I've more or less quit three months ago, but I got out a bonus chapter yesterday. Man I'd forgotten how much work this was.

I used to typeset some pieces of fanart other anons translated.
But they stopped providing translations. Even the fanart itself stopped and the artists switched to gacha.

I read raws for things I really like for fun and practice but I haven't TLed anything since early this year. I've been pretty unmotivated to TL anything since more and more I see people with basic to intermediate JP skill, MTL assistance, native English skill, and a little contextual awareness putting out objectively much higher quality work than diligent human TL with shitty ESL editing. Which is great, it loses enough nuance just going to English that it isn't going to hurt anything if it loses a little more to make the flow natural and not stilted, but it's also made the easy part easy enough that I'm not offering anything of any real value.
I'd be interested in learning the finer points of typesetting/cleaning/redrawing since those are the harder part, but I know that that also takes fucking forever to do, and I'm a grown-ass man with a career. It might be fine for some of those little one pager webcomics, but I'd have casual hobby time for it at best.

I hacked together a pair of photoshop scripts that made banana redraw extremely efficient. One creates a placeholder layer from selection snd copy the selection to clipboard, the other pastes and fits clipboard content to the placeholder layer and creates a mask automatically.

Most groups are looking for a competent TL before anything, so if there's any manga without scans you could single-handedly get the ball rolling on scans by just offering to TL it - typesetters will pop out of nowhere so long as a TL shows genuine interest.

I get why some people feel the need since god knows not everybody reads kana, but I think a lot of the time context should be plenty and doing more than a note in the margins is a waste of time assuming people have zero ability to parse anything that isn't spoonfed to them.

You'd be gimping yourself pretty bad in redrawing with old version of spot healing brush and no remove tool. If your processor was made less than 17 years ago and supports SSE 4.2, go for a more recent version.

You speak as if you've never done a service for others (or for your own satisfaction), trying to maintain a level of quality without expecting anything in return.

I used to OCR ebooks from pdf to epub and even though I came across thousands of books that needed some care, I only worked on authors and periods I was interested in, until I burned out as well.
Sure, I could've picked up a 10 page long short story collection by some young adult author from 2002, that would've been easier, but why bother?

Was the anon I was speaking to about Plustek Opticbook scanners last month still around?

desuarchive.org/a/thread/283626880/#283644014

If so: I did some subsequent research and emailed Plustek, and it seems like there's no significant differences between the A300 and A300 plus, and I believe not between the 4800 and 4900 A4 models either.

I do, actually, have a few books I wish to scan which have page sizes above A4, but the A300 models both cost like 3x the amount of money as A4 ones. I do see a used listing for a A300 for about as much as a 4900, but I have no idea how i'd tell from the listing if it's in good working condition or not. Is there anything I can have the seller scan as a test to then send me the scanned image to look for potential issues?

Conversely, I only have a few books with larger then A4 page sizes, and I don't think most of them have edge to edge illustrations, so I probably could still scan them using one of the A4 models, unless resting the book on the top scanning bed portion is gonna be a problem. AFAIK both the 4800 and 4900 (though I think only the 4800 has it shown on the website) can remove the the top lid to make room for overized books though

>if you buy OpticBook A300 Plus, the max scan dpi is 600, I think is enough for any book but, I don't know how autistic you are with the resolution

From tests I did with National Geographic covers, and a normal ass HP printer-scanner combo, I actually found scanning at higher DPIs was generally inferior to scanning at lower ones, and higher DPI scans had more moire artifacts and visible screentone, but I was also told by anons at the time I tested that, that that's likely just from the scanner having built in postprocessing and scanning at a higher DPI and then downscaling with a better scanner would likely look good.

Anyways, if that anon is still around and is willing to speak over email, I'd love to talk further about this, a throwaway of mine is majoraz0000@gmail.com

Too much shit has been happening.
>AI taking over translations
>Mangadex dies
>Mangadex's replacement dies
>More and more groups are picking dozens of projects only to paywall their releases.

The last one in particular is spiraling out of control. I hope Kakao kills them all.
>>
>>284336005
I'd be happy to see all of those groups die. There might be some losses, but the problem has growth far too much and people need to learn. I don't know how people can believe some of the justifications they use.
>>
>>284336002
Also for any other anons wanting to give me advice (which I'd happily take), keep in mind I am wanting to scan books and magazines with color illustrations, photos etc, not primarily manga.

>>284336005
Why are people using AI for translation rather then for redrawing the backgrounds behind SFX and stuff? It actually seems like it might be well suited to that.

Speaking of, are the anons who were experimenting with using AI to remove moire artifacts/screentone make any headway since I last asked about that a few years ago? Again, less for manga where preserving it would be desirable, and more for color illustrations.

