[END Chapter 154] Jiyu Kenkyu (自由研究)Independent Research ProjectThe Independent Research Project (jiyu kenkyu) is the highlight of summer vacation homework (natsuyasumi no shukuda) for Japanese elementary school students. Introduced into the national school curriculum in 1947, it has become a common shared childhood experience for all citizens of Japan. Children are free to pursue anything that interests them. There is no right or wrong way to conduct jiyu kenkyu, and teachers give no guidelines or instructions whatsoever. And that can sometimes makes the assignment difficult for students who are used to being told what to do. When school resumes in September, kids bring in their summer projects and display them in the school lobby and halls.
