wanted grittier, edgier shonen shows. Akame ga Kill came at that moment and was a show with lots of edge, gore and character deaths, so it was celebrated as a novelty, that was back before CSM and JJK were a thing, so it made it stand out more too. I personally enjoyed it, it's far from flawless, but it's dumb fun and the battles are cool. Shame my favorite manga fight was butchered in the anime tho.

>>284137903To be fair the Akame ga Kill world is a mish mash of several cultures. The setting seems to be european at first, but it has also lots of ancient China elements too (the way the emperor dresses, the ultimate weapon being named after the first Chiense emperor Qin Shi Huang, the presence of vaguely-Asian characters like Akame, Kurome and Sheele, the fact there's an entire school of Eastern martial artists...). I don't think they wanted to make a consistent setting given Akame ga Kill was made to cram all the stuff the authors found cool without much consistency or world building, so I wouldn't think much about it.

It's all just absolute monarchs and greek "democracies," by which I mean modern democracies projected back onto greek and roman-esque societies that operated as differently from that as medieval eastern feudalism did from western.How the system of rule actually works, how the laws and religion worked, whether anyone even had any significant bureaucracy or not, all gets mushed and melded into a slurry of half misunderstood, half completely wrong conceptions of the past filtered through whichever popular work of fiction has most recently tricked people into thinking it's realistic.
