I read the novel for the first time and it's amazing how much the manga added. The story of Gennosuke and Seigen in the book is like 10 pages long and it's one of the less interesting stories; their whole rivalry is just about the women. Basically everything except the two's signature techniques is original to the manga.All the crazy details in this volume alone: the pressure point stuff, the "beautification," the bean-cutting initiation, Kogan being senile but still deadly. All manga-original.