It can do both.
And as >>284319950 pointed out
>more and more I see people with basic to intermediate JP skill, MTL assistance, native English skill, and a little contextual awareness putting out objectively much higher quality work than diligent human TL with shitty ESL editing.
Current models are very capable of spewing out a translation that beats an ESL doing honest work.
They still fuck up with some names, mistaking a character's gender or not knowing who's talking because they don't have enough context, but it's way faster to QC the AI translation than doing the whole thing yourself.
>>
>>284336087
I don't really understand why you think moire is something "not desirable" when scaled down it gets to hardly noticeable levels, but you do you.

You can ask it to scan a blank sheet of paper and any image. I mention the blank image because, by adjusting its brightness, you can check if the scanner is in good condition (you can see dust particles if the sensor is dirty or if the glass has any scratches).

>is willing to speak over email

Assuming you've used them before, yeah, I'd want to have a way to reach you to ask shit. I'm not sure what to make of what you said with proton, though, given what the email says.

You have any input on the DPI thing I mentioned/asked? Turns out the national geographic test images weren't in either thread or in https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/240228854/#240239910 , which was the only other past /a/ thread I could find where I asked shit, but here are the uploads

75 dpi: https://imgur.com/a/nat-geo-test-75dpi-compressed-YUa5xqo
150 dpi: https://imgur.com/a/nat-geo-test-150dpi-hS86mGx

600 dpi: https://imgur.com/a/nat-geo-test-600dpi-compressed-j6Z8CaV
1200 dpi with downscaling: https://imgur.com/a/nat-geo-test-1200dpi-downscaled-to-2400px-tall-cubic-interpolation-TUpx7Zw
4800 dpi: https://we.tl/t-TCnOLvWgha

Here 300 DPI seems to be a sweet spot, 150 just captures less detail, 600 just looks noisy despite the higher resolution. 1200 looks good in terms of detail, there's less noise then 300DPI even when scaled to the same size, but the overall image is brighter/less saturated/has less contrast and at 50% scale or above the screentone is too visible. 4800 (may not be from the same scanner?) has better color/contrast, and doesn't have the screentone as distracting, but the overall image is way too soft.

Is any of this indicative of what different DPI scans will get me with the plusteks or not really?

I am also considering simply buying a DLSR camera and a tripod to take photos of pages, since I need to buy a camera anyways, but last time I experimented with that, the lack of any sort of way to lock angles on the tripod meant it was a huge pan in the ass to get everything aligned

>>284336518
In manga, it's usually fine because the moire adds some character to otherwise plain backgrounds. But see the links above for how it looks in higher detail color illustrations

It's something that's been steadily happening for years but there are a number of events that have gutted the scan community. The first was the advent of Vtubers, it unironically pulled a bunch of JSL anons out of the anime/manga community since dedicated TLs are also the type to become dedicated fans of seiyuu/VTubers, so a bunch of them became casual or "big name" translators within Vtuber communities. Second is COVID/the enshittifciation of social media. Anyone who was younger than 18 when COVID hit has absolute shit work ethic and skills working in a group compared to older people. People are increasingly losing hobbies to hours of doomscrolling and short form content consumption, and it hits younger people harder since they have trouble even conceptualizing a life without the constant dopamine hits of ragebait and For You algorithmslop. I even have millenial friends who have dropped hobbies, side goals like learning languages because of the 5 hours of free time they have after work, 3+ hours of it are spent on social media now.

I've been buying manga volumes digitally off of Amazon and can still use calibre with the dedrm plugin to get pages in reasonable quality (dimensions of about 1388 x 1920).

However one of the newest volumes in the series I've been buying has done something different. There's a smaller .azw file of 42 MB (which is less than half the size they normally are) and if I try to dedrm that I get noisy images with smaller dimensions (884 x 1225). There's a second file with this volume, a 197 MB azw.res file. I suspect that higher quality images are locked behind this, but I don't know how to get around the drm. Anyone have experience with azw.res files?

The usual websites have raws for the last 2 volumes (not sure if watermarked, but probably).
Or you could use the Spanish version which seems to come from the mag release.

The full deal would be great (high res, good redrawing, properly QC'd translation), but as long as the translation is good, most people would probably be happy. More so since reading manga on mobile has turned into a real thing.

You wouldn't completely miss just how much this email sounds like a stereotypical business email right and miss what the joke is about? You also wouldn't have up till now translated how this character in normal speech uses rather colloquial speech like say ending sentences on “〜じゃん” to standard English so the entire punch of the difference would be lost right?
You would've especially not done that while keeping a bunch of honorifics untranslated because you feel it makes such an importance difference while you would've completely fucked this up while part of the role language is that a significantly older wealthy office worker talks casually like a teenager to the protagonist right?

