99 was an anime adaptation. They adopted the source material and added to the original, while 2011 just took manga panels and animated them.99 had infinitely better shading, coloring, lighting, direction, and had more then ten tracks on their OST. The characters were both drawn and animated better (though a few scenes in 2011 are comparable, outside of those scenes in 2011 the animation is absolutely awful). The 99 anime is a lot slower in comparison, but that helps build up the mood and flesh out the world. 99 did have two filler episodes, but the quality of these episodes are so high that someone that hasn't read the manga wouldn't realize they were "filler", and it's also to the point where togashi paired two characters together because of their good chemistry in those episodes. They're not filler like naruto or bleach filler, where it just cuts to a random anime-exclusive plot in the middle of an arc, but instead incorporates itself directly into an ongoing arc, and simultaneously just gives us more insight into the characters on the show that normally didn't receive much characterization, AND it also did this without changing the main plot. Meanwhile 2011 has a fucking recap episode instead. Awful. The random mild censorship is also fucking strange, and the 2011 art style really ruins togashi's art style. The yorknew ovas from 99 are also exceptionally gorgeous, but they are OVAs. Greed island transitioned to digital so they look and are animated a lot worse, and paced pretty slowly, but it still had better sound. I think the art style changes a few times within the greed island ovas too?

Like at 0:10 when Silva is enganging Chrollo, the viewer can see Zeno in the background setting up, and THEN cut to Zeno action and THEN Chrollo reaction and THEN during Chrollo's reaction we see Silva for 1 frame dropping in from above which is establishing Silva's next action-reaction, etc. It's all well sequenced together and easy to follow. 2011 looks like he's trying to imitate 1999 but doesn't take quite the same care and attention to small things, so the pacing and fight sequencing seems a bit worse.

99 was too disrespectful of the original work, the fillers were possible one of the worst fillers ever made in an anime, the pacing of some episodes was terrible, the animation was pretty bad during some episodes or even whole arcs like heaven arena and 99 censorship takes over the whole series after Killua takes that guy heart, it also makes everything necessarily dark when the series was supposed to have a whole contrast of colors and of course the fujo pandering on 99 was out of control, it's no surprise only women and fucking trannies promote this version.

all I wanted to say is that the first part of the 99 anime is better than the manga. all the explanation about gon, jin, his rod, the fish, world building, what hunters are. gon's relationship with mito-san. etc. is far superior and completely different to "I'm a kid I wanna be hunter lol in 5 min".the direction was nice. and has nice touches all over the place. like during the final exam battles they even demonstrated the sun moving to showing how much time has passed.
