Every day until Christmas, I will dump a few oneshots from Garo Magazine.Join me as we explore the wonderful world of alternative manga from the 20th century.>what the hell is Garo?Garo was an influential manga magazine published monthly from 1964 to 2002.It was founded as a platform for avant-garde, experimental, and counterculture manga creators who were rejected by mainstream publishers, and was a starting point for many artists you've probably never heard of.Some of these stories are funny and whimsical, some of them shocking and thought-provoking, and some are incomprehensible pretentious nonsense. Try to keep an open mind, and feel free to discuss manga in general as well.
Day 11Today, we have a Christmas story! Well, sort of.Merry, by Sawada Toshiki.First published in 1979.

>>284415369The negative space screentone hair is something I haven't seen before. Its a really cool effect.
>>284415473Don't really know how to interpret this one. Was the brother always her sister? The sleeping shirt looks like someone a woman would wear, and you kept getting glances of the brother looking feminine.
>>284412828aww, should've left it for Christmas
>>284415092yeah, except takoha definitely waited til his girl was an adult
>>284415456;_;
>>284412925Damn brat!
>>284415473Thx mate.
>>284413472Whoa, this one is good.I can't help but interpret it as a variation on The Little Match Girl where the male MC is the girl.The alcohol imagery, the leading down alleyways and the blackout make me think it's meant to be a Dionysian look into his unconscious and/or society's dark underbelly, so these were my first takes:>Merry was a regular prostitute who latched onto the MCs preachy attitude and lied about her age after he primed her because she assumed it expressed his hidden desires>It Was All A Dream(tm) and our drunk MC just imagined his deepest desires, which nicely ties into Reverie>She was actually 13 and it's some biting satire on the seedy underbelly of 1970s society I'm not quite getting because I wasn't there>Merry is the Christmas the reader secretly longs for. Ho ho ho!https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Match_Girl>In the flame of the next match she sees her late grandmother, the only person that ever treated her with love and kindness.In the flame of the candle, our MC sees a young(?) girl wise(?) beyond her years, possibly the only person that ever treated him with love and kindness. But reality is not so kind as the fairytale version: he can only keep working, waiting for salvation that will never come.
>>284419241I like the analysis. I think its mostly just about the MC being a kinda shitty and pathetic guy at his core and the reader is meant to uncomfortably empathize with that. He's preachy until he's horny and then he fucks a kid and catches feelings for her, when to her it was just another day on the job. His principles are weak and he's weak to pleasure too. But he's pathetic in a way that a lot of men are. He's not 'evil', he's familiar.
>>284419241>She was actually 13 and it's some biting satire on the seedy underbelly of 1970s societyProbably this one, for me this is the one story that doesn't seem to be abstract symbolism.Who knows, might even be autobiographical
bump!
>>284415915It is a pretty interesting effect. Not exactly easy to read, which is probably why it didn't catch on, but it does enhance the mood of the story.
