I gotta say, nothing ever made me end up liking this dude, even trying to give him an arc for being more likeable ended up in failing and he just never had anything redeemable about his personality

He very much would have been better off dying.

You're not supposed to like everyone. From a writing standpoint the point is to understand why character X or Y do the things they do, even if you don't agree with them.
