I'm writing a story that follows a journeyman alchemist as he moves into a new town and sets up a potion shop
One of his customers is an elf-mage who is searching for rare and valuable books, tomes, scrolls, etc. To bring back to her sister-elf who runs a large and eclectic library/archive in the capital city.
The elf challenges the alchemist to produce extremely powerful and unique potions that delve into magic territory, which he is not used to as alchemy and magic are separate concepts in this world
At one point, she asks to make a copy of his catalog for her sister, as knowledge of potions is important to archive. He's hesitant at first, because it's his buisness and giving away all of his knowledge may not be the best idea, but she convinces him by promising no one will see the catalog for a couple generations or until he retires. It's somewhat implied that she's actually just using that as an excuse to spend more time with him, as she has to make the copy herself
They keep a professional, yet friendly tone throughout their dialog, and it begins bordering on flirty as time goes on
The elf teaches the alchemist's apprentice/adoptive daughter some basic magic, and she shows some natural talent for the craft
Lastly, she enchants a couple of gemstones for him, which he ends up using for something quite cool
The story ends without major romantic development, but will be left wide open for a sequel in which it is very obvious the elf would return in a more long-term fashion
