I've seen so many arguments over the years about Araragi and Oshino's discussion about child abuse in the anime was trying to say, but in the book it's a callback to this. The "her dad hit her because she was too perfect" discussion wasn't meant to be an actual discussion about the subject. The point of it was that Araragi had acknowledged earlier in the book that the situation was extremely nuanced and Hanekawa was partially at fault, to going "I'm not equipped to deal with this shit. I'm just gonna go back to pretending Hanekawa is perfect. Shit was easier back then. Let's just shove Black Hanekawa back in the box and pretend I didn't see her."
