Stellar nova take: Sasuke is well written, it's the world he's in that's completely fucking insane.From his perspective he is a completely rational individual making completely rational choices, he just lives in fucking wonderland where the kind and gentle ojii-san who runs the village was actually an utter incompetent who let Ninja Hitler run a genocide scheme under his nose while allowing his village to neglect and abuse its strongest superweapon who was also the dearest son of its greatest hero for no real reason at all.

As we find out at the end Sasuke admits he wasn't able to look forward and could only dwell on the past even though he'd set out to correct things.
