For me it's fanon as sometimes a character I like will get awful development and the common fanon interpretation will be much, much better than what was presented so it'll become my own head canon and the way I interpret the character in secondary work. The short answer is: it depends on the character and series. Some series the common interpretation shits all over the character and I hate it. I just feel like as long as someone can make the character feels realistic in ending up the way the character, fanwork or original, wants it, I can accept anything that isn't the exact opposite of the character. I might even accept it if they can make a good point and give it a good long narrative
