It means you have to try to be happy. Toy have to exert genuine effort toward the life you want. It's not a guarantee you'll EVER get what you want or even ever be happy but the chance is higher than if you just shut off and do nothing but rot and wait.

Shinji is the archetypal "nice guy" that is a selfish asshole and uses politeness and meekness as a fortress against criticism. Watch Mushoku and look at how Soldat completely reads, berates and improves Rudeus if Eva's narrative isn't brainrotted enough for you to get.