That would've been so embarrassing and virginal had you done that, but you're above that right?

>>
>>284378457
Don't get why you need to have 500 approved uploads to become power uploader either. That's stupid and insane. What troll is going to make 400 illigimate ones just to make the 401st a troll upload and even if it were to sometimes happen, everyone's time would be saved by just reverting it then.

Mangago.me and bato.to literally only require 3 uploads approved by the admins through manual review until they're like “Yeah probably legitimate”. And who knows, maybe some troll is willing to make 3 legitimate ones to troll the fourth time once in a while but then you just remove it after then and it's worth it to not have to manually review so much and just let the 99% that is legitimate upload.

I can see 5, I can even see 10, but 500 is ridiculous.

Mangadex also only requires 1 or a few manually approved uploads to approve you as an uploader.
But just as an uploader.
They trust you not to do troll uploads, but they don't trust you to make edits. Edits and uploads are completely separate.

It's pretty much impossible to get edit permissions on mangadex if you're not a group leader.
Their system is literally "if we get sick of processing so many of your 'update this cover' requests, we will give you the permissions so we don't have to deal with you anymore". But if they're so lazy they just don't care about your requests at all, you're fucked. And no one sane would want to submit themselves to the humiliation ritual of submitting so many reports that way in the first place.

I got mine by chance, some mangadex mod saw me bitching about no one responding to my reports and how retarded their system is on the mandagex discord server, somehow recognized me as a danbooru janny (the product of 1 month of autism, I got sick of gelbooru's inferior UI so I uploaded 500 loli porn pics to get the power uploader upgrade and be able to see loli pics on danbooru) and gave me the VIP role based on that lol.
>>
>>284382847
you can put a youtube video or something in the background to distract yourself, or find a typesetter that will do the work for you
>>
>>284383405
Oh yeah that is how it worked, I also remembered it worked like that for adding new database entries to begin with.

This idea of a shared page for every single scanlation is simply much less pleasant and convenient. I like the system where every scanlation has its own page that is owned by whoever created it more, especially because on bato.to one can petition the admins that receive control if it if the original group has not uploaded in a long time and one can show one has the next chapter.

Also, it works better with different languages which all need a different description obviously.
>>
>>284383500
>I like the system where every scanlation has its own page that is owned by whoever created it more
That sounds strictly worse than the mandagex system. Not only are regular users still unable to edit anything, now even group leaders can no longer edit other manga.
>>
>>284383558
Of course, they shouldn't be able to edit a page that belongs to someone else leading to edit wars.
One can always edit one's own page of one's own scanlation that one created for oneself of course.

Do they though? My impression is that they still need to redraw it.
I say it because there are some official scans that has clear signs of redrawing. Summit of the Gods is a good example of this. But that could be due to their age. For a more recent example there is Kengan Omega. I remember one of the chapters had the attack names overlaid over the Japanese ones.

Seems my mistake was that I tried to use it on the actual layer rather than the mask. I get what you're saying now. It's still noticable but not by much.
There was a part at the bottom I had to manually work on but it seems to be an issue of copy+pasting the edges too close early on. The end result could be better if I put more time into it.

Does anyone have any theory as to why all the translators and fans that prefer untranslated honorifics are colossal permavirgins with bad Japanese who never once had a Japanese conversation in their lives and treat Japanese like a substitution cipher for manga English in their head?
What could possibly explain this strong correlation?

I loved it when this thing I was doing was sniped by someone who used the online matgazine pages while I said I waited for the volume releases because it had explicit sex scenes and the person who sniped me, on top of that, also freely admitted just using machine translation.
Absolutely based; the balls. High-test move, I love it. This is how you snipe.

Sunk-cost and cope. Weebanese has to closest representation of what it's like to consume animanga in Japanese because otherwise they'd be admitting to themselves they've been consuming and will continue to consume shit.

I mean, it can be justified. Obviously it depends on the specifics. Most snipers would never even discover the manga if it wasn't for the original group.

I've only really been sniped once, and then they translated like all of the rest of the chapters of what I were working on.
Luckily they have them behind shitty coin pay walls, they're MTL, and nobody probably reads them, so it didn't really matter.

>13-sai's scanlation is literally done entirely through anons on /a/, right?
yeah, they work on both 13-sai and itoko no ko, and it's the same TL and TS.
I used to clean and redraw for itoko no ko, but I had to quit because of my new job. I just don't have time for scanlation anymore. Or anything else for that matter right now really.

photomerge
And some more stuff that I use exclusively to make memes.

What to do when there's a transitive verb without an object? It's not like with an ellipsis where you can usually guess what's necessary for English grammar or work around it by also cutting the English one short.

