What even is subbing these days?

>>284483818>>284484211fucked up formatting oops>The phrase "to be cooked" in slang, meaning exhausted, ruined, or high, has early figurative roots but gained specific traction in the mid-19th century UK (1848), notably with "I thought I was cooked once though," indicating serious trouble, evolving into 1970s drug culture slang, and spreading in contemporary pop culture for being overwhelmed or finished.here's another example from 1857>I answered "He is not dead yet." He said, "I thought he was cooked." That was all that was said. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/7147157
>>284484045>shitalizer repeats catchphrase to justify bad translationsyou are so fucking cooked, you will be replaced by AI and it will produce even shittier translations than you ever could and nobody will care because of how bad everything you have been doing up til now was.
>>284483818You chose a known terrible sub group instead of the one everyone recommended for this series.
>>284484045Translations should be able to be read by the largest group possible without including local slang.
Not sure if this is a good thread for this, but how do fansubbers usually time their subtitles? There's a video with a translation that I have some interest in working on, I just don't want to go through a grueling process if possible.
>>284483818>dubtitlesGet actual fansubs
>>284484592I usually just looked for subtitles in other languages that were already timedIf those don't exist then I think you just have to suck it up and time it manually

>>284484681Will probably have to do that, thanks. I tried out an auto-subtitle program to see if it could get me a basic skeleton, but I think it would just confuse me more to the point doing it manually will be better.

>>284484243What do you honestly think you're proving here? That you're just a pathetic and dishonest faggot?Just because some slang term was used 200 years ago, that does not make it standard English. That does not suddenly justify this obscure term being used in a translation. Your historic precedent for "to be cooked" is 100% meaningless, since the phrase is not widely known outside twitter meme communities at the present. It does not matter at all if everyone was saying it back then, that means absolutely nothing. You're an idiot.
>>284484045One day you'll grow up and realize that 99% of slang doesn't last a decade, and what you though was cool is embarrassing and cringy to the younger generation.
>>284484743>>284487949It's funny the way you accuse others of being politically motivated yet you continually bring up these youtubers no one else mentioned. On top of writing newfag style greentexts of course.
>>284484045I'm generally fine with slang being translated as slang but in most cases it's standard Japanese being replaced with modern slang. This isn't the only issue either. I'm pretty sure for instance in One Piece, Imu speaks normally in Japanese but one or both translations give them like a Shakespearean old timey accent for flavor, which is also stupid.
>>284483883Go on.
>>284491633They should only use slang used irl, they're probably too retarded to realize that a lot of their twitter slang isn't widely known
>>284484243I heard it in Halo 1.
>>284484243yes, just like how "sus" was used as a shortening of "suspicious" for a few decades before being associated with Among Us. However, the children these days are not harkening back to the dozens of years of linguistic history of "sus," no, they're referencing fucking Among Us. Children are not aware of the 170 year long history of "cooked" (which I too have used at least once 20 years ago), no, they're repeating the shit they hear on fucking tik tok ad nauseum. Writers would use "I thought I was cooked!" as a way to spruce up their vocabulary and make dialogue slightly more interesting by using a metaphor. On the other hand, children say "bro is cooked" every 4 sentences as a replacement for basic thought processes. These are not the same.
>>284484592some auto-timing software can do it for you, but if there's music in the background it might accidentally extend the subtitle for way too long, or not recognize there's someone talking. Or it'll cut sentences up way too much, or not cut a paragraph up at all. I have experience subtitling a movie and I had to manually time everything. Usually in TL groups, they have one guy doing timings, one guy doing translations, and one guy doing typesetting/editing. I had to do all 3 jobs, sometimes it's just what you gotta do.Make sure you're using a good program first, most people use Aegisub because it's really good and easy to use.
>>284493779Yeah, I looked into it further and decided Aegisub was a good choice for me. This definitely feels different than typesetting a manga, which I've done a few times. I'm not 100% on the quality of the translation that exists either, which keeps making me doubt what to do in some cases.
