The strangest thing about Sandro is that he decided to have two other manga running along with Kengan. Does he love writing that much? There's a clear decline in the quality of the fights in Kengan, why he chose to spread himself more thin is a mystery.

They haven't ruined the story as predicted and honestly there are still odd powers in keeping with Honda's "Brilliant Body", or Toda's "Eyes of the White Night". What makes any tournament focused series work just boils down to good fight choreography, and a good story between each fighter. Tenkaichi still has that in spades. Sumo vs Sword Saint still has one of the best rapports between the fighters as both represent the pinnacle of their craft but the post-Gate fights haven't been lacking either. Hanzo vs Kojiro; fantastic fight between the everyman carrying on the legacy of his bro, and a broken human that was blind to their own humanity. Yasuke vs Togo is the weakest but it isn't because of Gates and more because Togo's style is just pretty boring at the end of the day. "Swing harder" can only go on for so long and the fight should have been 2 chapter shorter. I firmly believe that Ishun vs Jinsuke is the 2nd best fight so far. It has similar themes to the Hanzo fight as both were about seasoned fighters going up against young prodigies but tells it in a distinctly different manner. It was also carried by the art because pages like this give me chills. Jinsuke also doesn't have gates and manages to beat his opponent purely because he's capable of evolving across the fight. It's good shit. Whether Gates break the narrative will have to be seen in the 2nd round and we'll see if the writer has to retcon existing fighters as secret gate users or start handing out gates more liberally as a new powerup.