Scanlation drama

Some dude just sniped Cinderella Gray and dumped FIFTY chapters all at once on Dex
>>
>>284442249
Examples?
Unlike literature, manga has a visual component so the object could be deduced from that.
If it's not a matter of brevity (i.e., ellipses) but rather intent (keep something hidden), then maybe "it" would suffice? Idk.

Why are some translators (often paid or beg money) so SLOW at their job?
I'm a solo scanlator and I could do 1 monthly chapter a day.
>>
>>284445515
They're a bunch of lazy assholes that would rather circlejerk in their discord all day
It sure as shit doesn't take two weeks to do one chapter
>>
>>284445515
Because scanlation is a hobby, not a job.
>>
I used an upscale model (IllustJanaiV3) and have uploaded 2 chapters with it, but I've concluded it messes with the color, so I'm probably going to go back and revert the chapters to its original, though perfectly reasonable, quality.
No one will won't notice, right?
>>
>>284442871
If (You) are 50 chapters behind on a desirable manga you can't really get upset when someone with initiative poaches your series, especially if you spend most of your time circlejerking in Discord instead of working. A hard pill to swallow for some is that other people don't care about the "hobby" or the unwritten rules, they just want to see the results.
>>
I think it's important to realize that the average manga reader:
- Does not read manga on a microscope
- Does not download your manga and closely inspects it in Photoshop.
- Uses a mobile, tablet or small size display.
- Spends less than 10-20 seconds on any given page.
- Is used to free manga on artifact ridden websites full of malware pop ups.
- Is slow to notice flaws unless they're aware of them.
Remember this and sleep better.
Honestly, high standards are great, but there's a thin line between insanity and good enough.
Nobody is going to give you a price for best quality in pirated manga, and you should seek validation in other fields of aspect of your craft.

I use AI generative fill and content aware fill on like 95 percent of my redrawing, and otherwise I just use clone tool a little or just cover up the parts that don't look good with big strokes. Honestly it's fine, you won't notice it unless you really try to. And it's fast and efficient.
>>
>>284447186
You are correct. I'm not a professional so a mistake or two are fine.
However, I still appreciate those who point out mistakes.
>>
>>284446890
No, yes, they won't will notice
>>
>>284447186
Does your logic extend to the mangaka and editors and original publishers?
>>
>>284452015
Yes. That's why Shueisha raws are so low quality that you have to wait for Bilibili to get the official Chinese translation if you want high quality art.
>>
>>284447186
>tell readers the quality is significantly worse because I'll now be working with webrips that are half the resolution of the tanks and a little blurry
>they universally say they can't tell the difference
I think it's important for the average manga reader to realize this isn't reassuring, it's demoralizing. I put effort in because I think the manga deserves it, not because I think they deserve it. I don't like thinking I'm the only one who cares.

Osis had a vote if people wanted to wait for volume raws, or just continue with subpar magazine raws (which were pretty bad compared to your usual online web rips). About two thirds just wanted him to continue, so he did that. Honestly I was surprised that so many even wanted him to wait for volume rips to be honest.
I myself prefer to work on volume raws if they're available, and otherwise work on the best possible magazine raws (using AI upscaling if it's necessary) since I don't want to wait around for the volume in like half a year or a year or whatever.
>>
>>284406935
Banana (and other ai-bots) not only redraw the page as a whole, even if you say it not to, but its also change size, and even aspect ratio. And in case it won't do what you actually wanted, you need to prompt anew, which isn't free. I wish there was some better AI for redrawing manga, preferable local, but which doesn't need supercomputer to run. Lama Cleaner/IO Paint and available models for Chainner and the likes are pretty shit at redrawing, especially anything with screentones.
>>
>284457343
your banana complaint is mostly just skill issue. I rarely need to go over 2 tries for a given area with banana pro. And masks exist youknow.
For the best local cleaning model try Photoshop 2026 remove tool.

Content aware fill is decent at screentones, so honestly 95 percent or something of redrawing can be done with IOPaint and photoshop content aware fill. Looks more than decent enough.

Hello scananons
Thoughts on weebdex?
Will we eventually see all those mangadex uploads that were taken down resurface there?

>>
>>284462798

I even zoomed in to look for and quality upgrades, but it looks the same as the web comic. I know they have a better quality available cause I saw one of their tweets showcasing a snippet of a page in super high res. Idk why they didn't release that.
>>
>>284464200
Because the volumes of the label are 2:3 instead of 1:1.41 like magazines or normal manga volumes. You see that with other weekly shonen labels as well. In some cases the cut off content, in others they show more or a mix where you get some and lose some.
>>
>>284453290
To be frank, I think the people who do have an issue with it will not voice their opinion. They probably think they'll upset you and drop it.
>>
>>284453290
Its a combination of toxic positivity and the average reader being an absolute fucking retard that will eat up any slop served to them. These people have zero quality standards.
